“The coolest hotel I've ever stayed at!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2012

This hotel is in the heart of the Colonial District in Santo Domingo and the ambience was perfect. We stayed here one night when we flew into town on our way to a beach resort. It had so much personality. When you come off the street there is a huge locked wooden door on a tall wall. It feels like you are entering a secret castle. The entry rooms are picturesque and so well decorated that you feel like you stepped back in time. The bedrooms are "in back" on a open-air courtyard. Very tall ceilings make the rooms feel bigger than they are and they are well-shielded from the noise of the street. Comfortable beds and nice little breakfast in the morning. I couldn't stop looking around and taking in the details. We felt priveledged to see a place as cool as this, let alone stay there.

I came here after a warm recommendation from a friend and loved the peaceful atmosphere, the beauty of the convent and the serenity. I read other reviews here before I visited and assumed they were over-enthusiastic but now I am just as enthusiastic myself! Good location too from the main sites in Zona Colonial but the best bit is the building and rooms.

The staff were also great when I was there- they went several extra miles to help me sort out a couple of problems I had with my trip and were really polite and friendly. They reply fast to emails too.

I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Santo Domingo now and I recommend you to do the same.

I have stayed at the Beaterio at least 5 times over the past two years. Each time has been excellent. This is truly my home away from home in Santo Domingo. A hidden gem. The hotel is convenient to El Conde and is right on Parque Duarte. There's a little bodega right next door.

The service at the hotel is outstanding. The complimentary breakfast: fresh juice, coffee, toast, homemade marmelade, and fresh fruit is outstanding. I could site in the main salon and read all day and listen to the sounds of the street. The upstairs patio is a great place to watch the sun set over Parque Duarte and have a drink. The hotel is full of little nooks and cranies that are just lovely to sit.

The rooms are terrific. It's like going back in time. Which is to probably say that the TVs and A/C could use some updating. This hotel is French owned and the staff speaks both French/Creole and Spanish. The price is terrific for the value. The hotel is safe and secure. I will be back again and again.

This restored convent is loaded with architectural interest, colonial charm and interesting antiquities. The rooms are spacious and adequately furnished. If visiting the colonial zone is your desire - it was certainly ours - this is a great location to wander the area. The staff are cordial; breakfast is adequate and the place is very clean.

Room Tip: If you have heavy bags, ask for a main floor room. Taxis from the airport cost US$40.

We loved the atmosphere, charm, and history of this place--it's 500 years old. Very centrally located in Zona Colonial. Decent breakfast too.

The location was not bad, with a shop next door where you can grab necessities like water, toothbrush, etc. The host was friendly and helpful. The rooms were cozy (stayed in room 7) and during the day and night, it's really quiet. The living room is beautiful decorated as well. I like the fact that it's walking distance to the main colonial attractions but, during the night, it's advisable to take a taxi back. From Atarzana, it's around USD$6 to get back to El Beaterio.

Room Tip: Chose rooms on the second level from 7 onwards but not 11.

very pretty old convent turned into a hotel. Staff was great. Very helpful. Rooms were neat. Courtyard was very pretty. Location is close to sites. Breakfast was small but adequate. Beds were comfortable. Very pretty and redone very well. Probably not the place for everyone but if you love old places with a lot of history you will love it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
XVIth century old convent, El Beaterio witnesses the history of Santo Domingo for almost 500 years. Faithfully restored in keeping with the original charm and architecture of its period, this quaint and private hotel offers its guests a unique atmosphere of the inimitable Dominican art de vivre. Nested in the heart of the colonial city, El Beaterio offers eleven coquettish and sober rooms, laid out around a flowery colonial interior patio. Between its stone walls, it’s a peace oasis in the middle of a vibrant and enlivened city. Established in 1530 with the beatas given the task of collecting girls of all ages, Spanish and mixed race, lost on Earth». You’ll find out what a beaterio is, and you’ll learn about the religious figures responsible for its foundation in Santo Domingo. You’ll discover two residents of El Beaterio, Sor Leonor de Ovando and Dona Elvira de Mendoza, first poets of the New World. Since 1990 when UNESCO declared the Colonial City of Santo Domingo as “World Heritage Site”, El Beaterio is classified as “building of documental, historic and architectural value”. In 2016, El Beaterio is officially recognized as Dominican Republic’s first hotel-museum by the Ministry of Culture. ... more   less
