We had 2 lovely weeks at the Merengue beginning of May and thoroughly enjoyed it. I read lots of reviews on this resort and was a little worried as to what to expect. The room was comfortable and quite big enough, the mini bar was a bonus. Air con and ceiling fan worked well. There were quite a few things that we took which we didnt need i.e waterproof jacket ( there were umbrellas provided in the room) The bathroom had a selection of soaps, shampoos and showercaps.
The restaurants had a very nice selection of foods and contrary to what other people have said I found the food at the steakhouse and italian were very nice.

There is plenty of drinks to choose from, there was a cocktail special advertised every day but they were a little slushy for me and you can ask them to put in extra rum or whatever else makes up your cocktail. Waiters used to walk along the beach with trays of drinks which was very nice. they called it happy hour.

What can I say about the staff? from the cleaners to the bar staff the entertainment team and the waiters in the restaurants I never met one unhappy person. They were all great. We met some very nice holidaymakers to, from all countries but was amazed to meet a couple from my home town. Small world.

We did 2 nice trips ocean world and vip paradise island. They were both great. We would love to go again, a long journey for us though but well worth it.

My wife and I would advise readers of this report that we are a late middle aged English couple who have both recently retired and our report is intended to advise similarly aged people of all nationalities.
We stayed at the Riu Merengue from 12th April to 2nd May 2008, a total of 20 nights.
Our holiday was the best value for money holiday that we have had to date and we would stress the value for money aspect rather than describe the Riu Merengue as a cheap hotel.
To describe the hotel as cheap would be to demean what is an excellent hotel.
We booked our Thomas Cook Holiday with Elite Travel who advertise on ITV Teletext. We paid only £849.00 each, which equates to a daily cost of less than £43.00, all inclusive. This is unbelievable value for money when one considers the near 4000 mile flight.
Although the following has nothing to do with the hotel,we mention it to advise potential travellers to the Dom Rep of what they may experience on arrival. Our arrival at Puerto Plata airport was chaotic. Three flights arrived within minutes of each other with the result that perhaps 900 people were compelled to fill in immigration forms in a building that was totally inadequate for such a number. After filling in the forms, we joined an unorganised queuing line in order to pay the $10.00 immigration tax. After paying the tax, we were each given a credit card sized ticket that was subsequently thrown into a waste bin by another official upon us joining the queue for the passport check booths.
After passing through passport checking, we endured a long wait for our suitcases at the ageing baggage carousel.
Please be advise that there are lots of official "bag snatchers" who will grab your cases off your airport trolley and carry them to your bus / taxi, for a tip of course.

Our check in at the hotel was a quick, efficient and pleasant experience. An envelope was handed to us containing our room key, safe key and beach towel cards and whilst we enjoyed a welcome drink, our bags were transported to our room by a bell boy. A hotel official escorted us to our room.

Our room, #1205 was ideally situated in a quiet area, about mid way between the Merengue and Bachata receptions, restaurants etc.
The room was of good size with two large beds. All facilities worked satisfactorily. The air conditioning was adequate, the ceiling fan functional, the hair dryer good and the shower, although non thermostatic, worked well with good pressure. The wardrobes were of good size and had lots of useful hangers, not those awful fixed ones. The room safe was free of charge and had a lock and key, not the fiddly combination type. Our room also had a mini-bar refrigerator that was restocked every two days with beer, both canned and bottled, pepsi and 7 up and one gallon plastic bottles of drinking water. We tipped our mini bar man a few times when we saw him and he did not let us down.

Hotel location. There are three hotels on the Riu complex, the Mambo, the Merengue and the Bachata. The Merengue is in the centre and is therefore well placed for guests to share the facilities of the other hotels. Apart from the pretty countryside, there is nothing of interest within walking distance of the hotel by road. For security reasons, we only left the complex on paid excursions.
The beach is beautiful, not the white sand of the Caribbean but a beigy coloured sand of good quality with some shingle in parts.
We would recommend that guests use water shoes when swimming or walking along the beach as there are rocks, shell and coral in the shallows off the beach.
The beach has lots of beautiful mature coconut palm trees and other varieties of tree providing partial shade. We spent most of our beach days at the Bachata end of the beach where it is quieter. The hotel gardeners "de-nut" the trees therefore there is no danger of a coconut falling on you in the often breezy conditions. There are no parasols on the beach and the trees only give partial shade. We did not experience difficulty in finding sun loungers in shade at the Bachata end of the beach even though the "Towel Olympic Biathlon" is contested every day. The swimming pools of all the hotels have their regular contestants who daily stroll out at 6.00 am and earlier to stake their claim to the choicest loungers and parasols, then they complete the biathlon with a sprint finish to secure a few beach loungers before going back to bed. The hotel management should put a stop to this selfish and greedy behaviour.
We enjoyed daily walks after breakfast along the beach in the surf, starting at the Mambo end and walking along to the Bachata end at which point we climbed the small hill to get to the footpath leading to the Bachata beach. The latter beach is a public beach and not enclosed by the hotel. It is a quiet beach and not frequented by many hotel guests or local Dominicans. The sea is much calmer at this beach being in the lee of the Bachata headland. Unfortunately there are no hotel sun loungers on this beach. A must to see is the view from the Wedding Gazebo at the top of the Bachata headland. It is beautiful with heavily wooded hills beyond the Riu complex and the lovely bays on both sides of the headland.
We must mention the beautiful gardens within all three resorts. They are a pleasure to walk around and are a tribute to the hard working gardeners. Take them a few beers from your mini bar and give them to the gardeners discreetly, They will appreciate them.
Hotel food. We found the food to be of very good quality with lots of choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Although our holiday was of 20 nights duration, we did not find the food choice repetitious. We took breakfast in the Bachata restaurant where we could sit on the verandah overlooking the bay.
Only once did we bother to queue for a reservation for the Steak House Restaurant. The meal was satisfactory however the service was so slow that we did not try it again.
During the latter days of our holiday, several serveries were taken out of use in the restaurant for evening dinner, resulting in long queues at the remaining serveries and limiting the choice of food.
To date we have not stayed in a hotel with such an excellent hygiene conscious regime. There are maids dispensing antiseptic hand gel at all restaurants and public toilets.
There is supposed to be a dress code for dinner, however the code is not enforced by the hotel management. It's a pity that so many young people of all nationalities think it appropriate to arrive for dinner dressed in tee shirts, beach shorts and sandals.
Shame on the hotel management for allowing them to do so.
Hotel entertainment. We enjoyed some of the shows, particularly the Madonna show but others were not to our taste. We do not enjoy shows where hotel guests are invited on stage to make fools of themselves for the amusement of others. What we do like about such all inclusive holidays is the opportunity to meet and talk to guests of a similar age to ourselves from other countries, particularly Canada and the United States. We met a charming lady Lutheran Church Minister and her husband from Canada and a "good ole boy" farmer from Georgia . (We like Bluegrass Country Music .) We also met a very likable and knowledgable couple from Belgium who share our love of classical music.

To conclude, we would advise that we got just what we wanted from our holiday at the Riu Merengue. A relaxing holiday with good accommodation, a lovely beach, good food and pleasant company for a very low price.
We have been so impressed by this and previous holidays at Riu hotels that we are going again to another Riu hotel, the Riu Tequila in Playa del Carmen, Mexico in early June 2008 for two weeks.

  • Liked — comfortable accommodation, good food, good beach.
  • Disliked — guests reserving sun loungers, unenforcement of dress code.

Just got back from the Riu Mambo, and it was a great stay. My wife and I are a young married couple and went for a short trip of four nights and five days. This was the first all-inclusive resort that we stayed at although we have gone on an all-inclusive cruise. It was a fantastic deal for the price, and it was great that you can use all three hotels. I would go back in a second but will probably travel to other locations around the world. We are very laid back people and not picky at all. The only reason I did not give it a 5 is because nothing is perfect but this is close to it.

Negative Aspects: My wife and I did not mind the walking because everything is spread out and actually enjoyed the exercise. There were people complaining but did not bother us. There is no transportation around the resort and would not recommend it for older or people with disabilities. The dinner reservations can only be made from 10 AM to 10:15 AM but that did not bother us because we preferred the buffet and found it to have better food. No restaurants to snack but we ate more than enough at breakfast, lunch, and dinner to hold us over. The shows at night were not good but we were drinking so it did not bother us.

Positive Aspects: The people of Dominican are extremely nice and have not found nicer people in our travels. The staff are quick to say "holla" and help you when needed. We are not picky eaters and found the food to be great! The buffet had a lot of options with a lot of choices, hard to leave the place not satisfied. We liked the variety of people with mostly Europeans and nice to hear British accents all over the place. The rooms we felt were very comfortable and big for two people with a balcony. The place is well kept and very clean. The beach is rocky and found mambo to have the best sand. No problem getting chairs at anytime during the day. The extrusions were awesome and highly recommend them. Quick service at the bars!

Stayed from 5/22 to 26. The only airconditioning they have is in the rooms. After a very long walk to our room we were soaking wet. The AC did not work. we called and this guy removed the filter and it looked like it was not changed in years. No view at all. Overall the place is very clean. The food was not good and the dinning room is soo hot. The shows are not good and it is also very hot. The pool and beach are very nice. Plenty of lounge chairs and great places for shade. The staff tries very hard to entertain you but the shows are poor. When you arrive at the Airport you must pay Ten Dollars a person in cash only to get into the country. We booked a car in advance from Isaira Tours (www.isairatours.com) 100 dollars for a nice , VERY cold van for the four of us to and from the hotel. I recommend them highly. They meet you with a sign and then return promptly for the trip to POP.That was the most cooling part of the trip.Overall for the price it is not bad. I don't recommend Riu Mambo for older people or families. For young couples it OK

Just returned today 26th May 2008 from a two week stay at the Merengue. The flight with First Choice was excellent especially in Star Class Premier. We are in our early 30's from England. The holiday was excellent value!

A very busy hotel which shares with two other hotels. There is probably between 2000 - 3000 staying at any one time across the resort however if you are careful, use the beach which is great (bring some beach shoes) and eat early for Breakfast (which is the best part of the day), a later lunch and find the quieter areas of the buffet you can get some peace! In the evenings all hotels are very busy, the entertainment is in full force, everybody getting their dinners, bars are busy and quite an experience! Again you can search out quieter places, i.e reception areas if you need some peace but there are not many quieter spots!.

The entertainment is ok. Some amazing dancing but quiet a lot of miming! 14 days was enough but you have to admire their effort.

The staff are fanstastic. Tipping does help but they seem really pleased for the odd dollar. I ordered $200 single dollar bills from my bank and they were ideal for tipping, small purchases and ready for emergencies.

Went on the Safari trip and Ocean World. Both trips booked through First Choice were great. Had a Sea Lion and Dolphin encounter ($300) dollars approx. Sounds a lot but an amazing day.

The rooms are a bit tiered, bathroom small and air con not amazing but a good size and reasonably comfortable for two weeks. Too hot to sit on the balcony to be honest. Talking of heat we had no rain apart from the day we left! It was really hot! We are not great in the heat and quite pale so we tended to get to the beach by 8-00 am, have a dip, sit on the beach until 2 ish following the shade around the palm tree praying for wind from the sea! Had some lunch and then got out of the sun until 4-30, returning for another swim! It was fanstastic on the beach. The sea was lovely and warm. Being the Atlantic it changed every day, calm, choppy or the odd big waves.

One note of caution, if you go out into the sea and hit the rocks they have sea urchins on so wear sea shoes. Normal bathers are fine, its only if you decided to go further out.

We were bitten a few times so pleased we took anti malaria tablets. Boots spray didn't make a difference? Perhaps get more of a specialist brand but not a huge problem!

We also noticed a number of casts, bandages, wheel chairs and crutches appearing so assumed that quite a crowd were slipping on tiles around the hotel / room so be careful!

In 14 days I was ill one day with heatstroke a think as I burnt my shoulders from talking to some people in the sea for an hour! Thats with factor 50 on! My wife was ill one day. Again probably the heat rather than the food which was excellent, although two
weeks was enough!

We were warned not to drink any water, not even shower water particles!

In all an excellent holiday, you see of people / nationalities from different walks of life and food / drinks superb. You get what you pay for but I believe we had an excellent holiday for the money helped by the friendly staff and amazingly clean grounds. Being busy you need to have some patience and just go with the flow but don't be put off.

Stayed at this hotel in March/April 2008. We tried to do a little research before we went, and thought we had - but now realise that we should have read between the lines a little more.

The location is very nice, with lovely sandy beaches and green hills behind making for nice views. We found the hotel to be very clean and the staff ever so helpful. The rooms are a little basic, but for the cost you cannot expect more. The rooms are in villas, which hold eight rooms, and are located in nicely kept gardens. The block we were in was in a peaceful spot, away from the road/hotel. We could not fault the rooms, or the service at all.

The beach wasn't too busy, as a lot of people, especially those with families tended to stay around the pool. The pool area seemed to have the same CD on repeat for 2 weeks, and the pool had to be closed 3 times whilst we were there as someone did a number 2 in it!! Nice!

I never really believed that people get up at the crack of dawn to put their towels out, but they did!! We couldn't be bothered to get into all of that, but it was very frustrating when there were towels out in all the spots under trees etc,, and the owners didn't show up till much later in the day. There we also lots of fag butts in the sand, and I saw a woman flick her fag into the sea, right near a young child who was swimming. I smoke myself, and would never leave a fag but in the sand - there are plenty of bins etc around. Some people are either lazy, or don't know any better.

I had read a few negative reviews about the state of the sea. Although it is not crystal clear, it is not that bad. It can be a little rough, but nothing anybody who can swim would have trouble with. There are some sharp rocks, and little black sharp things which I got stung by, again, didn't really cause a problem. Talking of stinging things, if you react to mosquito bites, take plenty of Jungle Formula or the like, and make sure it has the high deet concentrate. I forgot to spray it on one evening, and had 40 very very big, sore and itchy spots - also looked dreadful! There were a few people with infected bites which looked very sore.

The food - I also read some negative reviews on the food, but we thought it was fine. There is a decent salad bar, and a lot of variety. The beach bar serves lunch, but we preferred to go to the main restaurant. The beach bar turns into a restaurant in the evening, but you have to book. They serve steak or Italian - no great shakes, but then it is not an Italian, or a proper steak house - both were ok, and it was much more peaceful than the main restaurant.

I did get ill for a few days, and I was very sick. I'm not too sure whether it was the food - I think it was more likely the fact that so few people washed their hands after coming out from the loo!! It was quite revolting! They have the alcho gel, but this will not clean hands properly! I was really careful, but still picked up the dreaded bug.

Entertainment - When we read the reviews, this is what we should have picked up on; The terms 'enthusiastic', 'good effort', 'interesting' should have been a hint. The animation team DO put in the effort, and it WAS interesting, but the team are not professionals in the arts of entertainment. They have a weekly rota for the shows, so if you are there for 2 weeks, you will see it twice. The 'acts' also rotate round the hotels (3 hotels in the resort). We gave up on the cringey evenings, and read some books! We ventured to the 'nightclub' Pacha a few times which was ok, and quite a laugh. One experienced 'Caribbean traveller' said that the entertainment was the poorest quality he had experienced on the islands, and we should not think that the other resorts are like it. Someone else said they made pontins entertainment look fab. It's all ok, but if entertainment is high on your list of priorities, may not be for you.

All in all, it was an ok holiday, but we would not return, as the type of resort it is, is not our cup of tea. I am not the kind of person to be negative, or moan, and I appreciate that many who read this, having been there, will strongly disagree with my comments, but not everyone likes the same kind of thing. Put it this way - before we went, we had seen a few episodes of Benidorm, and it wasn't that dissimilar! Classy it is not! But hey, for the low cost, you do get some nice sun and relaxation.
