“Wonderful Staff,Good Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2012

During a two week vacation to Dominica we moved around every few days and stayed at Castle Comfort for only 2 nights and wish we had spent more time there. The location was convenient and we were very happy that we did not stay any closer to or in Roseau. We are snorkelers who enjoyed being able to just jump off the dock at the hotel and also make an afternoon trip to Scott's Head and Champagne. The comfortable and clean Room 15 had the nicest balcony with shade and great views. The best part of Castle Comfort is by far the staff, all locals who were knowledgeable and super friendly. When I mentioned to the breakfast waitress/housekeeper that I had a cough she brewed ginger tea for me! We loved how friendly the Dominicans all over the island are and the staff at Castle Comfort was no exception! Stay there!

Room Tip: Hands down Room 15 wins! Great sea breeze, shady balcony and great view.

We stayed nine nights at Castle Comfort in April 2012 for the purpose of diving. You can dive right from their shore - this is not a great dive site but it is a convenient place to check out your gear and bouyancy before you get on the boat. The boats left at 8:45 each morning and we were back around 12:30 which left just enough time to shower, take care of gear, and eat a quick lunch before going on an afternoon excursion.

Castle Comfort is a diver's hotel. It has non-carpeted floors, a faucet in the shower for cleaning gear, a balcony for hanging wet gear, etc. It is not luxurious and doesn't try to be. The two rooms that have an ocean view cost a little more and in my opinion are very much worth the extra cost. Our room was #14 and was on the corner so we had windows overlooking the courtyard and restaurant and a patio overlooking the ocean (partially blocked by a big almond tree). The room has a working air conditioner.

The staff is friendly and will help you plan afternoon and off-day excursions. Breakfasts are to die for - especially the banana pancakes (and I don't really like bananas that much.) They serve fresh fruit and a freshly squeezed fruit juice every morning plus a choice of eggs and meat, omelet, banana pancakes, french toast, or fruit plate. The restaurant, though, is overpriced and the service is slow even though the staff in the restaurant is very friendly. The BBQ chicken lunch special served on the days when the whale watching boat goes out is very good, but dinner specials were quite mediocre. There is a restaurant on either side of Castle Comfort that we found to be slightly better, and if you have time you can walk into town for other choices. Tao is one of the restaurants almost all the way to town that we especially liked. The menu at Tao is pretty limited, but prices were reasonable and the food was good, as was the atmosphere.

Overall this is a typical diver's hotel with as convenient access to diving as you will find. Since that was the purpose of our trip we would make the same choice again. If you don't expect luxury you won't be disappointed. However, the rooms that are in the back are very near the road and near the kitchen and I would not want to stay in one of those.

Room Tip: Paying the upgrade for an ocean view not only gives you an ocean view but also gives you more privac...

Just got back from a week here, and tthere are my observations - The hotel, and dive staff are very nice and friendly, everyone was very pleasant and helpfull. Rooms - only 15 (i think), and we weren in #15. It is a king over the dive shop with a wonderful ocean view balcony. The only other ocean view is #14, which has 2 queens. You definitely want to be in #15 if possible. Food - The breakfast, which is included in the divers package, is the best meal served there. A fair assortment, and the kitchen will try to do anything you ask for. Other than the grilled chicken sandwich, the other items in the menu are not good. The BB'Q they do several times a week is very good also. The problem appears to be the quality of the products, not the prep - the cooks do the best with what they have to work with. 2 doors down is Zam Zam, a raggae beach bar with WONDERFUL burritos and quesadillas, cheap drinks, and good music. In town don't miss Old Stone Grille - probably the best food on the island and very reasonably priced. Diving - Average caribbean diving. Don't expect the staff to do ANYTHING for you. You gear up your own tanks, and change your tank between dives. If you are staying at the hotel, they will carry your gear to and from the boat daily.. They will take your fins and camera gear when you exit the water if they are not too "busy" on the boat. It appears they are so scared of ANY liability, they don't want to touch yor gear in any way. Even on a small boat in Cozumel, they will at least change your tanks between dives!

Overall - a great staff, sub-par food, average diving. The island is beautiful. Afternoon excursions tto the waterfalls and hot springs are a must-do!

Room Tip: #15 is the best room at the hotel

Stayed here for 8 nights. Dove 11 times, 5 boat dives and one shore dive. This was a very nice place to stay if somewhat sparse. I very much enjoyed the staff of the restaurant, bar and reception. They were all frendly and willing to help with any questions.
The dive operation was first rate! The entire crew were friendly, safety conscious, and excellent naturalists who were great at pointing out things during the dive. They had a sense of humour and would give tips and info about attractions on the island.
I took three day tours that were arranged by the lodge. Here again I found the tour guides [Nigel and Elvis] to be excellent. Went to Trafalger, Titou Gorge and Boinling lake and The Cairb National Park.
Ate 6 meals at the onsite restaurant where thay had a special almost every night. Here again I thought the food was exceptional. Nobody knows how to cook better than the people of the Carribean!!
It was a short twenty minute walk to the heart of Roseaeu which kept it a comfortable distance from the cruise ships but convenient enough to explore the downtown area.
My only complaints are that there was a good deal of road noise at night and there was no refrigerator in the room .
Would I stay there again? Absolutely!!!!!

We spent a week at Castle Comfort diving and had an excellent time. The dive operation is well run and the equipment we rented (BC and regulator) were quite good. During our stay we each completed our 100th dives. The boats and other equipment were very good. The crew and dive masters were professional and at the same time were very personable. A safety and dive plan briefing was always held before the dive and questions were answered. The dive masters (DM) were always attentive to safety in the water. The DM’s were also on the lookout for creatures and fishes of interest. I came away with some great photos including a very juvenile spotted drum, a regal slipper lobster, and a seahorse.
The lodgings were very satisfactory but not luxurious. The staff is wonderful. They ask how you are doing, they answer any and all questions, and they genuinely care about their guests. The room was spotless and kept clean throughout our stay and had the smell of nutmeg on our return each day. No lack of hot water! There is a restaurant and bar on site serving 3 meals a day. Our package included breakfast which was good, fresh, and tasty. We went out for most other meals but we do that as a matter of course when traveling. The lodge is about 1-1/2 miles or about 2 km from downtown Roseau. It can easily be walked or you can take a mini-van for about EC$2.00 – EC$2.50 (US$1.00). A taxi can be had for US$10.

Room Tip: Some rooms are larger than others and if they are not in use, it would be a good idea to ask to take...

Castle Comfort is the perfect location for divers and vacationers. Just south of Dominica's capital Roseau, it offers easy access to town and restaurants (if you ever want to leave, which might be doubtful!), and is right on the ocean. Divers have a great sit-down breakfast (love those banana pancakes) and then walk straight on to their dive boat - nothing could be easier. The accommodations were fine - clean and comfortable, but it's the entire staff at Castle Comfort that makes this third-generation, locally-owned dive hotel really terrific. The kitchen staff was flexible and friendly, the front desk ladies were always helpful with big smiles, and extremely knowledgeable about the island. They expertly booked several hikes with an excellent local guide, Clem, to Ti Tou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls, Emerald Pool, and we also visited Kalinago villages and bought handwoven Carib baskets and crafts. We spent a lot of time on the oceanside deck and bar at Castle Comfort, where best mixologist Kurt Gordon served up creative cocktails and lots of reggae for us. The young hoteliers, sister and brother Arienne and Dan, are very hands on and seek out guest feedback so they can fine-tune their operation; with their excellent staff have created a wonderful experience for visitors at Castle Comfort. Dominica's beautiful people do the rest - they are to a man friendly, polite, helpful and eager to hear that you love their island as you do. All of us are STILL talking about Dominica and Castle Comfort weeks later - we'll be back!

Room Tip: If you're just visiting Dominica and not diving every day, ask for a room in the rear building...

I've stayed at a lot of hotels in the Caribbean and anotehr local hotel in Dominica. My "Excellent" rating is based on comparrisons to the rest of the Caribbean market. Don't take this as an equivilent to the Ritz....but when it comes to a nice clean room, great food, an excellent wait staff and an outstanding dive opperation....this is my top shelf recommendation on where to go to. How long are you really in a room to begin with. The water was hot for showers, cable TV, Free Wi-Fi is a plus too. The dive guides were a lot of fun and knew the sites extreemly well - along with the local sites and trivia. The diving there is unspoiled and probabaly the best I've seen in the Caribbean.

Room Tip: Ocean facing room for sure...but you'll be outside for sunsets regardless.
