In the past, this was not a great place to walk, day or night. But Santo Domingo authorities have invested a great deal to clean the place up, even opening up a playground in an area once frequented only by the homeless. The biggest difficulty a visitor will find is crossing the George Washington Avenue in order to get to the Malecon. Traffic is always heavy and there are no crosswalks. Eventually, you have to wait until someone lets you cross or all traffic comes to a complete stop for no apparent reason (which happens quite often).

The Malecon of Santo Domingo is really beautiful. Of course, it would be nicer if those in charge would invest some more to keep it shinning. I can not complaint, because many times during my visits there, I go there for long walks, to relax, and to have fun as well. You can find there restaurants ( basically fast food Dominican or Mexican, mostly), live shows, bars, free washroom, and lots locals. The street is too busy, and it is hard to cross it, because they are really crazy on wheels (ahahaha)...Also you may find some people looking for people and of course is always safe to watch your personal belongings...It's frequeted also by street vendors and shoe shine people...
I love the place and it is one of my choices while in Santo Domingo...If you are too picky you will may complaint about the noise and the way some spots are over there. TRY IT!

Improvements have been made recently to some areas of the shore but I don't feel very safe in this area outside of my hotel.
