“Interesting Museum”

This museum is very small and is quite hard to find. There is lots of Amber on display with all kinds of creatures in it. They also have a good display of Larimar in the boutique for sale.

“museum?!”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

i went to an amber/ larimar 'museum' in Puerto Plata. What a joke. one room divided up, all dark, a couple of showcases.....not to be pompous but they were unprofessional and not to friendly when you didn't make a purchase.
I did....cigars!....rip off...... and couldn't be given change in American $...they bunch sitting around had to go through their purses to find pesos (which i didn't want) and even then were short!
A total waste of time. Plus the visit ruined me for the rest of my shopping day.

“Interesting museum”
Reviewed February 2, 2014 via mobile

We went to the Amber Museum with our City Tour excursion. It was very interesting. A guide will walk you through the museum explaining everything you would want to know about amber and larimar and how to tell if the stones are real or fake - this is good if you plan on buying any stones.

It's pretty interesting and cool to see the fossils in the amber.

At the end of the tour you're brought to a store that sells jewellery, local crafts, Mama Juana and cigars. We didn't buy anything and the staff weren't pushy compared to other vendors.

“More of a jewelry store than a museum”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

Although this is billed as a museum, it felt like one more opportunity for them to get you to buy their jewelry. I will admit it is interesting to see this fossilized tree resin and the things that are inside it (like mosquitoes).

“Definitely worth stopping by!”

I'm a big fan of amber and really didn't know a lot about it. Can you fake it well enough to look exactly like the real thing? Turns out you pretty much can. There are a bunch of colors, types and things to look for (floating in salt water) that will help. Really a fun little spot and of course it will try to sell you every touristy trinket that you can also buy on the beach. I found it informative and interesting.
