I was very impressed with the location, amenities and food service at this hotel. I have no complaints whatsoever. I have travelled all over the Caribbean and would recommend this hotel highly. I would stay here again without hesitation.

I checked in to the hotel for a conference and was placed in the older section of the hotel, and given a ocean view room. Three issues detracted from my stay.
1) The room had numerous mosquitos that fed on me throughout the night, despite requests for spraying in the room, the mosiquitos persisted and the ants in the bathroom were daily reminders of my unhappiness.
2) Hot water was absent 4 of 7 days; when it was present it had insuffiecent force to remove soap and shampoo. A request to the front desk brought a quick response from maintainence who unhappily reported the hotel had lower water supplies leading to low pressure.
3) Lastly rooms in the older section of the hotel over"hear" the bar and on nights with live entertainment ,the lack of full windows on the rooms have music playing until much later than i wished.

We booked a standard room instead of an ocean view room thinking they would be on par just w/o the ocean view since it was just $50pp less for the week. Boy were we WRONG!! We were put into a tiny, noisy, hot, bare-bones room! We had only window screens with wooden slats to keep the sun out, so we heard everything and everyone all night. Our a/c didn't work, we had staff check it 4 times to just tell us "it was as perfect as they could make it"! After no sleep for 3 nights, they finally had a room open up and moved us to one with a/c. It was near the street so now we heard the crickets, street noise, and cleanup staff clunking all the beer/wine bottles in the trash at midnight. So to say the least - we got no sleep for the week we were there! Staff didn't seem to care, and their answer to this problem was "I know it doesn't help you, but once you leave on Saturday, we will be tearing all those older rooms apart and reconditioning them"! So that is why they would not change out the a/c that didn't work. They should have never booked those older rooms - but greed of extra money made them do it!!
The chartered airplane that Ft Young scheduled to pick us up in St Lucia never showed up on Saturday upon our groups arrival, so we had to stay the night on St Lucia - a whole other story!! (The tour director again - almost left us at the hotel - we had to chase the van down - but our luggage was in the van). Upon arriving on Sunday and placing the 50 of us on it, they landed in Dominica with only 1/2 of the luggage--the other half left in St Lucia because of weight considerations!! So now to dive, many of us had to find rental gear. Luggage was delivered later that evening after many protests.
We were there with the DAN (divers alert network) conference and wanted to enjoy some scuba diving too. The dive shop and operation was pitiful! Don't count on the dive shop for anything. No one seemed to have any knowledge and every answer there ,as well as for the hotel, was "no problem"!! But that didn't take care of anything! They did find gear for most that didn't receive their luggage - one positive! The dive operation was poorly organized and didn't know how to handle such a large group. At one point, they changed departure location, under the guise of safety, to another location--then told us we had to lug our gear off the boat--in the dark--creating even more unsafe conditions. On one of the dive days, a large portion of divers didn't get to do their 2nd dive because they had run out of tanks! Unexcuseable!! and no refund!! Some of the divemasters had just arrived on the island and had no idea about the locations of the dive sites and had to keep resurfacing to find their way to and from - absurd!!
The food at the hotel was ok. It was served buffet style - so you get what you see. The one time we did order food from the bar, it was not served as ordered and my burger was burned and tasted like charcoal. So we found some wonderful restaurants off-site in town. The minister of tourism from Trinidad was brought in to help train the staff but all they seemed to learn was to take away your plate while you were still eating! No common courtesies and very poor service.
The tour desk was very disorganized. A group of us finally went to the director and had her post the sign up sheets for some tours WE put together. We left on one tour and the driver had tried to insist on a different van since he felt something was wrong with the vehicle. The director insisted he take that vehicle. We ended up breaking down in the middle of a dark road on a curve and had no light to see or be seen!! Finally someone came along and suggested we all get out and push the vehicle up the hill for our safety. So we all got out and pushed!! But we feared for our life that we were going to be hit by a careless driver. We finally got a replacement vehicle 2 hours later, now have missed our cocktail party and dinner. When we arrived back at the hotel, we had to beg for clean plates and scrounge for some food for dinner - thank goodness it was only 4 of us. Again - no apologies! Our trip we booked to see whales wasn't uneventful either. We got out on the water and the captain was upset seeing snorkelers in the water with the whales. So he quickly turned the boat around causing all of us on the boat to fly across the boat and we had to hang on to keep from being injured. During this episode, our boat almost ran over a snorkeler and whale too. Very dangerous moves out of anger made by this boat captain from Dive Dominica!
Final day, they sent 1/2 of our luggage ahead of time and we had to be on the bus to the airport by 5:30 am. Again our bus broke down and we had to smash our group into the other vehicles and luggage van. Then upon arrival in St Lucia, there was still luggage left in Dominica that will be 2 -3 days before it can arrive to it's final destination because the plane was too full of fuel!
Staff seemed so lifeless and sad - very few smiles. They were quick to respond to our requests, but never any productivity once they responded! It was always "no problem" or "nothing more can be done" and no solution.

Traveling on business I had low expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised. I found the staff to be welcoming, but not obsequious, the rooms to be basic and totally adequate, the location fabulous and the services much better than I would have expected. Roseau may not be the place to be if you're vacationing, considering the fabulous natural settings around the island, but if you find yourself there, go for the new rooms at seaside - they are really nice! Closer to the bar in the older rooms, you'll have wifi, and apparently all the rooms have an adsl connection.

Avoid the tour desk - it is a real rip-off; poor service and a high price. Go to the tourist information center half a block away on the quay. Better yet, if you have the time, check out other parts of the island.

Stayed last week-end in Fort Young hotel. I was certainly too lazy and not adventurous enough to try something else.

We were welcomed by an unwelcoming and unsmiling staff who allowed us to check in but advised us that we would have to change rooms between day 1 and day 2 (within the same category) because other guests would arrive the next day and their rooms were already allocated by the computer system and the allocation could not be changed...

We booked three Deluxe Ocean Front (the highest category below the suites).

The following description equally applies to all three.

Pluses:
The rooms are very vast, with a nice sea view.
The internet (wired) connection is very fast

Minuses
The decoration however is horrible (think marroon tiles and beige tapestry).
The bed linen was sticky (humidity?).
A few electrical connections were loose and looked dangerous.
The lighting is bleak (power-saving neon bulbs).
The ceiling fan is loose and vibrates like it's gonna fall on you.
No minibar, broken coffee maker.
No lighting above the bath tub.

Restaurant:
- the bar snack is very decent and fair-priced (but when you arrive at 0945PM they tell you to rush off because the kitchen should already be closed and they're doing you a favour to take your (last) order
- same thing at 11PM for the drinks
- the main restaurant is very bad and expensive
- the breakfast buffet is ok
- the Monday night buffet is a rip-off (think overcooked dry leg of lamb cooling down on a plastic chopping board)

- the hotel is very expensive ($222/night in Dominique in septembre is probably the most I've paid around the Caribbean at this time of the year)

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT THE STAFF NEVER SMILES AND LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE BOTHERING THEM EVERY TIME YOU TALK TO THEM.

I have stayed at this hotel twice. The view of the ocean is spectacular and the location is great. We loved the pool, although the hot tubs/Jacuzzi's we're not in the best condition.
