“Good quality hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2012

The room was very large and the bed was comfortable. There was some noise coming from the back of the hotel (casino side). Apparently the windows are not completely sound-proof. But I was able to drown out the noise with the AC. Also, I had to wait 5 minutes for the water in the shower to get hot. Not what I was expecting. Finally, check-in took longer than expected, about 15 minutes.

Just came back from a weeks stay here. The hotel is located away from the more popular Malecon area and is located in as others have said in a business area, close to government offices. Check-In was done on the 9th floor at the Club Premium since I had reserved a Master Suite Club Premium room. The room was ready in about 20 minutes after I arrived at 1pm. The room was on the 8th floor and is pretty much exactly as it is shown in the hotel pictures online. Living room area has a cream colored "leather" couch with a flat screen tv and then the bedroom area has a large king bed with a larger flat screen tv. These rooms also come with a computer. Bathroom had a double sink vanity and a large jacuzzi tub. The AC worked well, one control for the bedroom area and one for the living room area. Be warned it can be a little noisy since you can hear the traffic from outside. Club Premium lounge was nice. Had a decent breakfast in the mornings and in the evening had cheeses, breads, sweets and other finger foods. There is a frig that you could help yourself to water, sodas, beer and wine. There was also coffee maker etc. There was a large terrace with a jacuzzi outside the Club Premium area that also had a covered area where you could sit. Nice view of the city and you can see the ocean from there. On the 1st floor the pool area was nice. A bar area and also covered areas to sit in. I did not eat at Kyoto the Japanese restaurant but ate mainly at the other restaurant in the lobby. You can either have the buffet or order off the menu which is ok but a little limited. The buffet choices did not seem worth it for $650 pesos. Honestly really not anywhere to walk to for something to eat especially in the rain. Taxis are very expensive from the hotel so you may want to plan for this. There is public transportation but unless you have somewhat of an idea of where your going it could be difficult. Traffic in Santo Domingo can be awful. Now while the hotel was nice I was very disappointed in most of the employees. Not very helpful whatsoever. When I arrived at the hotel and went to the front desk to check-in the man working at the desk could not help and I had to wait for another person to come to help, only to be told I needed to go to the 9th floor for check-in. While the Club Premium was nice the employees working there did not seem the least bit interested in the guests. Housekeeping was good but we also left a tip everyday. I had a very early flight so I checked out of the hotel around 3:50 am and the guy at the front desk seemed clueless on how to check someone out. I stay at many Barcelo Hotels but this particular one as far as employees went was disappointing. As far as the hotel itself you would not be disappointed but the attitude of the employees may make you rethink your choice of staying here.

Room Tip: I would suggest a room on a high floor to lessen the noise from outside.

I've been in Barceló Santo Domingo from sunday to friday.
my room was on the 5th floor (be sure to ask for a smoke or smoke-free floor) on the casinó and swimming pool side. on sunday night there was the disco and it was quite loud, but I had no problems to fall asleep as I was tired from the flight.
the room was enough big and the same for the bathroom. the room was ok but the moquet looked old. the bathroom was perfect and comfty too.
the food on average is good, never top level but neither really bad. the eating area is next to the buffet, thus it is quite smelly.
the pool looked nice but I did not try it.
the gym was old and in poor condition, they really need to upgrade it.
all the staff was nice and helpful, I've been satisfied and I would recommend it.
a great bonus of this hotel is that it is nearby the metro: Santo Domingo's metro is top level both in quality, cleaness, safety.

Reasonable location for a "downtown hotel", close by car: ten minutes from the historic neighborhood, and five minutes from Washington Avenue (Malecon).
It's close to the US Embassy and Government Offices (Federal Reserve and IRS, for example), so attract business travelers.
Beware that locals like to party "in the street". Just in front of the hotel you'll have a liquor store with enormous woofers sounding "merengue", reaching its climax during Friday night.

The hotel staff tries to be attentive but not really helpful if you ask for the "extra mile"
The "B" restaurant is nice with a good offer for breakfast, but from May 30th to June 3rd it only offers soup and salad buffet for dinner, in addition to a hugely priced "menu"
They have a very nice pool but its access is infamous. They have a mad designer: in order to avoid traffic through the lobby, you have to go along the 1st floor cross all the rooms, make a right at an ice-dispenser to walk outside thirty-yards, arriving to a stair to walk down the equivalent of two-floors; then you arrive at the pool. Take into account that you need to go back later !!!
It could be just luck but during our last night there (June 6th, 10 pm) we receive a paper noticing that they will make "maintenance" on the elevators from 2 am to 5 am. As we plan to leave at 5 am I called the front desk and they assured me that there will be no dificulties but they didn't allow me to close our business in order to expedite the checkout.
We stand up at 4 am and there is no water (pumps were damaged during the night), and at 4:15 the lights went off. At 4:45 two gentlement came, one to check the minibar, the other to "carry" the luggage through the stairs. We have to wait until 5:05 am to check out because their systems were down, due to the lack of electricity (nothing compared to stay at the airport without air conditioning)
So it turns back to the title: even if we consider good infrastructure, people need services. Without them it does not woth the effort to visit there

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms directly located to the front. The traffic noise during the day (Dominicans like to...
