I travelled with my friend and we had the best holiday ever! My friend being Colombian and Im understanding a bit of Spanish was defiantly an advantage, but I am sure you would be fine with only English aswell.

My first time outside Europe and it was more than I expected. As the previous person said; people complain to much! The best thing with the hotel must have been the entertainment or Animation Team they call it. They work really hard without hardly any days of and engaged with all the hotel guest and they are really talented dancers and entertainers.

The food was great, always different themes, despite me not being found of seafood there is always something to eat. I do not understand why people would prefer burgers and chips for a nice home cooked variety of foods.

The resort is not in the best locations since you have to take a taxi to really get anywhere. You could possibly walk, but would be slightly dangerous due to the way the people drive. On the other hand, you basically have everything you need in the resort, there is even a nightclub right outside the resort that is open to 5am, then there is a couple of more clubs a 5 mins ride away from the hotel, but this are only busy in the weekends.

There will be alot of locals coming to the hotel during the weekends. I didn't mind at all since they bring more life to the hotel, but could be slightly rude when ordering drinks at the bar.

This was our first trip to the Dom Rep. We went for 5 days in October and were relocated after their sister resort "Be Live Grand Carey" (our initial pick) was closed down in September. Check in was quick and we received a free upgrade to a superior room with garden view in building 9 (one of the white-colored newer buildings). Even though the building was new and the room supposedly an "upgrade" from the standard rooms, we thought the room was just ok. It had a king-size bed, a balcony, a (old, painted-chipped) jacuzzi, the furniture out-dated, some cracks in the wall, and the whole building had this weird musty moldy smell to it. Even the pillows had this weird moldy smell... after we flew back home, we realized, our clothes in the luggage and jackets also got this smell...so we had to wash all clothes - even the unworn ones... we were glad, we didnt had to pay for the room upgrade though. Our room was cleaned every day and we tipped the maid every day for her efforts. Make sure you bring your bug-spray though! We killed about 10 mosquitos in our room EVERY night, but the next night they came back into our room. We have no idea how - since we never opened the balcony. Maybe they came thru the vents?

Also be warned that you have to pay for a safe there... $3 per day...

Food: The food was average, but we were always able to find something to eat,... i love the fresh juices at the breakfast buffet though... they also had a different theme-buffet every night... we also tried the Gourmet and Rodizio restaurant (make sure to get a reservation beforehand!). Both were decent and a nice change to the buffet restaurant... I've also posted some pictures of the food on my other food blog - if you're interested:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Been-There-Ate-That/156499854368045

Tour: we booked the Jeep Safari tour with James from the Playa Dorada shopping center... we emailed him beforehand and called him to confirm once we arrived in Puerto Plata. He definitely offered the cheapest tours...we only paid $35 and was able to visit local villages, lunch was included and we went to the 27 waterfalls... i can definitely recommened that tour...make sure to bring good water shoes for the waterfalls though! Also tip the tour guides.

Shopping: if you want to buy souvenirs for a cheaper price, you just need to walk along the beach in front of the resort. Local sellers will chat you up and take you to a nearby market (turn right at the resort, walk along the beach for about 10min, the market is next to a little bridge). Make sure you haggle! I was able to haggle a seaturtle shell from the original price of $90 down to $30! :) Some vendors also bring their goods into the resort on certain nights of the week.

Warning: you will be hunted down from these Lifestyle selling guys when you go for breakfast or lunch at the buffet... we tried to avoid them, but they still hunted us down...trying to sell us timeshare at a different Lifestyle resort nearby... we politely declined to tour their VIP Lifestyle resort, but still received a bottle of rum and mama juana as a gift. Once we declined them, they didnt bother us anymore...

We also noticed that starting Friday night, the resort was filled with locals... we didnt had any issues with them though...the pool just gets more crowded and we were leaving on Saturday for our flight back anyways, so didnt had the full experience with the locals. :)

In the end, it was a decent relaxing vacation...we loved how the beach was right at the resort... we won't come back, but we didnt pay much for our trip, so we didnt mind too much of its shortcomings...

My husband, myself and 2 other couples went to this resort this past March. We have traveled to many countries and resorts in the past and this was the biggest disappointment we have experienced. The grounds are nice if you can manage to avoid the salespeople harrassing you outside the buffet resturant and on the beach. The food was horrible all around. We ate at all of the al a carte resturants as well and were not one bit impressed. Our first room had a beautiful ocean view but was very dated and had 2 double beds after we requested a king ahead of time. After 1 night we decided to upgrade to the "newer buildings' that did not have a view but were much nicer and more modern. We had to pay $400 for this upgrade which would have been fine except the rooms in the new buildings were full of black mold due to poor circulation. By the time all 6 of us got home to Canada we were all very ill with mold poisoning and food poisoning. I would not reccommend this resort to anyone unless you have very low standards and want to get sick.

Room Tip: The new buildings are the white ones farthest away from the ocean. They are the ones with black mold. The old ones by the ocean are not as moldy but very dated and run down.

We were moved to this hotel by our tour company (Nolitours) after the sale of our previous hotel, the Be Live Ambar. Not a great experience, if I'm honest. Weekends are extremely crowded as the hotel fills to the brim with locals. Weekends are lively, but noisy and difficult to find decent service. During the week the hotel was at less than half-capacity and seemed too empty. Food was mediocre, grounds are nice but dated design forces all guests to congregate around the single pool and single bar nearby. Would look elsewhere. Nolitours also declined to compensate me in any way for the inconvenience of having to change hotels - previous hotel was nicer - would also not recommend this tour company.
