“Best Value in Dominica & to American Standards”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We really enjoyed our stay at the Fort Young Hotel in Dominica. This hotel is very well located in the center of Roseau, really close to the port. We paid to upgrade our room to a suite from an oceanview room, the upcharge is 50% less at check in. The agents were very courteous and always helpful in providing directions or places to go. The lady at the activities desk was also very friendly and was able to arrange a guide for us for our hike to the boiling lake within a day's notice, even though the hike took place during New Year's Day.

The suite was very nice, called the Soufriere Suite, we had a kitchenette with microwave, and a fridge. We also had two full bathrooms in our suite, and we had a huge bedroom in our suite with a great view of the sea.

We were a bit disappointed that the hot tub was out of order, but the pool area was nice. The fitness center is quite nice as well, with well maintained equipment, I wish it were a bit bigger, but it is a suitable size for this hotel.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and recommend others to stay at the Fort Young Hotel.

We booked here at the last minute and found that the pluses of the experience (friendly staff, great views, central location, nice rooms) totally outweighed the minuses (bad check-in experience, mediocre restaurant, poor climate control). A trip to Dominica is an adventure and the laid back atmosphere will contribute to long waits for food and, potentially, inattentive service. We had some questionable service like some of the other reviewers. But as long as you sit back and take in the island air, agitation should remain low.

Room Tip: get an ocean view room. The vista is spectacular.

My family and I arrived at Fort Young and we were immediately impressed with the charming beauty. High points of this hotel are the beautiful views and hotel grounds , the helpful and friendly staff and the proximity to downtown. It was never boring there. Low points were the cockroach in my room, the slippery tiles in the corridors when rain fell which was the reason my niece fell, and our long wait to be checked into one of our rooms. Overall, the experience was a good one and if I visit Dominica again, here is where I would stay.

We enjoyed the hotel, as well as its location. The view at sunset from our room was magnificent. Staff was always courteous and very nice. However service at the Restaurant where we ate dinner on three occasions was absolutely terrible! It took between 2 and 3 hours to get our food, and the waiter could just not keep track of our order. I understand that it was a busy week, but it was really poor service. We also had problem with our kids room, where the door lock was broken and they were locked in the room 3 or 4 times during our 6 day stay. The lock was never fixed, and we were only offered a different room at the very last minute on our last night. The rooms were not always clean.

Thank you very much for your feedback. On behalf of management we apologize that your stay at the Fort Young did not meet with your expectations. We always strive to exceed the expectations of our guests.

In regards to your experience at the Restaurant we deeply apologize for the long wait and poor service. This is not the usual standard of the restaurant. We will be speaking to the relevant managers to ensure that this not occur again.

The locks at the hotel are automated key locks and sometimes the technology do fail and unfortunately this occurred during your stay.

We provide housekeeping service on a daily basis to our guests. I will be following-up to find out what went wrong.

Again we apologize that your stay did not meet your expectations. We would love to have the opportunity to serve you again.

Regards

Well what can one say about, presumably, the best hotel on the island. If this is the best then I dread to think what the rest are like. We were put into a waterfront room which was built only a few years ago. Doors hanging off the cupboards. Fridges that I don't think have ever been defrosted. Light fittings broken. Peeling paint. Showers that look like they belong in a prison. (Ladies you are unable to unhook them ). If this is their newest rooms, goodness knows what the older rooms must be like.
You have to either walk through a long dreary corridor, with no character to it, or up numerous flights of stairs, to get to the restaurant or bar. The Balas bar is fine for those who need quiet, because it is quiet. Apart from the barman, and a few staff wandering around, there seemed to be no one else in the hotel. Being the run up to Christmas and the New year this bar should have been buzzing.
We booked in for the New Years Eve gala night. What a mistake that was.. A fiasco if ever there was. The dining area was pretty bland, with a few sparkly strips of material pinned to the walls and some coloured water filled vases on the tables. One of which we didn't even get on our table. Some poinsettia plants dotted around. You are paying top dollar for what can only be described as a very mediocre meal. I have no idea what the chef was doing in the kitchen, but not a lot I would have to assume. SHAMBLES is the word that comes to mind. A small bowl of soup took over an hour to reach us. 30 minutes later, we received what should have been a sorbet. Cold coloured water, and some ice chips floating around, I call it. After another wait of 40 minutes our main meal was finally served. My husband had congealed gravy on his meat, which in affect means this had not been heated through properly. The meat which was pork was barely heated through. The pork was fairly tough and dry. If that was slowly cooked, it was put in an oven and forgotten about. My husband had the chefs SPECIAL CHERRY TRIFLE. Mistake. Husband said he never found a cherry. So he is not to sure what was supposed to be special about it. Because I complained the wine waiter very kindly made sure our glasses were well topped up all night. Probably the only good thing about the whole night. Going back into the bar area, my husband had the misfortune to witness a form of bullying by a younger member of staff against an older member of staff, while the guy was trying to do his job. Because of the indifference of the staff we felt there was no point in telling anyone. It ended up with my husband intervening. Breakfast is mediocre too. Nothing exciting to report there I'm afraid. Self service. We left our table to go get breakfast only to find when we returned that our tea and coffee had been whisked away and the table given to someone else. Choice of a soggy bake, fried banana, chipolata sausage and very thin strips of fatty bacon. With the usual cereal, toast and fruit. Eggs were nice and freshly cooked though. This was served in what I guess as being a dining area if the weather is bad and you cannot sit outside on the balcony. No one in their right mind would want to sit and eat in that room. It really has to be one of the most dreary, dull and boring rooms I have seen. Would we recommend for Christmas, New Year. For the price Definitely Not. Extremely disappointed in what should have been a good night. I'm just hoping that the start of our New Year is not going to follow through the rest of the year.
After complaining to the hotel manager we were told that we would receive a discount for the poor food. On checking our bank account we were charged the full amount ... No discount as yet !!!!!

The hotel is conveniently located and the staff was very helpful. We arrived late at night and staff made an additional effort to get us something to eat. Meeting rooms are convenient and we received good support for the meeting.

We traveled from Guadeloupe to Dominica by ferry with Express-Des-Illes. They conveniently dock about 500 meters from Fort Young hotel Dominica.
There where many taxi drivers waiting at the dock, but since Fort Young hotel is so close we decided to walk there. Closest entrance was the back one, through the Boardwalk Cafe and a security guard guided us through a maze of corridors and elevators to the reception area.
Dominica is a very laid back country, so don't expect the same type of service as you get in other hotels around the world. Dominicans are very friendly though, and always happy to help. The girl at reception checked us in and told us that a security guard would show us to our room. Strange that a hotel uses security guards to show you to you room, it raises questions about safety to say the least, but I guess it shows they they are aware of possible problems and are handling it. The security guard also gave us a tour of this large property so we would know where the pool and jacuzzis are located. There was only one jacuzzi in service which looked reminiscent of a tar pit, so we decided not to use these facilities in fear of stumbling upon dinosaur bones...
Our room was in the old part of the hotel, there is another wing that has been completely refurbished but it seems like a hit or miss situation in regards to where you'll be allocated a room. The room looked like it was as old as the hotel itself, I felt a bit like explorer Livingstone in Africa, with an old fan on the ceiling, wooden cubboards and a boarding school like bathroom. Everything felt old and tired, and although the room probably was clean by local standards, it was not clean by ours. The toilet was dirty from years of abuse, the kind that no amount of cleaning can fix I'm afraid. Furthermore, the shower looked like a prison shower, and I could not get it to work. We did have a small terrace with a nice view, so we enjoyed the sunset with a nice drink.
Breakfast is very expensive, but hey we ordered from room service just to try it out. As I stated that I was a vegetarian, we got some pieces of fruit, 2 pieces of toast an OJ and a tea. Would not recommend spending your money on this...
We went to the Waterfront Restaurant a few times and loved their vegetarian food, it is also not expensive. Just avoid the Waterfront Restaurant and Boardwalk Cafe when a cruise ship is docked, the waitresses charge more and probably pocket the difference...
The only thing Fort Young hotel Dominica has going for it is the central location in Roseau. If this is not a necessity for you, I would not recommend staying here. You can find better quality accommodation in Dominica, I would suggest renting a cottage in the hills somewhere, you get more bang for your buck. FreeAsBirds

Thank you very much for your feedback. On behalf of management we apologize that your stay at the Fort Young did not meet with your expectations. We always strive to exceed the expectations of our guests.

However we would like to clarify some points highlighted in the review:-

Dominica is laid back, but the friendliness of the people does lend itself to great service. It is what we strive for at the Fort Young and we are sorry it was not delivered in your case.
Where it was mentioned that “Dominica is a very laid back country so don’t expect the same type of service as you get in other hotels around the world” is a bit misleading as the Fort Young Hotel do adhere to international standards and have been certified by the Accommodation certifying body here in Dominica and also international organizations such as Hospitality Assured. The Fort Young is known as the premier Hotel in Dominica because of our adherence to international standards.

With In regards to sSecurity concern, Dominica and the Fort Young are very relatively safe compared to other destinations and hotels. However it is always prudent that one practices basic safety precautions. Our Security Hosts performs dual roles, one of bellman and the other to ensure that our guests and employees are safe and secure.

There are different room categories at the hotel starting with the Fort Room at the lowest room category to the Suite which is the highest room category. A description and pictures of all rooms are displayed on all booking engines and our website. Rooms are not allocated randomly but are reserved based on the guest’s choice. Many of our guests do enjoy the uniqueness and quaintness of the fort rooms as it showcases the heritage and history of the Fort that once stood where the hotel is now operating.

In regards to the menus and drinks- the hotel hasve several bars and restaurants catering to our guests. There are drinks menus highlighting the price of each beverage in the hotel in each of those areas.

We once again apologize that your experience here at the hotel did not meet your expectations and I hope the above explanation gave some clarifications. We do hope that we will have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.
