“amazing stay at IBEROSTAR”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2012

We stayed from 6th Dec to 20th Dec and have to say that our stay was truly amazing. Beautiful resort with a pool beside our room and the beach a couple of minutes walk!
Beach party at night, Salsa and Bachata dancing...very romantic.

Food was good, variety, but I stuck to the the safe foods; pasta, rice etc.

Staff very friendly and Animation team GG, Conny, Pepsi, Santos were great. We really felt part of their family. Shows/entertainment was varied and we never saw the same things twice.

Kids club kept my son entertained!

Would definitely visit again.

Thank you Iberostar for a memorable holiday

Room Tip: Ground floor if travelling with kids

Just came back from there last week this was my third time in this resort. Never going back, first of all the food is lower quality. The entertainment staff sucks now, they fired cappuccino who was the friendliest staff member and really made the resort fun. The pool has a weird green color.
I was really disappointed by the new changes.

Great hotel overall. The food is good, beach is beautiful, and the rooms are okay. But the best thing is the quality of service. Employees go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable and relaxing. They are friendly and helpful.
The room looked a bit dated but very clean. Maid service was also excellent. Hotel grounds are beautiful and clean.
We are a young couple and we felt the entertainment wasn't intended for us but I think you should expect this in Puerto Plata in general. Having said that, there were some funny shows on some nights and the entertainment staff really tried their best.
Food at the buffet was awesome. We tried the a la carte restaurants too but we felt the buffet was still the best.
Overall, we'll definitely stay at the Iberostar Costa Dorada if we're back in Puerto Plata.

Stayed from Dec 8 to Dec 15,2012. The experience was wonderful. Resort and rooms were clean, spotless and comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and truly interested to make sure that you were having a good time.
The entertainment team- Eddie Murphy, G G, D D, and Pesicola really went out of their way to provide a fun time for everyone - whether it was at the beach, the scheduled activities or with the pre-show activities. "The animation team was very very good". However, you can do as much (with the activity schedule provided) or as little as you want. One thing that I really enjoyed was the adequate pool and beach umbrellas that provided shade to be able to thoroughly enjoy the breeze and sound of the surf and relax without being roasted by the sun.
One thing that impressed me was that the room was prepared with a birthday cake and a decorative table setting for two on my wife's birthday on 12-12-12. I was surprised because I did not prearrange this with anyone. This just shows that the staff really goes the extra mile for their guests.
The food was excellent. There was good variety at each meal, meat, fish etc. The taste and quality of the food was great. You had a choice of the buffet (which we preferred) or themed restaurants which were also extremely enjoyable.
One aspect that surprised us was the quality of the shows. We really looked forward to seeing the shows and made sure not to miss them. Also the typical latin music and dancing that followed the shows was something that we thoroughly enjoyed every evening.
We are definitely planning on going back and this time with the entire family of eleven.

Yes, my family and myself had fun because there are a variety of activities to do. The staff made us feel welcomed and included anyone who wanted to participate in the activities. It felt like one big happy family and the variety of food is fresh and delicioius. With the laid-back atmosphere I was able to relax. Thank you Iberostar for a great time.

We did our usual internet research before we decided on Iberostar Costa Dorada. It appeared to us as a good value package since it had been well reviewed by several recent visitors and rated second highest of all resorts in Puerto Plata. While we can't say it disappointed us, it failed to live up to our expectations after all we had read about it in the various travel sites available on line. Perhaps, it was the weather that on a few occasions was a little less than ideal (it rained a few times) that made us feel a little short changed. Rain, however, is to be expected during this time of the year.

So, here it goes:

Upon our arrival we were checked in with our bracelet and a room exactly as requested - high floor, pool view, king size bed - in about 15 minutes time. This if fairly good but then again we were only the second couple out of 6 or 7 others that arrived in the same shuttle.

The rooms were also a good size and fitted with pretty much all one would regularly find in a mid-range hotel. They all have a terrace if on the ground floors or a balcony if on the second or 3rd floor. All rooms are very spacious, the beds are comfortable and linens clean and pressed. The built in closet contained a safe with a modern digital lock as well as an iron and board.
The small fridge was regularly re-stocked with bottled water, soft drinks and, Brahma beer, a much better choice to their local on tap kind.

Our room had what appeared to be a late model 32 inch LCD TV but the satellite service was rather poor quality. Most channels (only 13 by the way and channels 1 & 2 were "Iberostar" channels promoting their own chain and services) came through with a lot of static and it would cut out completely when the skies became a little too overcast.

The AC was another item that is carefully controlled by the resort. It worked relatively well but it did not have a thermostat, it had a switch on the bed's headboard that turned its fan on to a low or high setting. At times even the low setting felt too cold prompting us to simply turn it off only to wake up in the middle of the night to turn it back on because the room warmed up again. Maybe it was our 3rd floor room but the humidity levels seemed to fluctuate a lot over night.

The whole resort has good wireless internet coverage which as I was told by another guest, offers reasonably good speeds. However, Internet access is an extra cost service that was really unfairly priced ($5 / 30 minutes, or $10/2 hrs $20 for a day. We would have liked to perhaps review emails or even update our Facebook accounts during the rainy days but at these rates very few guests used the wireless features on their laptops or tablets.

The pool is very nicely laid out but not that inviting for some reason (maybe because it lacks a swim up bar). There were plenty of lounge chairs available around the pool but we found the staff would quickly collect their cushions and put them away if there was a hint of rain by mid afternoon (and we're talking about water proof nylon cushions - they don't go bad if they get wet). The staff would not ask you to give up the cushions you were using but by collecting those around you, others would be discouraged from coming around and we would soon decide to leave after that. Perhaps I'm being a bit of a cynic in my interpretation of what most will argue may be mere efficiency on the part of the staff but this kind of felt like subliminal conditioning to get us to move on out of the area...

The beach was also a bit of a let down. Although the temperature of the water was reasonably inviting, very few people could be seen bathing in it. The edge drops off quickly and one gets neck deep in the water when less than 30 feet in. There was a fair amount of visible debris and algae floating in the water and on the beach itself which was not raked regularly as I have seen it done in other resorts (and this in not a long beach front to maintain either).

We also did not appreciate their turning off all the lights around 11:45 pm. They have a "Disco" that closes at 2AM and several guests would welcome sitting out under the stars in some of the various common areas late into the night chatting, smoking, playing cards, etc. (That's what vacationers do when vacationing!) However, by 11:45 PM, the lights in these common areas go out - this includes the stairways, corridors and the lights on all rooms' balconies. One must then find one's way back to his/her room in near complete darkness. Make sure you bring a flashlight or install a torch app on your cell phone if you plan on being up and about after hours. According to a guest I spoke with, it seems that electricity is a limited commodity in Puerto Plata and most resorts depend on diesel generators for their electricity. Although I can't say I ever heard one running nearby, this may well have been the reason behind the tight control of the lighting around the resort.

Another disappointment was the fact their cocktails (ie a Margaritas) were prepared with Cool-aid like fountain drinks instead of real fruit juices (or at least from concentrate) that one would expect to be plentiful in tropical climates such as these. The one exception though is their pina- coladas which appeared to contain real pineapple juice (and at least a very convincing hint of coconut juice). Also, although they have most distilled spirits available, they're the locally produced varieties that do not compare to the better known brands. I enjoy black russians (3 parts vodka, 2 parts coffee liqueur) but what I got at both the main lounge or the bar by the beach tasted more like a cheap bourbon diluted with vodka - a mostly clear liquid with not a hint of coffee taste.

The meals were well prepared and there was a good variety to choose from, regardless of the location where you choose to eat. The "a la carte" restaurants are also efficient and will serve you fairly quickly once you get seated. However, while they're "Themed" restaurants, the "a la carte" choices were limited to only a few choices and you would still start your meal by selecting your salads and appetizers from the usual buffet choices.

Speaking of overall dining experience, they'll serve you a choice of house wine or beer but in fairly small glasses. The reason for this became clear very soon after we arrived. All waiters will endeavor to become your best friend in hopes you tip them on a regular basis. The "Hello amigos" and extending hand shakes, high fives and pats on the back become part of your dining experience, and, quite frankly, very annoying before very long. This behavior is also exhibited by the cooks manning some of the serving areas and of course, by all the bartenders. No one presses you into tipping and they do not serve you any worse if you don't tip them on a regular basis though. However, it would be nice to be able to enjoy your meal and a conversation with my spouse without having them come around every 3 minutes to top up the glass of wine you emptied with 3 small sips, ask you how you're enjoying the meal, the resort, etc. While they are all very friendly, we found it rather intrusive at times. We understand they need to supplement their low paying positions with gratuities, however, when in an all inclusive resort, tipping for all meals and drinks can add considerably to the cost of a package that is already higher priced because it is "all inclusive". In my opinion, Iberostar should adopt a policy similar to that of many other resorts that will charge you a nominal amount to cover for tips (ie $30 per guest per week). This should then be divided up not only to the waiters and bartenders but also to the many other supporting staff (ie grounds keepers, chambermaids, etc) who also contribute to our experience. Interestingly enough though, the female attendants on the other hand, were pleasant enough but not as "friendly" as their male counterparts, leaving us be but being helpful and attentive when requested.

Although we had an OK experience overall, I can't help but compare this resort's pros and cons with those of other resorts I have visited in the Caribbean in the past. Overall I would rate this as a 3 star resort but will add that it has the potential to become a 4 star resort if most of these "annoyances" are addressed by revisiting their processes and implementing a few simple changes as well as updating some of the dated items I noted in my observations.

Room Tip: Pool or ocean view rooms should provide with you a reasonably nice views. The "garden" vi...

We stayed at this resort from Dec. 1 - Dec. 8th. with our 12-year-old son. We travel a lot and found the entire experience at this reosrt to be very personal and memorable. Food was great, ambience was pleasing, staff were friendly (special thanks to Francisco & Adrienna at the reception, DD, GG, Pepsi and Maria from the entertainment team, several service staff at the buffet), well kept beach and activities to keep you occupied. We will definitely return to this place in the near future.

The only constructive feedback that we would like to give is about some elements of the entertainment shows; considering this resort is being advertised as family friendly we would have liked to see that the shows were staged to be appropriate for children. Most of the shows were very professionally done and high in quality. But, we found some of the sketches conducted by the entertainment team were not appropriate for children; they were a bit vulgar and over the top. We sincerely hope that the management would consider this as a constructive feedback.
