Read lots of previous reviews on this hotel some good, some bad, before we went. Having now been, it makes you wonder what this hotel has to do to please some people. There will always be things which don't please, but some people must have been exceptionally unlucky if our experience is anything to go from.
I could write a huge long review but to keep people's attention and to take a lot of subjectivity out of the report let's keep it reasonably short and concise.
We spent six nights in Occidental El Embajador in Santo Domingo. Occidental El Embajador is an older but well kept hotel. The Reception and guest relations service were excellent and very efficient (Mr. Pablo and Miss Patricia really make a difference). The staff was very friendly and always helpful. They were always willing to please. One day we didn’t receive towels, I phoned and after a little explaining we got the towels and never had any problems again. Our room was always cleaned well and the fridge well stocked. The people, was always smiling, always willing and always friendly. You tip, but the service deserved it.
The rooms on the 5th floor are very large; (5th and 6th floor are executive club, the 7th and 8th are the royal club), and we had the opportunity to see the lower levels (not so great) and the 7 and 8th floor which we might take next time. All three levels have a different ambience. The bed was a little firm, but comfortable. The bathroom had nice toiletries, and nice marble tiles. A/C was not so strong, but good enough. Room Service was absolutely fabulous.
Breakfast was great, Luis and Vladimir always attentive to make a nice omelet and Robert and Cesar checking that everything was ok at our table. Great guys! The internet facilities were very good (there was wireless all over the hotel).
The pool was great, pool towel service brilliant, towels always available from 7am and you could change towels as often as you needed. The staff in the pool area, especially Miguel and Diego, was always attentive to serve you.
All other services and areas were as you would expect from a good quality hotel. Surroundings were well maintained and the grounds very clean, neat and tidy. It was also good to see locals come in the evening and enjoy a drink at the piano-bar (live music).
Overall this hotel does not get 5 stars only because it shows some signs of age. I am sure there are more modern hotels in town with clean and new furniture and updated looks. However in my opinion it is the best way to get to know and understand the grandeur of the Dominican Republic in the 50's and 60's.
TIP: There were photos of various celebrities who have been clients of the Embajador Hotel over the years since, it’s grand opening in 1957. Photos of Rock Hudson, and King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia (the reigning monarch of Spain) as example.
