Hotel Conde de Penalba
Ranked #22 of 78 Hotels in Santo Domingo
Reviewed February 20, 2009

The key point of this hotel is its location. Everything that you want to see in the Zona Colonial is within easy walking distance of the hotel. I stayed in the hotel for two nights and while it wasn't fancy, it was clean, comfortable, and safe. The shower was great. There is a strong police presence in the area and security guard in the hotel at night. I normally travel with earplugs so noise was not a factor to me. However, I did not that the hustle and bustle outside really dies down around 11PM and things don't get moving in the neighborhood until around 8 AM. Anyone who has read any of my reviews knows that I prefer value over anything else and the Hotel Conde de Penalba delivers on this point.

The food in the restaurant was good and the coffee excellent. For those on a budget, I suggest a breakfast of coffee for 40 pesos and some of the meat pastries on the counter for 10 pesos each.

Spent a couple of nights here to wrap up our annual dive trip to DR. What a fantastic spot. Location could not be better since the hotel sits on one corner of Parque Colon within walking distance of all the sights in the Zona Colonial and at the end of one of the city's main shopping areas.

Downstairs restaurant spills onto the sidewalk and recommend eating breakfast looking out over the morning crowds. Prices reasonable. Did not eat supper since there are plenty of excellent restaurants within a five-minute stroll.

Staff helpful, rooms a little shabby but inexpensive (about $DR3000 per night for a couple). Room 302 and 402 are corner rooms with balcony overlooking the bustle of this area... can be noisy!

No elevator.

You can't beat the location. The Conde de Penalba sits smack on the Calle El Conde (the city's most famous shopping street) and overlooks the Parque Colon, home of the Columbus statue and the old cathedral (Catedral de Santa María la Menor). The park is a very pleasant place, filled day and night with strollers and old men relaxing.

In order to take best advantage of the location, the hotel's cafe spills out onto the street. I'm sure most of those wandering the Zona Colonia have at one point wandered past, and have perhaps had a meal at the cafe, but failed to notice the hotel. For reasons unknown, there is no sign for the hotel, and the check-in desk is on the building's second floor. If you don't know the hotel is there, you likely won't find it.

Most of the must-see sights of the Zona Colonia are within walking distance of the hotel, including the Colon house (Alcazar de Colon) and the ruins of the old monastery and hospital.

I admit it's a bit overpriced, particularly the cafe (us$4 for an El Presidente!), but I happily paid for the location and the ambience. The rooms are all air-conditioned, a pleasant relief in Santo Domingo, which is hot and noisy. The rooms are old-fashioned, perhaps a bit worn, but we found that charming. Be sure to ask for room 302 or 402 -- both have a balcony with a wonderful view of the old city. The hotel's staff is very cordial and professional, and they went out of their way to make us feel at home.

My only complaint concerns an event that took place in the cafe one evening as two businessmen successfully soliticed the services of two professional escorts. This was witnessed by my wife, my 17 year old daughter and her 17 year old friend. Unfortunately, prostitution is rife in the Dominican Republic. You will likely witness the same at any hotel in the city.

Really nice, comfortable rooms, there is a balcony outside that you can enjoy. The hotel has a restaurant downstairs and also a bar. You can eat outside or inside. The food was good. There are shops across the street that you can go to. Went to a wedding over there. This is the place that was recommended from the people who lived in Santo Domingo. If anyone needs information the phone number is ------------and the website is -----------.
