Built over centuries is a must stop and should be visited from a cultural and architectural perspective.

“Keep in mind that it is the first cathedral in the new world”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2014

This is the first Cathedral of the New World, so the building is modest in comparison to other churches in Latin-america. Nevertheless, it is the best attraction in Santo Domingo by far. I found it very interesting. I will recommend to make some restorations inside. The area is quite nice, the most beautiful area of Santo Domingo. Beware of your surroundings!. The souvenirs shops around are tourist traps, you get one price and a few meters you get a different price for the same item, so do not rush to buy things immediately. Take special precaution with your belongings.

“Cool History...Beautiful Cathedral”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

Inside the cathedral there are plaques that explain every chapel. You don't need to buy the audio tours, you can just read the plaques. They have the words in Spanish and in English. Be sure if you are going to go you wear pants (jeans are fine) or a skirt and a shirt with sleeves.

“A truly historic place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2014

This I believe is the oldest Cathedral in the Americas, so that makes it special. Compared to the cathedral of Europe, this Cathedral I would say is just modest, and unfortunately, not being preserved when you see the outside. It is fully one side of Columbus Park which you must go through on any visit through the Conde and old art of Santo Domingo.

The Cathedral is not open to visitors for many hours or even every day so you may be lucky to be allowed inside.

“Beautiful Cathederal”

The first Church of the Americas. Gothic and so much history. The DR people are doing a great job preserving this gorgeous church with its aches. Awsome.
