We stayed at the Mambo as a group of 5 ( 3 adults, 2 kids), and i must say it is was our best holiday ever! We've travelled quite abit and found this to be the best.
The staff are very attentive to you and go out of their way to make you happy, especially sr. diaz . He was lovely and even took us to the supermarket to buy Malibu as they don't have it in the Hotel bars. Entertainment were also very friendly and try to get you involved in activities day and night., although they never pester. They worked so hard to entertain everyone and make sure you have a great time.
The food was fantastic with lots of variety, and the dining staff were very helpful and arranged to have a cake made for my hubby's 40th- they also came through the dining room singing 'Happy Birthday' whilst playing instruments i,e drums etc which was fantastic!
The rooms are cleaned and made up everyday and the minibar will be restocked everyday if needed. The maids were very cheery and seem to not mind clearing up after us everyday (our kids are untidy guests).
Overall a fantastic holiday, and to be honest i think the staff make it! There is never a dull moment in the Mambo!

I just returened home from RIU MERENGUE in puerto plata. Stayed for 7 days with my boyfriend. We overall enjoyed this resort and found no singnificant difference between any of the three RIUs located in the resort complex. ( MAMBO< BACHATA)
Appearance- Resort is very clean and well maintained, washrooms were exceptionally clean.
Rooms- Cozy and small but nice, a/c worked well and it was often too cold, two double beds pushed together but comfortable to sleep in.
Beach- Nice beach, not white sands but very clean and plenty of places to tan, never had a problem finding a bed. Bachata beach is a little shady with trees overhead, mambo and merengue were open concept.
Pool- All three pools were great, Bachata pool with swim up bar. Kids pools located at all three also.
Bars- Plenty of bars located through the resort with plenty of slushi drinks and domestic alcohol.
FOOD- Food was great. Only tried the buffet at Mambo and Merengue and always plenty to offer. A la carte restaurants remained the same for all three resorts, Steak house which was ok and Italian which was also ok however you can often recieve the same foods as a la carte one night at the buffets.
Plenty of entertainment. Merengue always was lively. We found there was more of a middle aged crowd at our resort but there was enough partying going on. If you are looking for a quiet time Bachata might be a better place as it always seemed a little more quiet on that side. Overall for the price of the vacation I wouldnt suggest paying more to stay at Bachata. All three resorts were very much a like. No bracelets were given at Merengue and Mambo, Bachata had bracelets.
Excursion tips- if you plan to go white water rafting or horse back riding be aware that it will be a long bus ride approximatly 2 hours each way. Riu hotels are located in there own bay and it will take you longer to get anywhere. Ocean world is great but expect to spend the whole day there. Dunn buggying is also great and it took 3 hours riding in small villages and jungle like scenery ( you get very dirty). Be prepared to bring along candy for the kids, it is culture shock when you see how people can live, kids are usaully on the street waiting for you to throw things, We didnt have candy and found ourselves throwing peso coins to some kids.
OVERALL Riu merengue is a great resort. I have stayed in Riu ochos rios in Jamaica and it was a little bit nicer with a higher value but the destination is also very different. Any questions please contact me.

We just returned on January 15 after spending 2 great weeks with our Merengue family. We had a fantastic time. Thanks to Pickachoo, Elvis and Cokeacola , Shakira and Blackie for making us feel like family. This was our second visit to this resort. The Mega truck tour is a must to do. It did rain while we were there, infact we got 20 inches in one day! Our second week was much better with temp of 35 degree's. The service was superb although at the end of two weeks the food did get a little repetitive but we certainly didn't go hungry. We will definately return to the Merengue.
The animation team work hard and the shows are great. We especially enjoyed African night.

Seems a lot of you who were disapointed, when you make a complainte at the staff dont they correct the situation...are there some vendors that bothers you on the beach???
When they say mini-bar in the room does it mean its free???

If anyone as some advice it will be grately apriciated

Booked a last minute for the RIU Mambo to make up for a terrible vacation in Samana last year with Wyndham (avoid Wyndham in DR under all circumstances!!!!).

Despite some bad rain, RIU was excellent!!!! Really first class.

Service standards very high, friendly, competent multilingual staff. Very clean and well maintained. Food more than acceptable. Ability to use any of the 3 RIU hotels a definite plus. Always enough beach chairs, towels etc. No need to rush down in the morning to claim possession of a chair. Nice location with three hotels in their own bay. So not overly commercial. No one bothers you on the beach. Very secure.

Excellent experience. Would go again particularly at the exceptional last minute price - $1200 for 2 of us with all taxes and everything included!!!!!!
