We had mixed feelings about our stay in Hotel Scharloo. We enjoyed some, we disliked others.
We chose this hotel because of the interesting price/quality offer and its fantastic location. Hotel Scharloo is located just a few houses next to the Maritime Museum on the Waaigat, right across from the floating market. With 2 bridges you can walk in just a minute to the heart of Willemstad, Punda and the Handelskade.
Scharloo is a beautiful old neighbourhood, with 19th century old italian style mansion, but deteriorated in the '60. A lot of buildings are being restored, certainly now that the neighbourhood is on the Unesco World Heritage list. But still a lot has to be done, and that is why some consider this neighbourhood not so safe. We never had that feeling and we appreciated the atmosphere of the place.
The hotel is situated in 2 old buildings and is restored in it's original style. We chose the apartment, which is only $ 20 more, but has a little more space, a kitchenette and a balcony of it's own. The garden is nicely done with trees, a cool-down swimming pool with salt water, tables and chairs and some deckchairs.
The rooms are basic, good box spring beds, a bed table with a bed lamp. The closet is a bar on the wall with a shelf above it, a safe on the floor. The bathroom is small, but a major point is: no hot water! That is something we absolutely disliked. Coming from a plane or having to wash your hair with cold water is no fun.
The other is thing is the windows. They do not have glass, only colonial shutters that can be opened or closed. But wooden shutters will not keep the mosquitoes from coming in. Even though we sprayed ourselves with deet, the mosquitoes were biting all night. And you get only a sheet, no blanket, so you cannot protect yourself. I covered myself with towels, but it wasn't enough.
Since the airco (and it's motor) is inside the room, it is enormously load. We slept with earplugs. In the room is also a fan, but even the slowest level will lift you up during your sleep, so we didn't use it.
It's the cold water and the mosquitoes that made me happy to leave. I do not need a fancy hotel, but this was to basic for us. We enjoyed Willemstad, but left for Bandabou (see my review of Lagun Blou) to enjoy the beaches of Curacao.
Because the hotel is just starting up, and there is so much potential, I will recommend this hotel, but improvements need to be made, before I will return.
