“Disappointed”

The signs that told how the amber is mined were okay but I definitely got the feeling that they couldn't wait to get you out of their little "hall" of a museum and into the gift shop where they really want your attention!

“Expensive Amber Jewlery”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The museum is very small. Their claim to fame is that Steven Spielberg came there when he was developing the story line for Jurassic Park. It's 100 Dominican pesos to get in and the tour guide wants you to tip him. But the real draw for the museum is shopping downstairs. All the jewelry is very expensive. Save your money and find a local silversmith and pay half the price for something that is truly custom. I found a GREAT silversmith in Sosua who has exquisite jewelry that is half the price. Patrick's Silversmith close to the Playa Sosua. Don't get taken to the cleaners by any of the museum shops.

“DO NOT PAY FOR THIS!! CITY TOUR IS A SCAM”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

You should not have to pay for this excursion other than gas or the taxi ride. The museum is free and the information is translated to English. It's very tiny and all you'll see is larimar and amber. It's sort of neat how the museum is set up like you're going into a mining cave and if you're into rocks, it may be worth checking out, otherwise, don't waste your time. The museum is connected to a small cigar shop with a man rolling cigars from banana leaves and a jewelry shop that makes jewelry from the larimar and amber. By the way, the jewelry store will pounce at your wallet if they smell weakness. The city tour that takes you into Puerto Plata will charge you $40+ to see something that's free and above all, they use it as a way to pimp you out to the overpriced shops and restaurants so they get their kickback.
