“Whale Watching”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

This attraction turned out to be a great experience as I often thought that I would have to go to far out places like Alaska to see whales up close and personal. We boarded the catamaran "Misers Dream" after a brief talk on the species of whales we were likely to encounter off shore. Just about an hour out a sperm whale and her calf was spotted. What an awesome experience as we were able to observe them for about fifteen minutes before they dived probably after suckling and the release of plenty whale poo. Two more whales were observed that afternoon and what a calming feeling surrounding their presence. This culminated a fantastic evening at sea.

“A most awesome afternoon out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

Whale Watching on the Miser’s Dream with Anchorage Whale Centre
We were promised an enjoyable afternoon out at sea on the Miser’s Dream by Andrew Amour (and his crew) that runs the Anchorage Whaling Centre and by Jove he didn’t disappoint. I would say it’s one of the most enjoyable and awesome experience of my adult life seeing sperm and pilot whales on this trip. And all this took place 3-5 miles out at sea just outside Roseau Dominica.
We were forewarned to turn up ½ an hour briefing before we set off at 14.00 hrs. Before our briefing we were asked to sign a liability disclaimer and whether there was indemnity cover no one was prepared to say, but the feeling is if one didn’t sign one would not be part of the pre-briefing and the whale watch trip. Nonetheless, a security badge was given after we sign and found this reassuring and encouraging. We boarded the Miser’s Dream following our well informed briefing on the sperm whale.
On board we were given a safety briefing and some information about how the sperm whale is tracked. We were about a mile out and the staff began to work their magic with their hydrophone equipment that gives them a click or echo location. The first hydrophone was done with a 15 metre length cable 2 miles or ½ hour out from land. More hydrophone out one hour out, but despite heavy rain and a choppy sea; at 15.12pm we had our first hit thanks to the knowledge and skills of the boatmen. Right in front our eyes were these most magnificent and wonderful creatures - the sighting of my first sperm whale and there were others to follow.
Sperm whales dive two miles down to feed on the local Calamari and hold their breath for 45 minutes, then come to the surface for a 15-20 minutes break and then dive again. If the first sighting again was exciting then the 2nd and third was just as exhilarating with young calves by their sides. The size of these creatures is enormous even though they are not the largest whales in existence. Totally awesome experience.
The cost of this trip was EC$69.00 if you are a local, and much more if you are not but at that price drinks are also thrown in with a mixture of local fruit juices and a rum punch which was tourist strength. This is an activity I’d highly recommend for families, single, couples, elderly or group. There is a discount if the group is over 20. I was so thrilled with the experience; I booked a second trip soon after which is an endorsement of something totally awesome.
