My partner and I, both from Amsterdam (Netherlands) stayed at cocoa for 4 nights (12-16 november) and we had the best time! The rooms are clean, spacious and are very nicely decorated (colourful), which made us feel at home right away. Loved our balcony with the view and the hammocks! We liked that there are common rooms/kitchen where you can relax and socialise with other guests if you want to. We found Liz and RIchard to be great hosts, they are very kind, helpful and interested and also great cooks! Cocoa is also a great location, it is very easy to visit i.e. trafalgar and middleham falls and also boiling lake (much recommended walk!). Liz and Richard are very knowledgable about the area and can give advice on pretty much everything there is to do in the surroundings. Cocoa is also close to Roseau, in case you are looking to go out for dinner. There is also Wifi which we appreciated. As it was early season it was not overly busy though, so it was peaceful and quiet, but I cannot say if it is also like that in the busiest times of the year. Highly recommended!

We live in a neighbouring Caribbean Island but if we want to get away from it all, Cocoa Cottages is the place that we think of first! Richard & Liz were hospitible and knowledgeable and the surroundings are just breathtaking! The accommodation is eclectic and truly unique and very, very comfortable. Try their homemade chocolate, it's awesome! They have other activities on offer including Canyoning, hiking and island sightseeing with their great guide Jeffrey but we decided to relax on this trip. Can't wait to come back. Highly recommended!

My fiance and I spent 8 days Dominca and stayed 3 nights at Cocoa Cottages. We were given the Jwa room.
The grounds are very well kept, with tropical flowers and plants everywhere. As Richard's wife Liz showed us around the room, I think we both walked around in awe of how beautifully decorated it was; you feel as if you were dropped into a caribbean picture book. Give credit where credit is dued: in terms of the aesthetics, alot of love and attention was put into making the cottages as appealing and comfy as possible. The management is highly complemented in this respect. It's really unfortunate that the rest of our stay didnt quite live up to the initial hype.
Iris the owner was away during our stay so Richard and Liz took care of us. They are nice people but you could tell that they are really responsible for the Canyoning. We only ate dinner on our second night and I think that started the whole downhill spiral.
We got the impression, as one person mentioned, that it was more of an inconvenience for them to cook for us. When we got back from the Boiling Lake hike that day no one was at home, so we changed off and went down to the kitchen to snack on a bag of fruit that we had. Richard and Liz came home soon after and met us in the kitchen. Liz was obviously stressed out and quickly walked through the kitchen and greeted us with,"Hi guys!" and went straight over to the counter (about 30m away from where we were seated) and started to prepare dinner. We chatted a bit with Richard though. Liz then calls out to Richard....Dialouge now.....
Liz: Richard, did you ask them if they eat chicken?
Richard: Hey guys do you eat chicken?
Yes we eat chicken. Liz, yes they eat chicken.
We really aren't the type of people who purposely look for things to complain about, but we were so turned off by that one that we just packed our fruit away and went upstairs and waited for dinner. That really put a damper on things and somehow made us more aware of other things.
Like not being give any bath gel but instead 2 small bottles of shampoo, or not being able to sit on the verandah at nights because we didnt have any candles. Those of you who have been there already would agree that your room would quickly become swarmed with insects if the light is left on inside the room. There aren't any drawers in the room so we were literally living out of our bags for the 3 days. The next night we went down to Roseau to get dinner (thank God we had a jeep) and came back to find the entire place in utter darkness. Not even the light in the driveway was left on. Richard knew that we were out because we told him where we were heading. At least we had our cell phone so that bit of light helped us as we parked in the extremely narrow drive way and felt our way through up to our room. The loose nails where the drift wood had broken off also drew our attention. That and the fact that the balcony in the Jwa room is not as stable as it looks (my fiance almost learnt that the hard way) made us realize that it could get a bit dangerous for children if parents arent extra careful.
All in all we were really ticked that we didnt remain at Narakiels Inn in Roseau. We would highly recommend this Inn for the more outgoing tourists who dont need all the pomp. Hospitality and attentiveness on the part of management are very important to us. Ofcourse you cant please everyone but in the hospitality industry and more so, when guests pay so much so stay at your accommodation, you surely should try to please as many as you can.
I guess I should expect a rebuttal from managemnet on this one. Almost every review which expresses any bit of discontent has gotten one, which in my opinion is extremely disrespectful especially when they start to get personal.

We came down from the north for a few days to take care of some business in town and hike the boiling lake. Cocoa cottage was perfect! Iris was very friendly and warm and the rest of the staff was very helpful. Iris has a great aesthetic and it was apparent throughout. We went to the falls, and hiked the boiling lake, we'll be back next year for some canyoning! Thanks Iris!!

We have lived and travelled in the Caribbean for over four years and little surprises us. The Cocoa Cottages did! It is a truly unique experience and well matched to the truly unique beauty of Dominica. We made our way from North to southern dominica ending off in Cocoa Cottages. We spent 8 nights here.
The rooms all have their own flare with funky, creative detail. All rooms are el fresco but the shade from trees and mountain breezes coming off of nearby Trafalgar falls keeps it reasonably cool. Fresh local flowers greet you and you cannot help letting out a deep sigh and feel the relaxation wrap around you; as you look out into the lush view of breadfruit, banana, coconut and hundreds of other trees.
Unlike other guest houses in Dominica Cocoa Cottages has a secret weapon: Iris. She is the owner and manager here and has lived in Dominica for over 8years. Bursting with the creativty that is so evident throughout the property she is also a wealth of knowledge. Iris can help you explore Dominica and guide you to suitable choices of adventures. From gentle walks through the rainforest, a guided island tour to learn about the Kalinago Indians, the very last survivors living in the caribbean after the Columbus invasion and colonisation. The many agricultural aspects, or closer to home learn more about chocolate making from Iris who makes the best chocolate I have ever tasted from cocoa trees on the property. She also can set up a once in a lifetime experience with Extreme Dominica. A canyoning tour of various gorges with packages to suite those up for a real challenge or first timers where they show you every step and show a part of Dominica that few ever will. Its beautiful and alot of fun!
Cocoa Cottages is a special place for free spirited travellerswho really want to get away. I know you will enjoy it as much as we did!

Room Tip: All rooms have been built to give the guests privacy, honeymoon room was where we stayed.

My husband and I stayed in the honeymoon suite in June, 2011. We adored the room and the property. The room was octagonal shaped and was like our own private treehouse. We enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest and its inhabitants. My favorite part was the full porch with a swinging bed. It was very cozy and romantic. We also enjoyed our hosts, Richard, Liz and Iris. They were very friendly, gracious and had lots of information about the area. We also enjoyed breakfast on-site every day. We were welcomed with fresh fruit daily which includes mangos, pineapple and bananas; toast and eggs however you wanted them. We left each morning very satisfied. We would definitely recommend cocoa cottages to anyone who is considering staying in Dominica. We hope to return again soon! Krista and Omar

Cocoa Cottages was so wonderful - our room was beautiful and the big terrace was the perfect place to relax with the rain forest coming right up to our balcony.

Iris' knowledge is invaluable and we took the best trips on her advice - walking to a local spa, visiting water falls and hitch hiking into town. we didn't have a car which id highly recommend - the Dominicans are so welcoming - everybody we passed on the road said hello and let us ride in the back of their trucks.
