We visited the Pirate Bay Beach Bar on our recent trip to Curacao. We got to the bar early and got a table in the sand on the beach. The view of the sunset was great. The service and food was good. The drink specials are great during happy hour. The only complaint was the mosquitoes; however the staff came by and loaned us a bottle of repellent.

I'll go ahead and say that this review might have a short shelf-life (basically for the final two paragraphs). First the restaurant:

Awesome place, so much character. If you're looking for an inexpensive meal on the beach, this is the place. Cheap drinks (wine and cocktails ~$6-8 USD), and the entrees weren't bad either. I had Jamaican Jerk Chicken (very good - lots of sauteed vegetables came with it, but didn't list that on the menu) for about $18 USD, and my wife had chicken skewers (I think $16 USD). Portions were large.

So here's the part that will probably change in the next few weeks (depending on how fast things get built in Curacao) -

We had a bit of trouble finding Pirate Bay due to what appears to be some construction occurring in that area right now. We stayed in the Marriott from Nov 26 - Dec 1, 2012, and attempted to walk to Pirate Bay on the first night of our stay. We got as far as an access road just beyond the Hilton (not a far walk), and began to walk down the muddy driveway into what looked like a construction site. Being in an unfamiliar area, and not able to see the restaurant after walking for a little while, we turned around and went back to the hotel.

A few nights later we decided to drive over, and found the alternate driveway that is a bit further up the road. Again, very dark, weaving through a construction site and past a couple of houses, but we finally found it. So my advice to those who are going soon: don't give up, it really is back there, just keep going and you'll find it.

The fish soup was not bad, but too salty. Chicken with peanut souse had too much adds that made it not possible to feel the taste of chicken. Also we were wondering why they offer vitel as a water here in Latin America. And of course this restaurant was overpriced. The good things were sea view and life music.

Reservations made through email before i ever arrived in country! Nice and easy i like that, I had dinner with my girlfriend right next to the water, unfortunately mother nature didnt cooperate and the sunset was a little obscured by clouds, butt it was still a delightful experience. The food was good, we had a Tuna sashimi appetizer, it was good, nicely prepared and presented. t had a cesar salad that she enjoyed and I had the Catch of the day, Mullah(sp) Wahoo one of my favorite fish, it was overcooked but tasted good and presented nicely over a bed of caribbean pasta and a side of rice. A bottle of wine and the evening was incredible. Service was good, a romantic evening not spoiled by constant interruption is always welcome, I didnt feel rushed by the staff to move on in what i would consider a cherished spot just feet from the water with a beautiful view.

If we had more time, we would have been back!

This is not the ideal place to go for lunch or dinner but is perfect for when you are at the beach. You can swim at their beach by going into the bar area and buy a bracelet (or it's free if you have a passcard while staying at the Floris Hotel across the street) and grab a chair. Enjoy the day at the beach and walk up to the restaurant for food. Food wasn't great but they have a few local dishes on the menu that make it worth trying. I had the Stoba beef stew and it's actually on an open faced sandwich. It was good but the meat was VERY fatty. Service here is HORRIBLY slow but if you are at the beach and just want a nice lunch, why be in a hurry? Drinks were pricey and the alcohol wasn't plentiful in them but we enjoyed the day here. Not sure I'd do it again just because it took too long to get a quick lunch and the beach wasn't great but I wasn't too displeased considering the view was better than being at home!
