“Excellent Bang for the Buck.”
Reviewed February 28, 2011

Stayed in building 43, second floor down by the ocean. All in all we had a very nice time. We stayed for 7 days (feb 22- 28)and did it go by fast. The weather was beautiful for the most part, as we had a few spotty showers towards the end of the week , but lasted only a few minutes each time. No complaints about the food, service or room. Yes there are a lot of stairs, but take your time and it's nothing one can't handle. I did ok even with a bum-knee. So just show up with a open mind and treat the staff & workers how you would like to be treated and you'll have a great time. If your a "sour-puss" or "a self-centered person this resort is NOT for you!!!. Take your money & attitude some place else please.

I thought the hotel, pools and grounds were very clean and nice. There seemed to be a lot of spring-breakers there which surprised me. Our room was down by the beach and was noisy during the day due to the loud music the hotel plays at the beach but quiet at night. However, when walking around the resort I walked through some loud rowdy areas. We lost electricity a couple of times one night but the staff/electricians were very friendly and got it up and running quickly.

We were at Be Live Carey for two weeks from Feb 5 - 19 2011.
We have been to several other resorts in the last 10 years and I can honestly say that Be Live Carey excells in the food category. While there may not be as much selection as larger resorts, the flavour and presentation of everything was excellent... The Brazillian ala cart was excellent, although we were not as impressed with either the Mexican or Asian.
The beach was lovely. There are 7 pools and the views are to die for especially from the top pool / lobby area. I would like to emphasize that this resort has many steps to and from the main lobby / main restaurant area. Although, I was well aware of this fact from reading reviews and the hotel description, there were several mobility challenged folks who obviously did not investigate this destination enough. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We absolutely loved our time there. The hotel was not full so it was quiet and serene, which is exactly what we looked for.

Together with our friends we stayed at Be Live Carey/Grand Ambar February 11-18, 2011 - 3 boys aged 9, 7 and 5 and a girl 12. Both got standard rooms although the rooms were very different - our in villa 304 was renovated and our friends villa 205 wasn't - the only reason they did not change the room was that it had 2 bedrooms.
There were no major problems with my room (tv had no signal - was fixed) but the safe in our friends room did not work... they had the whole safe replaced. We did not have to pay for our safes in the rooms as someone else stated in previous review.

The resort over all is very nice, not too crowded, maybe because it's on so many levels...

Our first day we we "kicked out" by other vacationers from 2 pools as it said that those were Adults only...went to see Danitza Smeins -Be Live Service Manager and the signs were taken down (those were old signs from old resort). Her office is right across from the reception - very nice and helpful. Thank you Danitza for everything! There are only 3 adults only pools: by the waterfall 2.5m deep, by the beach bar and at the spa. There is also kids pool with slide but very shallow by kids club.

Food was good, the only complain that I had was that they did not have any flowers and fruit decorations at the buffet as there are in different hotels... at the end of our stay we were filling out surveys so hopefully that will change.

Entertainment - very poor... there was only one night that we actually enjoyed Magician on Thursday night... Kids mini disco....very bad... for 15 min they just play kids songs and don't know how to get kids going...

There is a "game room" with ping pong table, foosball table and billard/pool as well as some games for kids - Scrabble and Battleship by the quiet pool. They also have some books and magazines there.

Kids went to kids club once but their wii did not work so they were not interested.

White shirts - I got really scared reading reviews before we left.. first time they approach us we said that were not interested and that was it....

We booked this hotel before it was opened...for the price we paid we were very happy. Had wonderful time. Visited Ocean World - Dolphin Encounter had a blast, really recommend that... went on a dirt buggies - if you're planning to do that bring your own bandanas as they charge $5 for one - you will need it as it gets very dusty, and smelly... Had lots of fun. We also took a taxi and visited fort St.Fillipe, Mount St Isabell and went to rum factory... 8 people for $80... not bad I would say.

I would recommend this property to friends but they need to know not to expect 5 star nor pay 5 star price. Hopefully they will have all standard rooms same as people pay same amount of money and it's not fair that some get worse rooms than others.

Any questions please e-mail me.

Just returned yesterday from Be Live Carey/Grand Ambar with my husband and 8 and 5 year old daughters. Overall we had a good time, but can't help but feel it could have been better. This was my first time to Puerto Plata but my fourth time to the D.R. The hotel is very nice and the staff work very hard to keep it clean. There are many levels to the hotel and the views are breathtaking. We didn't have any issues with the stairs, but definitely wouldn't recommend it for those with limited mobility. The new junior suites are new and spacious for a young family of 4. We were initially given the wrong room upon check in. After one day, 2 room switches and some persistence from my husband we were finally given the ocean view junior suite we paid for in building 43. I highly recommend paying the extra for a newer room. These were In the fourty something buildings (40, 41, 42 etc). We heard many stories of people in the older rooms having issues with AC, electricity etc. The food was decent, not the best. They tried hard to vary the food at the buffet but It did get a little boring after a week. We ate at the Brazilian and Asian restaurants. The Brazilian was good, LOTS of meat but it isn't really a la carte. Most of the food is buffet style with the waiters coming around with large skewers of every type of meat you can imagine. The Asian was good but we had a hard time finding something the kids would eat there. Tip - if you have picky eaters hit the buffet first. We had no issues booking the restaurants. We didn't try the Mexican but heard it was really good. Food is available almost 24/7. If the buffet was closed you could get something to eat at the snack bar by the beach next to the Mexican restaurant. From 11 pm - 6 am you could get something to eat at the buffet. It was the same thing every night though....hot dogs, hamburgers, fries and cold cuts. The entertainment staff is great and try very hard to mKe everyone happy. We enjoyed the shows most of all. They are campy and funny, sometimes a little risqué and we've never laughed so hard. If you are looking for a Las Vegas revue got to Bravissima, you won't find it here. There is a mini disco for the kids each night before the show, but my kids we too shy to participate. They have lots of pools, something for everyone. My kids especially liked the kids pool because it had a waterside. They also have a kids club, but my kids were't interested in going, to me and my husband's disappointment. The club room looked nice with a tv and video game and lots of arts and crafts. They offer babysitting and this involves leaving your kids at the kids club with a staff member. It looked safe and the kids we saw there looked like they were having fun. The beach is okay. Dark sand and water isn't as clear as Bavaro Beach, but my kids enjoyed it more. There are lots of waves to play in. The beach is a public beach, but no one really bothers you. I enjoyed watching the locals enjoy the sand and surf along with us. There is a small market to the right of the beach, but we weren't hassled by anyone like you are in Punta Cana. Ocean World is located to the left of the resort and my kids loved it, but it is expensive. The area around the resort is safe, compared to Punta Cana. You could walk around the area, to and from Ocean World and the marina and felt safe. no one hassled us. Tip - there is a market/souvenir shop on the local road on your way to Ocean World where the prices are much cheaper than the shops on the resort. The 'white shirts' are located strategically Round the resort and at Ocean World - you can't really avoid them. We weren't very hassled, but they can be persistent. We opted to go for the tour one day we had rain. It's a twist on the timeshare system and the properties are nice but we heard some bad stories of people buying into the club and not exactly getting what you pay for. We talked to one member who was generally happy but annoyed that even after joining the club they still continue to try to sell him more. It turns out this property is also a resort and you can book it at the VIP level on cheapcarribean.com It's called Lifestyle Tropical Beach Resort and Spa. We were told the big parties with fireworks next door were for the club members only, but it turns out if you book the resort next-door at the VIP level you get to participate. It turns out the club isn't as exclusive as they lead you to believe. Overall we had a good time. The staff are great, the white shirts are annoying, food is decent, beach was ok and the shows were fun. I would try another resort before going back to Be Live Carey/Grand Ambar.

The good. beautiful resort, grouds are well kept. The views are amazing. Thats about it for the good.
The bad... Terrible service unless you tip big and offen. unhelpful staff at every turn. Wear shoes in your room otherwise your feet will be black. Switched rooms 4 times for various problems including broken toilets, fridges electical problems. maids never replaced toiletries even when asked. girlfriend got food poisioning. The worst service at any buffet I have ever been at.
The ugly.. Pestered all week to join time share. Their like vultured and your the dieing animal. After my three year old got sick they only became really helpful after they found out my insurance covered everything. Then we were rushed to the hospital. Then we were pestered by the hotel doctor for a follow up exam, just so they could bill the insurance company another day. I could keep wrighting, but i don't want to waste another second on this place. DON'T BE LIVE THE GOOD REVIEWS....
I have never written a review before and have travelled to many all inclusives, but this time I felt I had to warn everone. I hate complaining but this is more of a warning. This was a hotel that was apparently renovated, but i saw nothing new the BE LIVE GRAND AMBAR is still the BE LIVE CAREY.

just arrived back yesterday--stayed in the new junior suites (43) second floor great view of ocean and pool area. great location as everything you need is is with 60 steps (no stairs) we did have some issues with making it the the top (buffet, lobby) and as the resort filled up the golf carts were really busy. food varied from excellent to a little bland but overall i think it was the best we've had in all our vacations south. The valentines day buffet was definately a 5 star. my wife always felt safe as the security presence was obvious but not obtrusive. other coup[les in our group had issues with ac but were moved to a new suite and then there were issues with parents being booked on one floor and the children on another or at another building instead of adjoining suites as it was supposed to be it was straightened out though.
al la cartes--we had 2 vouchers in our check in package with a preset time (9pm) this is different than what is the norm we tried to change our first one with no luck but were able to get dinner with our kids booked on the second one.
be careful if you have family you are traveling with you need to tell them right away it is not acceptable that your children are not booked to eat with you just because they have a seperate room.
only one 2 star show it was on sunday the rest needs alot of work but they do try hard
language with room staff is difficult but they are so polite and work so hard you just can't be upset with them.
the beach guys especially chris rock were great for getting things rolling with various games and contests had a great time there.
all in all i think it was a respectable bang for the buck
