Have to say this is one of the worst holidays we have ever had.. having been to this complex five times of which we have stayed at all three hotels and decided to go back to the Mambo. Apart from the weather being terrible ( two days sunshine in two weeks everything else was a sham ... after three days there with our friends we compalined about the food qualitiy ie the Al A Carte restaurant was shut, the buffet restauarnt of a lunch time was shut so your only option was the snack bar like others have said it was mainly burgers, hotdogs, pizza and chips although you could use the restaurants in the other two hotels which we did most days but that is not the point we had paid to go to the Mambo.... evening enterainment was ok there was a couple of realy good shows ie : Micheal Jackson and the Arican night , beach party was also ok although the first time it was cancelled due to the rain !!!! we also found outthta the Mamobo was due to be closed hence the lack of facilities and Thomsons were movng alot of people to the Bachata hotel, however by week two the Bachata was full but Thomsons were still letting guests check into the Mambo despite the compalnts from existing guest, one eving in the restaurant a cockroach was climbing up a guests shirt in front of us, we also saw a couple of rats along the pathway .. all in all we would defnatly NOT go back to this complex and shall be compaling to Thomsons for the lack of communication regardng the hotels situation

we arrived at the mambo on the 21st may for 2 weeks, first impressions were very good, a quick ceck in and welcome drink, then your bags were brought to your room.

room: very clean and plenty of space for 2 adults, 2 double beds and ample wardrobe and drawer for your clothes. bathroom was fine to. if you left the maid a small tip she would make towel art for you everyday which i thought was a lovely touch.

food: im a fussy eater and was most worried about the food, how ever i always found something to eat and never got bored with the choice, as it was different themes each night. also if you tip your waiter the following night he would make you a special table with flowers on it, also a lovey touch.

staff: the staff here were the friendlyist i have ever met, when you arrive at the hotel they give you a call to make sure that everything is ok, our air con wasnt working and we also wanted extra pillows( they were delivered in 10 min and air con fixed shortly afterwords). nothing was a problem for them and they would do anything to makeyour stay here more enjoyable.

entertainment: the entertainment was good especially as you have the choice of 3 hotels to choose from,so if you dont fancy the one at the mambo you can just walk to the next hotel and watch what is on there. also if you wished there was lots to do during the day, darts, yoga on the beach, vollyball and lots more!

drink: i dont know what the people on here were drinking that said they couldnt get drunk as the drink was very big measures and the even have smirnoff vodka but you need to ask for it. if you do want to get drunk ask for a special and it will be no problem. my husband did say that the beer was not very strong, but they give you bottle beers in you fridge in you room so you can just drink them.

excrursions: there was 16 of us in our group so we did a lot of trips, the best ones were swimming with dolphins, white water rafting, dune buggys, horde riding and the jungle safari. all the trips were excellent value for money.

there were a few complaints for other travellers because the hotel was shutting for renivations after this season, but i feel these were just serail moaners, eg a lady complained that birds were flying into the restaraunt( they have big open windows as it is so hot), another was that there was not a coffee machine available untill breakfast opened ant 7. if you could not wait till then you could walk along to the bachatta and get a coffee there, agian not a major problem.
part of our group were staying at the bachatta and the few occasions we ate there i thought the food was better at the mambo( so did they when the ate at the mambo). all 3 hotel are much the same tho but i would go back to the mabo first as the hotel did not disapiont me.

Just returned with my family from 2 weeks in the Merengue and we all had a great time. The hotel is excellent, spacious and I can't begin to get accross how helpfull, cheerfull and polite the staff are. Having been on about 6 previous all-inclusive holidays, I know the food is generally the most frequent complaint, but here the food was the best all-inc food we have had, with a large selection of dishes, and most tasted very nice, with a selection of about 8 soft drinks and tea and coffee constantly available. The bars are open constantly serving local larger and all the usual large selection of spirits, unusually including branded drinks, if you ask for them by name, although all drinks are served in vending machine style plastic cups until around 6pm when glasses are brought out.
Reading other reviews, many people had a problem with the locals coming in at the weekend and theft from rooms, well we had no such problems with locals at the weekend and didn't see any significant increase in numbers around the hotel, and since unpacking we don't seem to be missing anything either, although we did pay $42 for a room safe which is too small to keep larger valuable items.
Only a few negatives were the pool was dirty to the point that I used it less than usual, keeping my head above water, unfortunately the kids were not as cautious and one of them got and ear infection, and we got a $160 doctors bill, so we keep them out of the pool for the last 5 days. The rooms were spacious and clean, but there was a constant faint smell coming, I suspect, from the matresses, which looked about 20 yrs old and need replacing, also we had a couple of puddles from a leaking ceiling which were sorted promptly but still inconvenient. The room is described as having TV, which it does, but apart from one news channel all the other channels were in spanish, and had no scart socket for DVD etc, so was never used. The $120 charged for us to get in and out the country left a bitter taste.
Overall though, we all had a great time, made some excellent memorys, some lovely friends and would certainly consider Riu Merengue when booking future holidays.

We started our trip on the 16th May staying at the Riu Mambo. On the 19th we received a letter through the door at 9.20 in the evening asking us to report to our representative as soon as possible. On going to reception surprise surprise the rep was not there. I was very stressed at the letter thinking that initially something was wrong at home.

The next morning the rep decided to turn up at 8.30 after being phoned and told there was a problem. We were told the hotel would be closing and we were being moved to the Batacha. This again was quite distressing as we had booked the Mambo. On going to see a room at the other hotel we went to see the rep and told him we would move. He then turned and said the hotel was not closing and no services were being reduced.

On going to the bar that evening surprise surprise one of the bars had closed.

The food was absolutely terrible with very little choice. You will be okay if you like pizza and chips. There was carrots and roast potatoes for breakfast. The same can be said for the so called al la carte restaurant . The food was also poor here.

The water was off most days and on taking a shower the morning of leaving I was all lathered up and the water went off.

The beach was okay but you cannot really swim in the sea for the rocks and the coral.

Very very poor. Since returning I have had diarrohea for three days solid and had to go the walk in centre this evening to be told I had an infection.

Complaint has now gone in to Thomsons we'll wait and see what response we get.

We stayed for 2 weeks, the hotel and resort was lovely, clean, great staff. We have been to the DR before but to Samana. This hotel wasnt a patch on last years. The rooms were dated, and had a funny smell, the good was standard, lots of people were complaining about the food, epecially people that have been there before. The pool snack bar only opened for the last 2 days of our holiday. The pool was closed one day for cleaning and cutting trees. One of the other pools in the other hotel was drained for a few days, which made the others pools busy. There was far too many beds by the pool, they should shack the ones not being used. The mattress were very old and some torn. We did have a good time, but I wouldnt return back to this hotel. I couldnt connect to the free wifi on my ipad, but i could if we went to one of the other hotels. I cant comment on the entertainment as we didnt watch any.
