Cofresi Palm Beach & Spa Resort
Ranked #12 of 40 Hotels in Puerto Plata
Reviewed March 24, 2012

This all started from our last vacation in Punta Cana there was 3couples,we all went to this socalled great deal called Lifestyle Vacations seminar. There was 6 of us all asking questions,we were told all we had to do was call when we were ready to go to one of their resorts or sister resorts and they would arrange the flight because they deal with so many airlines they get good deals,we would be in no less than the room we were in now(a beautiful junior suite) ,we would be chauffered back and forth to the airport in a stretch limo, caddilac or a escalade.,and we would receive a magazine every 2 mounths with deals the one he showed had deal like LasVegas for around 150 for 4 days/3 nights. We went to this seminar after breakfast so there was no drinking and we all heard the same thing (they certainly try to feed you alcohol). So all said and done we all bought a package this so called VIP .Tell it to your best friends is their moto,I would only tell it to my worst enemy. Our rep. is Charline Bodie so my wife emails her to arrange a flight for 4 of us,oh we don't do the flights you call us when your coming to book the room.So the bells started ringing then,we made up our mine then we was go through with this to see what we got into.So we booked the flight and sent a email and got a confirmation back from Charlene. Our friends that bought the Lifestyle thing too booked a trip to the same resort but they didn't use any of their weeks as they had 5 more people with them we told them we was at confresi so they booked there to.We booked this in Oct./11,so in Jan./12 we get a email from Charlene that we didn't let her know when we were coming so my wife emailed her back with the conf.#(every email we saved and still have between us and them).OK here the fun begins .we land in Porta PLata its raining there is a guy holding a sign with our names so we go to him ok he says wait here,so we waited about 10-15 min.and back he comes(we see the stretch lim. in the parking lot) ,so we get our stuff and follow this guy around the corner and here this old stretch volkswagon van what a laugh so we get in with 10 or 12 more people and some luggage was put on a 1/2 ton truck. We get to the resort not bad 1st impression so we reg. and get keys to the room OMG this is a 50 dollar sleep and run room,so we go to the front desk, we paid for a junior suite they reply that is a junior suite not what we had and was told in the last resort not only that we was at Tropical instead of Confresi here are friends are at Confresi so they said we was at Confresi and we showed them the email and they said it was all Confresi 1and2(bs).They said they couldn't do anything that day but tomorrow they would see about moving us where our friends were and we was supposed to be.That night we go to where our friends were, all we can smell is sewer when we go over there and our friends say they have to walk through sewer smelling water to get in their room as their room is down below the lawn(2 days later first thing in the morning they jack hammer the steps out and fix a broken pipe)but the resort itself still smelled like sewer all the time.We went back the next morning to the front desk and they said they couldn't move us to Confresi because it was full, after we were over there we said we would stay at Tropical we didn't want to smell sewer all the time,so we would go over and visit them everyday or night. Now they admitted Tropical wasn't Confresi where we was supposed to be.Now about the room,we argued for 3 days but they kept saying we was in a junior suite and if we wanted to pay more we could get a presidental suite after what we been through they wasn't getting another cent from us as it already cost us over a$1000 a couple more than if we just went through a travel agent. After 3 days fighting we just said to heck with it for now we will enjoy the sun and fell lucky to be here not shoveling snow. Our room number was 1001 and our friends was 4212 in our room 7 mornings out of 9 we had no hot water but plenty of pressure when we had no hot water,in the evening there was hot water but no pressure just dripping out the showerhead.our frinds never had hot water every morning either. The water wouldn't drain out the tub when you were in the shower so i went to clean the plug and everything came out threads and all so i put it on the side so they could fix it but they never did .Our room was close to the 24hr bar so 4or5 nights we were woke up early morning by people fighting and screaming and people off the resort would come here after the other bars nearby closed and they could come on the resort. This place sounded like a airport as the helicopter was flying over all the time low and it would land on a roof on the resort. We were not the only people not happy we talked to a lot of other people including another older couple we met the year before at another resort and they were very unhappy. There was a young girl electricuted that was there with 40 other people for a wedding only 12 years old and still in the hospital when we left her father said the resort offered a massage when she got out.they were from Winnipeg and going home the day after we left, the uncle said the wire in the metal tubing was stripped when they pulled it through to set up the staging for the wedding.(he was there with his cell phone video when they took it down. They staff at the front desk just give you a lot of bs because thats how there trained. The staff at the bars and restaurants are very good the maids were excellent(but we gave about $400 out in tips in 9 days).Wehad people waiting to see how we would make out with this Lifestyle package and after we talked to them they will not be buying and i strongly advise not to buy into this(if there was only 1 couple that went to this seminar then i would say we misunderstood what we were told but there was 3 couples and we own our own businesses for a few years so we asked a lot of questions). So this was 2 trips in 1 to Porta Plata at this supposed to be great resort my 1st and last.,i think i would rather go to Mexico and be shot at then all the bs from this Lifestyle crap TELL YOUR WORST ENEMY.We got a ride back in the stretch volkswagon too.We have all the emails to back everything and we sent a email to Charlene when we got back and she pretty much said too bad ,our friends forgot their jackets in the closet and it's been over a month and haven't got them back yet fed ex hasn't received them yet from the resort.oh and about their magazine every 2 months thats crap too, that is why they wouldn't let us have the magazine they showed us.They should pay their photographer $1 million this place doesn't look anywhere as nice as the pictures.

Room Tip: punta canta much better

If you're travelling from Canada with Nolitours and they are promising some kind of special treatment with your "Cameleon" bracelet, don't book it. Nolitours does not deliver on their promises and they blame the resort for any of their failings.

After expressing our concerns to Transat, we received a form letter telling us that if we read the small print in our contract, they are not obligated to deliver on anything they advertise.

We won't book with Nolitours again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra $500 per person to stay in the "Grand Ambar" / recently renovated area. Oth...

We just returned from 7 days at the Cofressi Palm Beach at Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. We would like to share with everyone our experiences at this resort. We have stayed at other resorts in other countries so we do have other points to make comparisons.
First the good news. The beach and pools were very nice and clean. The beach is better in other areas that we have stayed but Puerta Plata is on the Atlantic Ocean and not on the Caribbean Sea.
Next the bad news.
Rooms and room services: The original rooms we were given was a disgrace. There were mosquitoes smashed on the walls and were never cleaned off. There was no hot water. I looked into the outside closet where the electrical came into the building. There was a water pipe in the closet which was leaking all over the electrical wiring. This sure looked unsafe to me. I reported it to the front desk. Several days later it was not fixed. Finally we were given other rooms that were an upgrade. Again no hot water and the toilet would not flush in one of the rooms. After the resort failed to fix it by the next day I fixed it myself. The shower in the room above us was leaking so we had a waterfall in our bathroom when the upstairs occupants showed. The wait of the water was causing our ceiling to sag. I reported this to the front desk. Two days later having not been repaired our bathroom ceiling fell in. Thankfully no one was in the bathroom at the time. Also, our mini-bar refrigerator was not refilled like it was supposed to be. I request it be replenished every day for four days. Never happened. This is probably due in part to a serious language barrier with the housekeeping staff.
Food; The food at this resort was mediocre at best. The Pearl buffet was not able to keep the food warm so we started going to the other buffet, the Casablanca. The food was warmer there but they had other problems. They were constantly running out of plates and glasses. Also birds were a constant presence at this open air buffet. They were walking on the tables and landing on the dessert area and pecking at the food. There were six of us in our party and every one of us got sick (vomiting and diarrhea) at one time or another. We suspect that it was caused by the food or the presence of birds with carry micro organisms like e-coli. We turned to the specialty restaurants but they were very difficult to get into. We were able to get in three; The Blue Lagoon - good, Indochine- mediocre, Johnny’s - poor.
The Resort: The front desk (Frank) was typically surly to down right rude. They were basically non-responsive to any issues. The drinks at the bars were made with low grade liquor most of the bartenders were not very skilled. We went to a show in the theatre next to the lobby. The performers lip synced every song. One number was lip synced to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. Two dancers danced like they were fighting and they ended the number by one dancer simulating urinating on the other. Thought this was in very poor taste. On top of everything else you encounter a multitude of guys in white shirts and clipboards constantly nagging us and everyone else trying to sell timeshares.
I apologizes for the length of my review but I thought it was important to share our experience at the resort. And it is important to know that we where not the only ones because we talked to many other guest who expressed the same issues. I really cannot understand how anyone could rate this resort a four or five. A three rating is a real stretch. If you are considering going to the Cofressi Palm Beach Spa and Resort all I can say is BEWARE!!!!

My wife and I decided to stay three weeks at The Tropical (Lifestyle Resort) and the food although pretty good was getting to taste the same after being there for a period of time. I'm a big fan of Indian Food and was delighted to find the Moomtaz and it ended up being our favorite restaurant. Our thanks to Leyvi L Alvarez and the rest of the staff there for making our meals very tasty and enjoyable.

I saw the resort from internet and i thought it should be a great hotel, but at the moment that I got there, the resort itself is better than the pictures. Had a great experience during my stay in the resort, wonderful pool with all sort of drinks and the staffs of the whole hotel were really friendly to the guest and really helpful! I would definitly recommend it to anyone!

March 1-8

GOOD: The resort itself is beautiful. They take great care and effort to keep the grounds clean and presentable. There is however a sewage smell that is present sometimes but not all of the time.
There are many, many, many stairs to navigate but there are places to rest between flights. You will be in better shape and when you started your vacation. There are lots of pools that are never crowded and several swim up bars.
Food: We found the buffets and restaurants OK and the service really good.. You can’t expect the food that we are used to or prepared the way are used to. They do try hard to please you.
VIP PARTY SUNDAY: I thought this was fantastic! It was like being at an concert outdoors. The staff really put on an outstanding show. The buffet was not that good, but the entertainment was great!
ENTERTAINMENT: Every night, there was dancing on the patio which was upbeat and fun. Wait until you see the dancers on the staff move. WOW!
BARS: Once the bartenders know that you are tippers, they treat you like you are royalty. Very pleasant, hard working people.

BAD:
The check in process will frustrate you after waking up early and traveling all day. You go into the theater and sit and wait for someone to check you in. There is no first come first serve basis here. You have to make your presence known if you expect to leave this room while still awake. Once you are checked in, you go to the front desk to purchase a key to the safe in your room. This will cost you $20 for a seven day vacation.
There is no top shelf booze in any of the bars except the VIP bars which, unless you are a member, you have no access to.. The regular bars are stocked with local liquors that taste like plastic and a local beer called “Presidente.” This beer was given a thumbs up as a substitute for a BUD by a beer drinking pro.
FRONT DESK: They speak very little English which is not a good enough excuse why they seem to go out of their way not to help you.

UGLY: We had the misfortune to be booked into a room that had a mold and mildew odor. The front desk said there were no other rooms available. We had to sleep with the sliding glass doors open all night just to breathe. The mosquitoes thought we were a buffet every night. The odds of getting a hot shower was like playing the lottery. We did not have face cloths. We lived out of our suitcases as there was no dresser to put away our clothes. Our refrigerator did not work. We were told by the front desk that it was not a refrigerator even though it was stocked with beer and water and had a temperature control on it. We got no where with our complaints and decided to make the best of it.
There are no instructions by your room phone to contact anyone. You will have to climb the stairs to find answers.

THE BEACH: The beach at the resort does not have white sand and clear water as you would expect . The beach reminds me of beaches in Rhode Island. Pretty, but not Caribbean. There is shopping on the beach including a “WALL-MART.”. They are little that sell paintings, jewelry, and dresses.
There is a constant breeze like Aruba on this island which cuts down on the heat.

TIPS: DO NOT LOOSE YOUR SAFE KEY!!!!!!! I did, and had to pay $50 more for a new one.
BRING LOTS AND LOTS OF $1.00 BILLS FOR TIPPING. The resort will not part with any $1.00 bills. You can get them from the bartenders.
Don’t pay full price for anything when you go shopping at the resort, on the beach or if you go on an excursion. It is fun to bargain with these guys and they expect it. If something costs $15 offer $10 or less.
The tour company that books your excursions in the hotel does not take DISCOVER CARDS.
If you are a smoker, buy your smokes at your departure airport in a duty free store.
If you like top shelf booze, buy it at the same duty free store to bring with you.
If you are used to Maine Lobster, do not stand in the long line to get one at the Sunday Party as they are rock lobsters and mushy.
The casino looks like and claims to be a Las Vegas style casino. If you play the slots, you will not find any machine higher than 25 cents.
TIP, TIP, TIP and you will be treated like royalty.
MAKE THE BEST OF IT. YOUR ON VACATION.
