“Lovely rooms, great hostess, good location”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Based on other Trip Advisor reviews, we stayed at Cocoa Cottages for 4 nights. And, we are really glad we chose this place. First of all the cottages are beautiful and each of the 5 cottages/rooms are unique and distinct. This is not your standard hotel or even B&B. The cottages afford a lot of privacy and ours had a big deck/balcony which looked out onto the mountain-side. There are big trees and lots of vegetation all around you. The room was airy with windows on all sides. The bathroom was a bit small, but plenty good enough. The shower was the instant heater kind and if you are looking for a hot shower, be prepared for low volume of water. A minor inconvenience. Second...the people. Iris and her team are very welcoming and helpful. They will give you all the advice and suggestions needed, and even make reservations etc. as they can. We even had our rental car organized by Iris. We were treated more like friends, rather than guests! The open kitchen was a great place to hang out with the hosts as well as other guests, especially at meal times. Meals are a bit on the expensive side, but, considering that they are freshly cooked, using local ingredients and this is on a small island far away from nearby landmasses, they are not a bad deal. Oh! there is wireless internet too - for a nominal one-time charge (not a daily charge like the big hotels). All in all, it was a great experience in itself, staying at Cocoa Cottages. We would highly recommend it. And, did we mention the cocoa tea!!

Room Tip: We had the Honeymoon Suite, but, from what we saw other rooms were as good.

I spent 14 days loving the place. The food, the vibes, the warmth, location, and tenderness and attention by Iris who helps run the place -- everything was perfect. It's not like staying at a hotel or a B&B. The kindness of everyone involved makes you feel you are staying with family. I truly cannot give cocoa cottages a high enough rating (they even make their own slamming chocolate) and I tend to hate staying in hotels because of their corporate vibe. Cocoa cottages is the best possible place I could have picked in Dominica. I love this place.

Yes, this is a special place. I'll have to quote one of the other reviewers in saying this place "feeds the soul". My wife, two children and myself were amazed at the beauty of the place. If you want to forget the everyday busy world of work and complexity this place will wash it all away.
A luxury summer camp like environment with great decor.
Also Extreme Dominica canyoning will supply the excitement you may be looking for. Same owners and great guides that can give your kids & you an adventure they will never forget.
You can see the cocoa trees growing nearby & they make their own chocolate...
It is a small operation and a great way for persons (myself and children) to be envolved in the production.

I spent a long week-end with my husband for our birthdays at Cocoa cottages. We loved it !
Imagine...Waking up with the natural song of the river, running below the cottages.
All rooms are just lovely and a piece of Art themselves. Open on a beautiful tropical garden view ; Huge plants, flowers, fruits, palm trees, vanilla trees and of course cocoa trees. The owners, Liz and Richard use the cocoa beans to prepare a delicate, organic chocolate. The breakfast is healthy and rich in flavor, Liz makes a delicious cocoa tea a dam crazy coconut jam and much more, everything is natural ! That made me feel good and give us enough energy for ours activities of the day... So much things to do in Dominica and a lot of them are nearby Cocoa Cottages; walking up to the water fall, have a rejuvenating hot water bath, make a trip to boiling lake and of course canyoning, (with Extreme Dominica, next door to Cocoa Cottages) was my first time rappeling down the canyons. It is absolutly spectacular and gorgeous ! Again Liz and Richard were so helpfull to organize our days, and also run Extreme Dominica as a Pro team !
After an exciting and wonderful day, it is so perfect to relax, enjoy another cup of cocoa tea or read a book in one of the swinging bed rocking within the rain forest music…
The atmosphere is warm and positive in the Cocoa Cottages, Liz and Richard will make you feel like home.
I am already planning a next trip in Cocoa Cottages, this time with the kids !!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice and unique, but I love the tree house.

Cocoa cottages is really a special place. We stayed here for 3 nights in the tree house. This house has no walls! Rain forest flowers and the river are the only thing you can see from your bed, bathroom, and kitchen. The food at the cottage is very good. Both breakfast and dinner are exelent. Lots of variety, local products and home made specialties. Probably one of the best place to eat in Dominica. Location is also very convinient, you're close to Roseau, waterfalls, hot springs and canyons. We went canyonning whith Liz and Richard, and it is so beautiful that we'll soon be back!

Room Tip: They are all unique so....they are all good.

Such a special place! I just returned from my trip to Dominica and stay at Cocoa Cottage, and it couldn't have been a more beautiful experience! The location itself, in the rain forest, was so very healing with nature's symphony all around. The cottages are so charming with open air, swinging beds, and gorgeous views; they are rustic yet fabulous tree houses! But what was most important and memorable was the hospitality and energy of the place! Liz, Richard and the Cocoa Cottage Family took such good care of me, holding the space for me to have rejuvenating and healing holiday on island!

The location of Cocoa is great! I chose to not rent a vehicle and was vacationing by myself, and found it very easy to get around by foot, taxi and guide. A few things I would recommend on property are using Nahjie (who is part of the Cocoa Cottage family) to guide You to the Boiling Lake hike, having grown up as the hike being his playground he has such fun facts about the nature in Dominica. Also, rappelling down canyons with Extreme Dominica (it's right next door to Cocoa Cottage) MAJESTIC, a must do! Liz's super yummy cocoa tea, it's a hot local beverage, and Liz makes her own with everything from her own garden, Mmmm!

Enjoy! I hope You all will treasure Cocoa Cottage and the beautiful island of Dominica as much as I did!

We stayed at Cocoa Cottages for three nights, and had a wonderful time. The owners made us feel totally at home, and took care of us like we were visiting friends. We had never been to Dominica before, so were new to everything, and we learned so much from them - from island history, to restaurant recommendations, to logistics. They helped us think through our excursion plans, and helped us to make it all happen. They also fed us amazingly delicious food in abundance. It can be a bit overwhelming to fly into Dominica and find your way to Roseau Valley in a rental car (which we did - yay!), but it was totally worth it, and once we got our bearings, we were very comfortable all around. Cocoa Cottages is really only about 10 - 15 minutes up the hills from Roseau, so isn't so remote that it is difficult to get to and from, but it is remote enough that you feel like you are in the jungle! It is also very close to many of the waterfalls and hot springs and beautiful hikes of the area, so is very convenient for seeing this part of the country. We didn't sleep totally well our first night - partially b.c of the heavy rain that fell on and off that night, and partially b/c we weren't accustomed yet to the sounds of the tropics at night (frogs and crickets and grasshoppers :) but we loved it, and we slept great the next two nights.
