“Beware of rats!”

It's in a cave, that's what makes it different but the food is not great and on one ocasion we got a rat running down the walls. I have never visited again.

“Great experience when visiting Santo Domingo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

I have been to this restaurant on multiple occasions, but after a couple of years I returned for my husband's birthday while in Santo Domingo. We went on a Sunday and they had a "Sunday Buffet" which is an "all-you-can-eat" event at a fixed price. Visiting this restaurant is a nice experience since it is in a cave. It's mostly frequented by tourists, since it is considered a fancy restaurant for locals. The buffet area was small, so it can get very crowded with just a couple people. The food was amazing! I really enjoyed it. Various dishes, definitely not your typical North American Buffet. The ambiance was perfect, except for the dim lighting with black chairs... everybody seemed to be hitting them! I didn't order the wine, so I cannot review that. The staff was very attentive.

“Go for the happy hour and that's it!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2012

They called this "Tardes de Cócteles en Las Terrazas del Mesón!" Happy Hour from 5/8pm and a special cocktail at RD$90+taxes from 8p/12am. Avoid the wines, I don't know who is the buyer for the ceiling but this guy should be fired. They never have the wine you want! And for the food, this is the same cantine as for a cruise boat... But sometime, it comes something great but only sometime and so rarely. Very poor service, lots of local tigress.

“It is a restaurant for tourists”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2012

We were invited to El Meson De La Cava for dinner over the 4th of July weekend in the DR. I was a regular customer at this restaurant during my past life in the tourism business. It was and continuous to be an spectacular place to go, a different experience in ambiance, classy set up except when it comes to selecting wines and food.

We were a table of three requesting a bottle of wine wine, which finally became a number 4 choice, stock was very limited with all kind of excuses. Dinner was another story, two of three entrees were terrible, the third one was only acceptable.

In my opinion, it is worth visiting as a tourist attraction and with the understanding that they cater to the tourist industry. If you want to experience a different place, going down a cave, dining at a nice, beautiful, romantic setting and having the patience for a hit or miss dinner, it is for you, otherwise go someplace else.

Very nice place. Astonishing ambiance, since the place is like inside a Cave. Good food and careful service. Can recomend it, no questions asked!
