We stayed here in December as a celebration for my husband's birthday.

The weather was a little disappointing due to very heavy rain showers and tropical storm Olga blowing in on Tuesday. The staff were professional during the storm ensuring the guests were safe and by mid morning the following day everything was back to normal thanks to the hard work of everyone. I have to mention here the young man who constantly swept rain water away from the dining room during the whole week we were there... he always had a smile on his face and to us typified the attitude of the staff - polite and eager to make our holiday the best they could.

The entertainment staff worked tirelessly to get people involved but were OK about things if you didn't want to participate.

The cleanliness of the hotel in general was excellent although the room was sometimes not cleaned until very late in the afternoon.

The greatest thing about this holiday was the absence of children! The pool and all the public areas were quiet - no wineing or screaming children, and no crying during the evening - - this is a real winner.

The food was very good with a good variety, the oriental resaurant was exceptional!

Although we are not drinkers this wasn't a problem and the waiters very quickly recognised that we liked non alcoholic drinks, water and tea.

So. to summerise, this is a great hotel, small enough for you to feel special, relaxing - no children to think about - plenty to do if you want to but not compulsory, good value for money, good food with plenty of variety and a great place to go for a short or long break away from the rigours of 'normal' living.

Thank you Blue Bay for a wonderful time.

This is the first time I have ever written a review following a holiday, but, having read reviews on here before travelling, I felt I must add my two-penneth and reiterate how great this place is.

We visited from 16 Dec - 30 Dec. We flew with First Choice Premium seats - worth the upgrade if you can afford it. We were swiftly through the Airport security and in the hotel in very short time - even got a swim in before it got to dusk. NB: Like most tropical places, there are mossies (if you want to avoid them, go to Brighton). I know I get bitten so, if you're like me take precautions - don't go out at dusk and cover yourself with lotion, then you'll be ok.

We had requested a quiet room, but were given a room near the main pool. I imagined there would be entertainment so asked to move to a quiet room (blocks 7 & 8 are quiet, and even have a quiet pool). The staff were more than happy to relocate us.

The air-conditioning broke in our room twice, and the toilet blocked the first night. These were remedied immediately. Again, this is a 3rd world country - things will go wrong - it's how they fix them that's important, and the staff could not have done anymore. We were not inconvenienced in any way.

I have to agree with the comments on the food. I am an extremely fussy eater, and cannot have food cooked in oil of any sort. There was always an alternative in the main buffet. The speciality restaurants were excellent - the chateaubriand at the grill was amazing (they even prepare it with no salad cream on the potatoe if you ask, and remembered this for next time we went). I'm not particularly keen on fish, but the service and friendliness of the staff in both grill and fish restaurants is first class. As others have said, the service wasn't as prompt in the Chinese, but just ask them. The food was very good.

I have nothing but admiration for the entertainment staff. We joined in one game (hoop throwing) and from that moment, they remember your name. Even to the point of asking you to join in the dances in the evening. Love to Casanova, Tito, Happy and all the team - you are amazing. They work on average 19-20 hours a day, and survive on about 2-3 hours sleep - god knows how they have the energy to perform the dance routines, let alone keep smiling. The person who commented the staff were "lazy", I can only think must have been staying at another hotel.!! Thomas at the beach bar was also amazing, and I have wonderful photos.

The room was adequate, with air-conditioning and hot water (I had read reports on here you couldn't get hot water after 7pm - that is rubbish. I usually showered around then, and showered again before bed to remove the mossie lotion - no problem with the water).

The beach and bay are very nice - you can walk around to the right and walk right around the bay, if you want to get away and be completely alone.

If you want 5* luxury, go somewhere else and pay 5* prices. If you want a small-medium sized clean, well maintained hotel, with friendly people, then this is the place for you. For us, being an adult only meant this was the superb place for a quiet relaxing holiday, with as much adventure as you wanted to find, if you wanted to find it.

Will we go back? I certainly hope so. It was real value for money. Love to everyone there - thanks for the G&Ts...

Sandra

Spend several days at the Blue Bay Getaway Villas Doradas in Puerto Plata, DO in December of 2007.

ROOMS
Be aware that the rooms are very bare bones. Hard mattress and bed linens were not very clean. Pillows in need of replacement. Large gaps below the doors allowing mosquitoes to enter the room. Low water pressure and poor lighting. Called up for towels and laundry bags - never delivered.

MAINTENANCE
Fridge did not work in one room, had to contact maintenance three days in a row to get it fixed. Television died on day two. It took two days to get replaced. Poor follow up by management - never a note or an apology.

RESERVATIONS
Getting a reservation in one of the restaurants was almost impossible. We were told that they were completely booked although the restaurant was almost empty when we stopped to check.

BUY A RESERVATION
Frontdesk clerk called our room to let us know that a reservation had cancelled and we could "buy" the reservations for ten US dollars!!! Outrageous!!!

FRONT DESK
Front desk and concierge service left much to be desired. They did not even have a map of Puerto Plata available for us. Late night, there was little presence of staff in or around the hotel. We found the front desk clerk to be asleep on a blanket behind the front desk.

FOOD
Food left much to be desired. Buffet restaurant served and recycled the same items day after day. Disguising the same piece of meat with a different topping and a new name. Breakfast was allright with the exception of the fruit juices. Juices were so watered down, they merely resembled colored water. Instead of conducting meaningless walk-throughs and inspections, the General Manager should sit down and eat the food.

On a positive note, the restaurant staff and staff in charge of entertainment were incredible. Loved their smiles, attitude and hospitality. We tipped each meal for their outstanding service.

Dear JWH2002

We have read your review regarding your recent holiday to the Dominican Republic and to BlueBay Villas Doradas.

First of all, I can assure you that the various criticisms made have been very carefully noted, and would like to thank you for bringing these details to our attention. As I am sure you will appreciate, it is only by a careful study of our client’s reports that we can correct possible deficiencies in our programme and improve our overall standard of service. All criticisms are therefore always treated very seriously.

We certainly regret the situations you encountered, and would appreciate you accepting our most sincere apologies if these were a source of disappointment. We highly value the opinions and comments provided by guests and continuously strive to provide an exceptional quality holiday. Naturally, when one of our valued guests takes the time to outline experiences such as those noted, it is much cause for concern.

Our weekly reports are based on all incidences and compliments reported by our guests either through their in-site Reps or directly to the hotel management whilst they were still resident in the hotel. Please note that in those files we have no records of the observations mentioned in your review. It is very important to make the hotel management aware of possible deficiencies that arise as we can take proper measures to correct them whilst make an impact on guests satisafaction and their overall stay.

On the other hand, the resort prides itself to make all our staff and management visible and approachable to all our guests with the objective of ensuring them a pleasant holiday that exceeds their expectation.

We are concerned about the comment made about the food as we strive hard to offer a large variety of national and international cuisine which I personlly taste before it is displayed and served to our valuable guests. It is regretted that some of the cuisine was not to your liking.

We do appreciate your comments and the information you have provided will have an impact on any improvements that may be necessary to maintain the level of quality that is well known at BlueBay Resorts.

I trust that the above has clarified the situation and hope that you have not been deterred from booking with BlueBay Resorts for future holidays.

Yours sincerely,

Oscar Lora

This hotel wasn't the greatest. We were prepared to stay at Casa Colonial until our WestJet Travel agent talked us into this place. We had a regular room and were so revolted we upgraded to a villa. While there we had hot water rarely, another couple told us they didn't have hot water the entire stay. The pools are pretty nice, the drinks are good, the food was very bland and not very good. The best a la carte restaurant was definitely the seafood one, even if you don't like seafood they'll make you dishes without the seafood. The ocean wasn't very nice, in fact we didn't even go in, which we did want to. The lobby is quite nice. If money isn't a concern I really suggest Casa Colonial, we went to look at some rooms there as we were considering moving resorts altogether.

Having just returned from Blue Bay and read some recent reviews I would like to add my comments especially having read some of the poor comments made.
Flight was with First Choice on Star Premier, excellent service.
On arrival at the hotel which is only a short bus trip from the airport which is good after a long haul flight we were greeted with cold towels and a welcoming drink. A member of staff took us through some details, explained the a la carte restaurants and how to book our complementary meals, gave us our keys and the porter accompanied us to our room and explained the air conditioning, showed us the fridge and advised that the water would be replaced each day but if we wanted the mini bar re-filling it would cost $10. Not much in the mini bar, 2 bottles of beer, 1 Sprite and 1 Coke, however we did not intend on spending much time in our room and are not really big drinkers.
Our first full day we met Casanova who managed to talk us into having a game of ping pong, he must be good as we NEVER normally participate in any games etc, we chose the hotel as it was adult based and were looking for a quiet time lazing by the pool! This was not a bad experience we both enjoyed ourselves and found we had already made friends with the animacion team who I must say work really hard to make everyone feel welcome. They all stop to say hi and are not foreceful in any way if you don't want to take part.
The evening entertainment is not brilliant but they do their best. The magician and the play back show were excellent, I have not laughed so much, Tony's Whitney Houston, Happy Boy's Michael Jackson and Tony & Casanova's 'Time of my life' are not to be missed.
Food - I am fussy but I never failed to find something to eat, vegetable soup did appear a lot on the menu, but hey most people do like it! We tried the Oriental and the Grill Bar, Oriental was good, not quite what we expected but the food tasted good. The grill bar was excellent, good service and fantastic steak!
I must say that if you want good coffee and plenty of it Vicente is your man for breakfast and lunch, he always has a smile for you and soon enough knows how you like your coffee, well done Vicente your customer service is excellente!
Rooms - we were in block 5 far enough away from the entertainment if you wanted an early night, which to be honest was more times that I would like to admit. We were shattered most nights having been lay by the pool every day, it is so tiring :-) I would suggest that if you do want to be in a quiet area then an e mail to the hotel asking for a quiet room may be helpful.
Room was cleaned daily and we had clean towels and turn down every night. I do not think our bathroom had been updated, it was quite small and not quite up to the standard I would have liked but I certainly would not consider changing my room because of this. Beds were hard, however, not a problem for us as we have a firm mattress at home, I do not think that one can expect hotels in the Dominican to have mattresses to suit us all and if they did no doubt expensive mattresses would only increase the prices which would not be good.
Alcohol - If you wanted to drink you could, there was plenty, however if you didn't it was not a problem, staff did not treat us any differently.
I must say the Plaza is no more than 5 minutes away, yes you do get asked many times if want/need their business (whatever they are selling). The first visit to the plaza I did find difficult, but once you say 'non gracias' with a smile it is not a problem, remember that this is the Dominican way. All subsequent visits were not a problem. Our main reason for going to the plaza was for the football - which is shown in Phil's Bar, staff there were always friendly.
We did wander along the beach a couple of times, but never sat there for any length of time. We didn't get approached once by 'sellers'. If you want some white sand and blue sea, turn left at the beach and wander along a few hundred yards and it is there if you want it.
Hopefully I haven't bored you too much but I have tried to be as honest as I can - Oscar Lora and his Team are working really hard to make this resort one of the best, and I believe on speaking to some staff that Oscar is always prepared to listen to any suggestions. He is always to be seen wandering around and speaking to many people, well done Oscar for all your hard work and hopefully we will return soon.
