“Beware of Excessive Optimism”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2012

When we booked our Eastern Caribbean cruise and found out that Dominica is a great place to see whales, we set out to find a good whale watching tour and settled on Captain Jerry of IslandStyle. Unfortunately, when there is a 90% chance of seeing whales, that means that 10% still don't see them and that was us. Nor did we see dolphins or any other type of marine life. What we did get for our money was a nice boat ride along the coast of Dominica in the rain and a cup of juice.

I contacted Captain Jerry by e-mail in advance. He replied that there was a tour available that day and gave us instructions to mail a check for the full amount to Dominica. I did so and then waited for confirmation that it was received, which I didn't get. I finally e-mailed to ask for confirmation and received only somewhat timely responses that our check had NOT been received weeks after I sent it. Just before our cruise, I finally paid $25 to cancel the check and was given information on where to meet Captain Jerry when we arrived at port.

We hurried off the ship to meet Captain Jerry and then we waited with no sign of him for about half an hour. When he arrived, he had our cancelled check and we paid him cash. My cynical self thinks that he had it all along, but wanted to be paid in cash instead. That would have been nice to know before I paid the bank fee. About a dozen others from our ship arrived at the same time and we set off.

The back of the boat was crowded, so my husband and I climbed around to sit alone on the front, which we enjoyed. The day was rainy and we had to retreat to the covered area in the back for a while. We were out for about three hours and saw no sea life at all, which was so disappointing. There was another whale watching boat in the distance and they didn't seem to be doing any better. We understand that nature is unpredictable, and Captain Jerry seemed to be doing his best, so we don't blame him. Unfortunately though, our experience with him was not a very positive one. If we had seen whales, I would have given the tour a higher rating and been less annoyed by the mediocre customer service before the tour.

Because of the time and money this tour cost us, we didn't feel like we were able to do much else on Dominica except wander the shops near the port before getting back on the ship early. Dominica is a beautiful island and we hope to give it another chance someday.

“Whale watching was great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2011

After some initial confusion as to where we were meeting, we met up with Captain Jerry just before he gave up on us. The 9 of us quickly boarded his boat (and with other 4 people already on board), we were on our way. We motored out away from land and eventually got to see a sperm whale spouting and surfacing several times. We even caught up with a research boat that was studying the whales. While the researchers were telling us about their studies, we saw 2 humpback whales in the distance breeching out of the water. We were quickly on our way to see them up close. We spent a little while following the humpbacks and spotted them quite a few times before they swam off. After a drink break, Capt. Jerry took us along the shore line and told us a bit about the area. All 9 of us thoroughly enjoyed our cruise with Capt. Jerry. His eyesight (which was amazing) and enthusiasm helped to make this a memorable excursion.

“Dont Bother - He doesnt”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2011

we booked Captain Jerry of island style fishing for whale watching for our stop in January. We rang 3 times to give our credit card details to secure the booking. We then had to email 3 more times to try to find out when and where we would be picked up.

On arrival at the Fort Young pier we waited and waited, finally after he was 20minutes late and no show we got the Dive centre at the Fort Young Hotel to call him. He eventually turned up in a rib 30minutes after our tour should have started and said he'd been out in the morning but there were no whales about but he would go and get his boat if we still wanted to go.

It was blatently obvious that he didnt want to take us so we declined, but had wasted a whole day when we could have been doing another excursion.

BEWARE of Capt Jerry book someone else if you want to do the whale watching

“Whale watching in Roseau”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2010

Before our cruise aboard the Carnival Victory in Sept 2010, I made arrangements with Capt. Jerry of Island Style Fishing to go on a whale watching tour. Our ship docked at 9:00 am and Capt. Jerry met 6 of us at the end of the dock and escorted us to his boat which was tied up at another dock. The weather was threatening to rain and the sea was rather rough as we started out. Capt. Jerry is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Dominica and educated us about many things as we all looked for whales.

Unfortunately we had no luck at sighting any whales this day but we did learn a lot about this wonderful island and the weather got better as the day turned into afternoon. Just as we were about to tie up at the dock (since our tour time was ending) Capt. Jerry let out a shout and we took off after what turned out to be a pod of dolphins. I have no idea how he spotted them because it was a good 5 minutes of running time before I was able to make out the splashes on the hrizon which Capt. Jerry had seen. We were able to catch up with them and spend a good 10 minutes or so watching them play around the boat and ride our wake.

It turned out to be about a 5 hour tour for 50USD and although we saw no whales we did have a great time, learned a lot about Dominica, played with the dolphns and saw some flying fish as we cruised along the coast back to the ship. I highly recommend Capt. Jerry and Island Style Fishing if you are ever in Roseau, Dominica. Minimum of 4 people per tour.

“IslandStyle Fishing and Whale Watching - Don't Miss this!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2010

For those of you who want to see whales and lots of them - don't miss the opportunity to sail with Captain Jerry of IslandStyle Fishing and Whale Watching. There is a reason this was the #1 recommendation for things to do in Domenica in Decembers. Captain Jerry is awesome! On our three hour excursion last week we were able to see from 4-6 sperm whale with their young and over 100 dolphin - at half the cost of the cruise ship tour. Jerry has been in the whale watching business for about 20 years and has worked with National Geographic on a documentary about whales. He was a great captain providing us with much information not only about whales, but about Domenica in general. A huge plus is that he will only take 16 passengers at a time. There were only 8 of us on our tour and it was fabulous!
