I must admit that before we knew what we would be missing, my friends and I almost skipped out on our reservation in pursuit of accommodations more central to Puerta Plata. I hate to think of what we would have missed had we not change our minds. Staying at TPV is the most special experience you could possibly have when visiting the Dominican Republic. The setting is beautifully rustic with a breathtaking vista that is a worthy way to spend one's time in and of itself. Guests of TPV stay in cabin/tent hybrids made of local materials. The beds are amazingly comfortable and you even have electricity. Showers, sinks and bathrooms are separate much like you would find at summer camp (but much nicer). One bath house allows you to gaze out towards the amazing Dominican country side and coast as you use any of these facilities.

The owner, Tim Hall is an exceptional man whose unique and generous spirit warms a room. He has filled TPV with an eccentric and hospitable character and his prices are beyond reasonable. The fact that he is Canadian was a boon to us because he knew the types of excursions that would accent our trip perfectly. We took all of his suggestions and had the time of our lives.

If you want an authentic experience in the Dominican Republic that will stand out and make your smile every time you reminisce, book a room at the Tubagua Plantation Village right away and I promise you will never regret it.

I’m a single female traveller from England who found the safety and security of Tubauga Plantation resort a comfort after the hustle and bustle of Santo Domingo.
The location was second to none with stunning views over the valley and the city and beaches of Puerto Plata.
From cascading waterfalls to the rolling hills and mountains the view was peaceful and calming. I slept under the stars covered by a mosquito net.
Each morning I woke up to the sound of crowing cockerels greeting the coming dawn. The soft stanzas of classical music floated out of the room of a fellow traveller.
The Dominican people whom I lived with were welcoming and I never felt taken advantage of or that I was in danger.
Tim and his family were genteel, helpful and professional at all times. The beauty of his children and the lovely purring welcome of cats reminded me of home.
The pricing was customised for me and my exact situation and the website provided a guideline but as Tim says, “Leave the exact planning till you get there.” I did this and experienced things I never would have if I had planned every minute from an all inclusive resort.
The highlight of my trip to Tubagua was climbing up into the mountains with Dave, a PhD in Economic Sustainability, who taught me to respect the land which I was seeing. We walked as a foursome into 3 cascading waterfalls and despite bumps and bruises it was one of the most beautiful hikes of my life.
The local area was easy to access with a short car ride down a beautiful, bumpy mountain round got me into the bustling centre of Puerto Plata. I had local guides to accompany me with Tim’s cook, Jacqueline, to show me to the nearest Nail Salon for my treats and her daughter to giggle, run and play with me at the Malecon. And a local man to drive me in the mountains and accompany me out dancing bachata with Jacqueline and Dave.
I would heartly recommend Tubagua to any single female or male traveller who is looking for cultural immersion as well as safety, security and tranquillity under the warm sun in the Dominican Republic.
I know Tim also welcomes groups and this location would be stunning for Yoga retreats or those wanting to escape and give back to the world we live in.
Thanks Tim and Family. Gracias todos!

Tubagua was recommended to us by a friend in Santiago, and they really hit the nail on the head! This is not an experience for just anyone, however - but for the right kind of traveler, this retreat is truly wonderful!

The host (and owner), Tim, was both friendly and helpful. We arrived in Puerto Plata by bus, and he helped arrange transportation to the lodge for us. The views from the lodge were amazing - we were perhaps 1000 feet above the coast. The accomodations are rustic, with open-windowed thatch-roofed huts containing beds covered with mosquito netting. There was no air conditioning, but the cool mountain breeze kept us quite comfortable. For a very reasonable additional cost, Tim provided us with an absolutely exquisite dinner (Grilled Mero in a Passion Fruit sauce). We provided our own wine, and it made for a very romantic evening.

There is plenty of hiking to do on the small roads that surround the lodge, and the local people are all very friendly and helpful. Tim is also more than happy to help arrange local trips, and offered several suggestions for travel in other parts of the Dominican Republic. Our one suggestion would be that it is best to have your own transportation. Public transportation was hard to come by, and easy access to travel options to and from the lodge was the only reason we left (we had no car).

If you don't mind simple accomodations, or are traveling with a large group and want someplace truly exotic to stay, this is a great place to make some memories.

TIm was an excellent host, the retreat is beautiful, well kept and rustic. I loved the experience of staying there. The road is beautiful for early morning walks. My friends and I went to 27 Charcos and Tim knows of some others for swimming. It was great and I can't wait to go back. The view is incredible.
