The relatively short 4 day visit to Santo Domingo , a combination of business and pleasure, was enhanced by our comfortable stay a the El Embajador. The property is centrally located but due to the large grounds and gardens feels somewhat private. Given the fact that the hotel was constructed some 60 years ago , it maintains some of that vintage charm, but is conveniently updated in the usual essential areas. They have accommodations of varying levels ,on designated floors, the higher up the greater the standard of accommodation. The food was prepared above average , there is a smoke free casino , and a large pool to enjoy.

The hotel is in a good shape and well located. HOwever, the front rooms are too noisy and not very clean, MOst of them are old with new carpets and renewed bathrooms. But you pay as new.
Pool area and fitness room are great!

If old-style is what you're looking for, the Embajador is the place. Built in grand style, was likely the top Hotel in the capital city of this country fifty years' ago. Plenty of vestigal charm with a lot going on. Very atmospheric. Could be used as a film set. There's a trade-off as the rooms and furnishings are dated. And, while you'll need to rely on cabs, there are restaurants and a nightlife spot just beyond the parking lot. If you don't want to go even that far, the hotel restaurant and bar is nice, and there are a few misbegotten ladies in the casino looking for dates.

RUN !!! Specially if you are here for business this place will be your nightmare ; I myself have to travel abroad for my job and this place is exactly what I hate.
In this hotel they give all privileges and attention to people who are not direct customers of the hotel, i.e. dominican individuals or local companies organising parties in their gardens .. and this is very often !!! such un-interesting persons as us, paying 120 dollars per night, are not worth they care about or consider.
Gardens are nice, breakfast is great, and the lobby is nice and clean.
And that's it. The rest of it is just awful.
The pool area is great ... when you may get access, since it may be closed for private parties ... but aren't we paying for the pool too ?
Rooms are SO OLD AND CRAPPY and SO DIRTY. Hygien standards are far from met. The fridge was so dirty I almost puked. The inside doors were covered with unidentified marks, and the main door handle had never been cleaned since at least 10 years. Marks on the walls too, bumps on the furniture, half devices do not work. Filthy bedspread !!! and sheets with hairs. And my personal favorite, they use the same brush to clean the toilet boil and seat ... yak !
But the top of the tops was THE NOISE ; coming from the colonial area (nice) at midnight we had to switch on TV cause the music was SO LOUD we could not sleep; and even then we could not hear the TV, can you believe that !! They played house and dance music SO LOUD until 1:15 a.m. for a party organised by a dominican company, and believe me, they just do not care at all if paying customers can not get to sleep. And when we called reception they were not even friendly, so forget about excuses.
Rooms are not soundproof. We heard the guy next door farting in his bed, and his air con all night long.
Ear pluggs and self-denial will be your best friends in this hotel.

Room Tip: Room with odd number and wing opposite from pool

As you drive in you are met by a delightful staff at the car and front desk. The hotel is extraordinary in terms of service and concern for their guests. The rooms are comfortable and everything is very clean. The hotel has a beautiful garden and offers good facilities such as the the great pool area, several restaurant options, coffee, the gym, Internet connectivity (free!), the business centre .. and all this at a very attractive price. We had a great time in the El Embajador Hotel. Dined in one of the hotel's restaurants several nights, which we enjoyed. Excellent service, high quality in all aspects of being a hotel with very high standard in hospitallity. May be they invented this here?

This hotel may have once been grand but that day was long ago. My biggest complaint lies with the rooms.

* cheap old mattress with a lot of bounce
* sad hold thrift-store furniture in the rooms
* insufficient in-room lighting
* old fuzzy small televisions in the rooms
* the hallways (4th floor) are musty smelling and dingy

Pluses are:
* nice pool
* good breakfast
* helpful staff

I would NOT stay here again. Definitely not a 4 start hotel.

We stayed at Occidental Hotel in Santo Domingo for a week while on a medical mission to the Dominican Republic. Our team of 50 health care providers were well attended to. Our rooms were alawys ready for us when we came back from the hospital, the hotel staff were very professional. We had arranged to have a group dinner at the hotel the night of our arrival. The room was wonderfully set up. The service and the food was fantastic. The hotel gave us the comfort and service we needed after a hard day of work

Room Tip: lower floors have better water pressure
