“Light hike around a colonial fort and ruins”
Reviewed August 12, 2011

We truly enjoyed our afternoon at Fort Shirley. While the main fort area near the parking lot has been restored, much of the fort area is overgrown with forest. There are several trail options for hiking up to the old batteries on hills overlooking the sea. The buildings emerge from the forest along the trail, so that one almost feels as though you are discovering this place for the very first time. This is a delightful activity on the northern coast of the island.

“A short hike to an historic view”
Reviewed April 18, 2002

Fort Shirley is an easy hike from the dock, up a low hill. The cost is US $2.00 to take a self-guided walk around the park. Cannons and stone ruins overlook and guard the harbor where pirates and invaders attempted to plunder the riches of Dominica. Good photo ops, sweeping views, and a nice educational walk for kids. There is a small refreshment stand (where you pay for your ticket) and souvineer shop at the base of the fort. Local children play and frolic on the grassy hillside.
