arrived back 2md September very enjoyable holiday ,good flights hotel very clean gardens lovely nice pools kept nice clean, only downside the locals who arrived at weekend don't believe in queuing for food just push past you otherwise they behaved very well, went on outback safari trip really worth the money the best food we had on the whole holiday plus really good guides and did Dominican night with the reps which was excellent now i have been afraid to say i wont be going back as there is not much to do for 14 days it gets boring, all the staff work very hard , but the entertainment of a night is terrible you wouldnt stay up to see it , i am glad i have been but as i ave said i wont be going back

Room Tip: room was on ground floor near to beach was very quiet

We booked this nearly a year in advance as a party of 14. We heard about the issues at the weekends and were apprehensive after the recent newspaper articles. Fortunately we didn't experience any problems with excessive guests at weekends, however there was a lot more noise and we had locals in our block for a weekend and they were very noisy until about 3am. One of our party had some property stolen from their balcony which may be coincidental that it was the weekend.

The rooms are very tired and in need of refurbishment, we moved room once and a couple of rooms in our party had leaking toilets, broken fans. This is certainly not 4 star accommodation, you don't get shampoo or any other toiletries other than a soap dispenser and the Air con is not very efficient. The mini bar was not topped up as regularly as it should have been (every other day) The room was always very clean and the balcony was a good size.

The pool at the Merengue Gardens isn't that inviting, very busy and loud, but fortunately we had the use of the Meregue Village pool which was lovely as that hotel is closed so it was very quiet. The beach is lovely and there are plenty of sunbeds.

The food was ok, plenty of choice and varied each night. Mexican night was the best in the buffet restaurant. We ate in he steakhouse but it wasn't anything spectacular. You can eat all day long at the pool bars and they have snacks until 2am!

All of the staff were very friendly and the Thompson rep couldn't do enough to help. We had a great holiday but we would not return to this hotel.

The location was fantastic, staff and people very helpful and friendly. The ability to choose which of the pools or the beach to use was great you could join in the fun or chill if you wanted.
We had an extremely enjoyable fortnight and would return again to this hotel.
The overall value for money was 9 out of 10.

Room Tip: Just ask for one near the beach

We went for a birthday party in a large group inthe middle of July. The hotel grounds are lovely and the staff in the restaurants, bars and housekeeping are friendly and very helpful. They will go out of their way to fulfill a request and don't expect a tip every time.
However, the front desk is terrible. They could not find some of the reservations. We had one couple that waited in the lobby over 45 minutes as they said the reservation was cancelled. When we inquired on the status later, the front desk clerk "magically" found the envelope sitting on the desk with all of other check in envelopes.
The "hotelclub group" which makes the reservations for the tours is very slippery and promises discounts but then doesn't provide them once you book. If you can book directly with the excursion providers. We really liked the excursions - Ocean World - swim with the sting rays, dolphins and sharks, Paradise Island snorkeling, Horse-Back riding and City Tour. The excursions were much better than expected and reasonably priced. Also don't book the hotel transports to the airport with this hotelclub group as they lose some of them and then try to charge you more.
The food at the resort is ok. The food at the buffet is much better than in the reservation restaurants. Also the reservation restaurants are very limited with the seating times - either 6:30 or 8:30pm. Again, the staff in the buffet are wonderful.
I would not recommend the massages on the beach as they charge a lot and are not very good.
We were there for a weekend and did not experience the bad time that other reviewers had with the local people coming to the hotel. They did not "takeover" the resort and were not loud.
If you don't speak Spanish, the entertainment is difficult as they mainly speak Spanish and the English is not understandable. In addition, the main announcer was rude and very condescending to the guests. It was almost like he was making fun of people.

We arrived on the 19th of august in the middle of the afternoon after a long flight and the transfer being only 40 mins we got to the hotel pretty quickly.
We were greeted with fruit punch and our envelope with our keys, pool cards (for towels) and stickers for our cases so they could bring them to our room for us, the porter works extremely hard in heat and humidity so please make sure he knows he is appreciated with a small tip.
First thing we noticed when we went to the pool that afternoon was how quiet it was, no matter what time of day you went to the pool you could get at least 3 sun loungers together with at least 1 being shaded.
Late in the afternoon the waiters would come out to take drinks orders and every other day they would cook something nice either by the pool or on the beach.
Id like to say nice things about the animation team but seeing as only one spoke to use during the whole week I cant say anything.
The rooms are dated and they can do with a refurb but you only sleep there, the balconies are huge, you could have had a whole other bedroom out there lol! the maids work hard as do all staff.
The gardeners do a great job and even ask if you would like a fresh coconut (for a tip) and he will cut it open for you right in front of you.
the food was amazing, I didn't eat meat all week as there was an amazing supply of fresh fish all week, the drinks were great as well, banana mamas from the bar are awesome! Also special mention to our dinner waiter, willy, who always had a smile on his face.
the weekends we were dreading wernt so bad, locals still came but 95% of them were very respectable (the other 5% you would find anywhere in the world)
we did ocean world (shark, sting ray and dolphin swims), zip n ride and catermaran trips while we were there, the catermaran was by far the best in my opinion, we did pirate day and Sonia (Jackie sparrow) made it a great day.
Special mention to Sylvia and belisa the reps who were always there if you needed anything.

Not as bad as expected... But still not good enough!

After spending two weeks here with my girlfriend from 4th August - 18th August, I have decided to write a completely honest and unbiased review.
We had an enjoyable holiday but wouldn't really recommend this hotel.
First of all, this is nowhere near a 5* hotel! Or even a 4* for that matter! First Choice should be ashamed that this is being advertised as such.
The staff make this hotel a much more pleasant place as 95% of them are absolutely amazing. From the animation team through to the barstaff and maids, I have never come across such hardworking people. Special mentions go to Mini Me in Animation Team, Belisa and Sylvia the First Choice/Thomson reps and Junior and Juan Pablo who are waiters in the buffet restaurants.
The food on the whole is average. To be fair to the hotel, there is always something that even the fussiest of eaters could have everyday such as the salad or pizza but after a couple of days, you get bored of seeing these items every day. The main problem is the actual quality of the food though. Even the stuff that tastes fairly nice, doesn't have the quality you would expect. There is an exception when the fresh pasta was being served as there was a huge range of veg, pasta, meat and sauce that would be cooked in a wok in front of you and served fresh. This was delicious.
There is the a la Carte restaurant which is better and guests are meant to get one visit per week. There is a Steakhouse and an Italian and we ended up managing to go 6 times over the course of our holiday although it's not exactly an a la carte restaurant. You basically have an all inclusive buffet for starter and you order one of three or four dishes for your main which could be either beef, pork, lamb, chicken or steak and all come with veg and a potato.
The grounds are well kept and you will always see gardeners and maids working 24/7. The rooms are extremely dated and in need of a refurb but again, the maids do a good job at keeping them clean the majority of times. The beach at the resort is not what you'd expect a Caribbean beach to be although it is a get away from the main pool.
The hotel has had a well documented amount of trouble with locals attending of a weekend and unfortunately, this is still a problem. They turn up of a Friday and Saturday in their 100s and unfortunately, a lot are bad mannered and rude. To such an extent, we had 4 members of staff mention to us how unhappy they are that they allow the locals in. Not all can be stereotyped though and some were very friendly. The hotel gets too busy and the queues for the buffet restaurant are ridiculous at times. The main Merengue pool is the 'lively' pool anyway along with the Bachata pool. Although when the locals attend, it is absolutely carnage. I can only be glad that the hotel have recently opened the Merengue Gardens pool for international guests only. It is lovely and quiet and a much needed get away.
The evening entertainment is very mixed. The Animation team work extremely hard but some of their shows lack an awful lot of imagination. One night, we were watching four female members of the audience act out a play. This was done in slow motion, double speed, drunk and Chinese. As you can imagine, we were quite shocked that we actually managed to sit and stay watching for as long as we did. On the other hand, the professional acts were watchable and some were actually impressive.
All in all, this is fine for people wanting a basic hotel with almost guaranteed weather. Don't be fooled by the brochures though and expect 5* luxury as you will end up bitterly disappointed as myself and the majority of other guests were.

Stayed here for 2 weeks from 12th Aug and must admit I was very sceptical after reading mixed reviews (a lot of them bad) but was worrying for nothing. On arrival, we were greeted with a non alcoholic fruit punch drink and a envelope with our keys and stickers which you stick on your luggage and the porters then bring them to your room for a small tip. The rooms are quite basic and a bit outdated and could do with a refurb but adequate. On the downside, we were only given 3 beds for 2 adults and 2 children so our 6 year old had to share with one of us and the air conditioning leaked one night but was resolved that day but that could happen anywhere. Could not fault the staff, very friendly and worked tirelessly all day. Hotel was spotlessly clean and maid service was daily, gardens were kept immaculate. The hotel did get busy at the weekends with the locals but not over busy and had no trouble like some people have reported on here. This may be due to the fact that their children go back to school in August. The Merengue and Bachata pools were quite busy with lots of activities going on but we preferred the Merengue Village (Mambo) pool which was more relaxed and a bit quieter. Always sunbeds available especially on the beach but would advise wearing water shoes when going into the sea. Done 3 trips, Mega Extreme (jumping off waterfalls, 7 ziplines and horseriding), Oceanworld which would definitely recommend but is quite pricey if you want photos/DVDs and Paradise Island was also very good with great snorkelling and fish feeding from your hand. These trips were all day trips with food included. Entertainment staff and bar staff were very good and tried hard but a bit disappointed with some of the evening shows as we had trouble keeping young children amused. Good variety of food and plentiful even at the weekends. Small tips go a long way with staff and would reserve your table for you. Overall a very good holiday and would return again.
