“Comfort for Less”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

My brother his wife and I spent five nights at Narakiel's Inn. We stayed in the 2-bedroom suite. Each room had a TV, their bed room had a small fridge and microwave, that was a first, we were given a local cell phone, that was also a first. The inn is conveniently located to the town area - a nice stroll over the bridge and you are there. Richard the local manager was very helpful in arranging for us to be picked up from the airport and also made arrangement for our tours.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a good view of Roseau

My husband and I spent our 1st anniversary here and we are very pleased with our choice. Lynn and Tony were the best in ensuring that we had a great stay. Tony arranged for me to get roast breadfruit and fried fish (my favourite) and advised us on where to visit in Dominica. This little secret in the heart of Roseau is the perfect getaway inn, clean and refreshing. Lynn was great with communication and extremely professional. I must say my husband is planning a guys trip to Dominica and he is excited about staying here again. Inexpensive but classy place. Thanks so much Lynn and Tony, we appreciate everything you did to help us to have a great stay in your country.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, iy depends on how large your party is.

Basic rooms are 150 sq ft and "studios" are 200 sq ft. Studios have a small kitchenette, with plates, cutlery, blender, food processor, stove, fridge freezer and more. Both rooms have fridge, microwave, complimentary snacks (pringles and oreos), TV with cable, ensuite bathroom. They have packed in a lot of things into a small space.

The inn is a converted residential apartment, and there is no front desk. There is a communal balcony where you can smoke, with a view over the river. It is towards the outskirts of town so is quiet at night, but a fair walk into Roseau. We drove into town to get dinner.

Richard, the manager, is very friendly and loves to chat. He helped us organise a tour to Boiling Lake. Very small town feel, so don't expect New York City type service. Rooms are cleaned every other day.

Room Tip: Studios have flat screen TVs. Bedrooms don't.

Narakiel's Inn was our choice for Roseau. We stayed there for two nights. The hostel is perfectly located in the center, on the top floor of the apartment building. Owner/manager was very helpful and even gave us local cell phone for the stay in case we wanted to contact him.
The Inn does not have a private parking but there is a lot of parking spots in front of the building.
The weakest part of the place are rooms. We must admit our was well prepared (towels, bath robes, fridge, tea bags, some sweets etc.), however it was very poor in comfort: tiny, not too pleasant, bad view out of the window means they were all the time closed - this all made this room pretty "dark and claustrophobic" for us. Moreover air-conditioning was loud and placed in front of the bed - cold air did blow just into our face, which was not pleasant.
No breakfast is available on site.

Narakiel’s Inn is one of these places that are not going to let you go indifferent. The precursor to future troubles was the contact over the Internet with the sales lady who insisted on prepaid reservation which was declined due to the adventurous nature of the Caribbean transport system. This was not good enough and she went on and on advertising the virtues of prepayment; so far so good but upon arrival there was more formidable obstacle to face. The local manager, whose name is exactly like the name of the local supermarket, (apparently the family business has expanded) did not even bother to meet his guests at the front door (the rooms are on the third floor of an apartment building) but started shouting instructions from his balcony how to proceed through the doors and stairs. Later on, he was particularly insistent on going “by the book” and collecting a deposit against possible loss of the room key. At the same time he was unable to produce the change resulting from the transaction most likely because this was nitty-gritty stuff not worthy of being in “the book”. The following day he was nowhere to be seen and at the end of the second day when confronted about the change he still did not have American money so he produced local currency (East Caribbean dollars were never mentioned as means of business transaction anywhere). The key continued to be a source of friction and anxiety since it was to be presented before departure and after the room was inspected for “damages” of who knows what sort. This was difficult to arrange since the manager was not available at any time but only when he thought he was supposed to be available. In the context of taxi-waiting for a transfer to the airport this attitude was sheer insolence. On top of that he dared to give lectures on Caribbean lasser-passer, easy-going way of life that reigns supreme in the Dominica and that this was the time to leave the rat race of North America, to relax and soak it up. If I had not heard the same lecture the previous morning at eight o’clock given to a fellow traveller it would have passed for a “good” advice. Otherwise, the place had all the necessary amenities albeit in rooms too tiny for a greater comfort but the price was reflecting this state of affairs. Most annoying was the fact that nobody seemed to know where this place was, including seasoned taxi drivers of certain age.

Room Tip: Street side rooms get all the view, sun and noise.

"Narakiel's Inn" is not an inn or anything resempling. AVOID if you can. This is one of the worst places I've ever stayed at in the Caribbean.

Rooms are tiny -tiny. The manager is unfriendly - almost hostile. Personally I have never ever experiencied anything like this. After many years of travelling in the Caribbean.

The place is sort of a secret location. It has NO sign what so ever. I spent more than 3 hours finding the place. I asked more than ten locals in the area - and no one had ever heard about 'Narakiels Inn' - and all but one were unable to locate the place according to the street address given on the web site of the "hotel".

The "hotel" has no reception. So you must agree on a specific time to arrive. Same - when you are leaving.

The "hotel" doesn't accept credit cards so you must pay in cash or via Pay Pal. The owner has his own exchange rates, which are not the standard exchange rate - so beware. He tried to cheat me. So if you chose to stay here - pay in USD. If you pay in ECD the owner might cheat you.

Upon arrival you must sign a contract ("Guest Agreement Policy") with several rules and regulations (for instance - it is forbidden to use your own personal extension chords). According to the manager of Narakiel's Inn this is something that all hotels do. Sic!

But the place had their own hotel pen, a welcome snack - and even some welcome microwave oven pop corn.

Pos.: Working a/c (though noisy), a fridge, micro wave oven and hot water. Close to city center; close to West Bus Station.

Neg.: Tiny, tiny room. If you suffer from claustofobia - don't go here. Key doposit. No hotplates. The - virtually - hostile service. Very noisy rats on the ceiling (absolutely so sign of rats in the room though). Has no mosquito net. My room had no view. Half of the rooms have splendid views (I guess) - the other halfs have no views.

Some people are in the hotel industry to provide a good service - while making a living out of it. Others are there to make a profit - not caring much about the custumors. Narakiels Inn is definitively in the last category. Honestly I cannot remember a worse experience than staying at Narakiel's Inn.

Narakiel's Inn is like your home away from home. Everything you read iro location, services & amenities is true with out a fault...no disappointment. This is not my 1st trip to the land of many rivers, so I was not expecting a difference in accommodation, etc, but " boy was I surprised!!" Narakiel's Inn blew away what doubts I had. A totally beautiful, wonderful experience.
A thousand (1000) thank you's to Richard & Magdaline. With out their kindness, helpful attitudes & accommodating demeanor, I don't think my stay would of been so wonderful & memorable.

Room Tip: Single traveller who just wants to relax ie no cooking, choose room 5 the studio . Its quite ideal...
