“A great retreat for 1000$ and under!”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

We travelled to the DR Feb. 12-19th. The VH held up to all of our expectations. Staff was friendly and helpful, the resort was well maintained and the location was ideal. Best part about this resort: the beach!!! Beautiful and stretches for miles. You will get approached by locals the first few days however a simple "no, gracias" will send them on their way. We never found it troublesome.

The rooms were adequate. Everything you need, but typical resort rooms. Slightly dated. The beds are a little hard but not uncomfortable. Be aware there are only a few king sized beds on this resort. In retrospect I might have written a quick email the week before traveling to confirm my reservation and reiterate my want of a king size bed. They did have one for us the day after we arrived however, it was located by the quiet pool, which is quite segregated from the rest of the resort. Being a younger couple we preferred to be "closer to the action", so we kept the 2 dbl beds.

Food was good. Nothing to write home about but there is lots of variety, and as a vegetarian I had no trouble finding something to eat. We did 2 a la cartes (Octopus and Italian). We found the Italian the better of the two. We were told the Ocean Grill was fantastic by multiple people.

We spent two days off the resort (coming back each night) doing some scuba diving in Sosua. Highly recommended! Beware that a cab ride to Sosua (~20 mins) will run you 60$. This includes both ways and the cab will wait for you while you complete your excursion.

The entertainment is sub-par however, we don't travel to a resort based on their entertainment reviews. We were aware it was just ok.

All in all, having travelled to various countries throughout the Carribean this resort is perfect for a week long getaway. It is not a luxurious resort but has everything you need for a week of rest and relaxation.

My sister and I stayed here February 10-15, 2013. Our first room in the Saona building was not to our liking at all. We aren't picky and knew we wouldn't be spending much time there other than to sleep, but it was dark and musty smelling. The staff at the front desk (Kerin) was very accomodating and we got a room in the back Beata building. Our room here was bright, clean, and well ventilated. We loved it! This building also has its own pool and bar and is a short walk to the main lobby. We got to the hotel a little early and went to the buffet for a snack while we were waiting for our room. Another kind staff member, Miguel, saw our luggage and invited us to the Ocean Grill restaurant that evening even though we didn't have reservations there. We took him up on his offer and had a nice dinner. Miguel, and Kerin were very kind and pleasant throughout our stay and always provided excellent service.
The grounds and public areas of this resort are very well kept and beautiful. The pools were very clean and well maintained.
I honest to goodness can't see how anyone can complain about the food here, especially the buffet. Not only was there great variety in the food offered, but it was also very good quality and tasted well. We loved the omelette and smoothie bar for breakfast, and the lunch and dinner buffets at various times had things like carving stations, international cheese bar, tapas bar, among other things. They ask you to sanitize your hands before entering the buffet which I was impressed with. There are 5 bars and you never had to walk far for a drink. A lot of people brought their own larger cups and mugs which is a great idea since the plastic drink cups are small. It also cuts down on waste as I saw no evidence of recycling at all in the Dominican Republic. All the bar staff were always pleasant and attentive and we had no complaints about the drinks.
The beach is beautiful and we never had trouble finding a lounger. It is lined with shady trees so you can always choose between the bright sun and the shade. As others have mentioned, the biggest downfall to the beach are the numerous vendors, though I did get my hair braided and my sister got a massage 2 days in a row by a lady who did a very good job. Other than that, if you just said "No thank you" or covered your face, they would usually leave you alone.
All in all, it was the wonderful staff and the great food that made this resort a place I would definitely return to.

On arrival to the hotel, we checked in and went to out allocated room, where we quickly found out, the air conditioning didn't work, not that i planned on spending much time in the room but I can't sleep in the heat. We went to reception who said they would send up maintenance, who would be with us within an hour. Unfortunately maintenance did not arrive so we went down to remind reception, after waiting another hour, we went down to the front desk and asked to be moved rooms, which they did accommodate. The room was lovely and very clean, and the facilities were good. The rest of the hotel was lovely, the pools; were well kept, the beach had good security, immediately behind the hotel, though I would not recommend walking to far down without a local guide! The buffet style meals and the alternative restaurants were fantastic and the food was of a very high quality. I would definitely recommend the omelette bar! This was all unfortunately spoilt over the weekends as local are let in for a significantly reduced price, meaning number at the hotel become very high, to boost the numbers during low season. something we had not been told in advance of booking. Quite frankly we were horrified, the people were friendly enough, but the hotel became extremely lapse on their rules, food at the buffets was gone within seconds, there was no order, we were made to sit in a separate, significantly smaller part of the restaurant, could not get service at the bars and unfortunately within this time a few guests had things stolen. Putting people constantly on edge and ruining what could of been a lovely tranquil trip.

This resort was by far the worst all inclusive we have ever booked. The room was musty smelling, the curtains had mold on them, and the bedsheets were like sandpaper. Almost no view (except that of our immediate neighbors' balconies). TERRIBLE food even at the restaurants. The buffet has essentially the same food day after day. Low end alcohol, poor service. The upside is their beautiful beach--unfortunately filled with vendors selling everything from belts to aprons. Would not go back.

Had the good fortune of spending a week with friends at the Gran Ventana in Puerto Plata this month. What a lovely time. The Resort is laid out so you don't have to walk a mile to get from one amenity to the next. We never had to reserve or fight for loungers on the beach which offers both sun and shade. The beach grill was a favorite for lunch. Best burgers, must be the hot sauce. Had a wonderful steak dinner there one of the evenings as well. The staff at the Gran Ventana are what makes your stay so special . Lovely, friendly, happy, courteous. Always a smile and an ola. The Buffet waiters are fun and go out of thier way to make sure you have all you need for an enjoyable meal. Thank you, Denny, Excellente. Great bartenders as well. If you have the opportunity to go make sure you ask for a "Latin Lover" at the Lobby Bar. My favorite before dinner martini. Thanks for a great week in the sun. Fabulous weather.

Room Tip: You need to like a firm bed as these ones were certainly that.

My husband and my son stayed there in September 2005 2006 and 2007 We loved this resort and we have great memories of this hotel I felt compelled to write this because Glyness N had slated Jackie at the quiet pool Jackie was the reason we went back for 3 years in a row She is great fun and my son loved her . When we were there we met a load of repeat guests and they all loved Jackiexxx Now for the rest of the review The rooms are a little dated . The food is ok and the A La Carte restaurants have good menus The animation team work hard and the shows are ok depending on audience participation Only reason that I wouldn't go back is that I have been there 3 times and there is a big world to explore However I would go back just one more time just to see Jackie
