“Excellent location, charming building, too basic”
Reviewed January 18, 2011

We had mixed feelings about our stay in Hotel Scharloo. We enjoyed some, we disliked others.

We chose this hotel because of the interesting price/quality offer and its fantastic location. Hotel Scharloo is located just a few houses next to the Maritime Museum on the Waaigat, right across from the floating market. With 2 bridges you can walk in just a minute to the heart of Willemstad, Punda and the Handelskade.

Scharloo is a beautiful old neighbourhood, with 19th century old italian style mansion, but deteriorated in the '60. A lot of buildings are being restored, certainly now that the neighbourhood is on the Unesco World Heritage list. But still a lot has to be done, and that is why some consider this neighbourhood not so safe. We never had that feeling and we appreciated the atmosphere of the place.

The hotel is situated in 2 old buildings and is restored in it's original style. We chose the apartment, which is only $ 20 more, but has a little more space, a kitchenette and a balcony of it's own. The garden is nicely done with trees, a cool-down swimming pool with salt water, tables and chairs and some deckchairs.

The rooms are basic, good box spring beds, a bed table with a bed lamp. The closet is a bar on the wall with a shelf above it, a safe on the floor. The bathroom is small, but a major point is: no hot water! That is something we absolutely disliked. Coming from a plane or having to wash your hair with cold water is no fun.

The other is thing is the windows. They do not have glass, only colonial shutters that can be opened or closed. But wooden shutters will not keep the mosquitoes from coming in. Even though we sprayed ourselves with deet, the mosquitoes were biting all night. And you get only a sheet, no blanket, so you cannot protect yourself. I covered myself with towels, but it wasn't enough.

Since the airco (and it's motor) is inside the room, it is enormously load. We slept with earplugs. In the room is also a fan, but even the slowest level will lift you up during your sleep, so we didn't use it.

It's the cold water and the mosquitoes that made me happy to leave. I do not need a fancy hotel, but this was to basic for us. We enjoyed Willemstad, but left for Bandabou (see my review of Lagun Blou) to enjoy the beaches of Curacao.

Because the hotel is just starting up, and there is so much potential, I will recommend this hotel, but improvements need to be made, before I will return.

We had a very disappointing stay at Hotel Scharloo. We stayed in the largest apartment with a balcony overlooking the floating market. When we arrived the room was extremely dusty. When I walked on the floor my feet turned black. Another big drawback is that the apartments are not air-conditioned so we had to sleep with the windows open and were bitten up by the mosquitoes. Also the rooms do not have hot water so don't expect warm showers. Also, there are no bathtubs so this makes it very difficult when you are traveling with small children. We were willing to overlook all these drawbacks because the apartment was large and had tons of character -- also the balcony/patio was really lovely and was large enough to have our meals outside. But on our second to last night there, there was an open-air disco party next door to the hotel that went until 5AM! The music was load it literally felt as if our bed was on the dance floor! We were so angry that we decided to find another place to stay for our last night in Curacao event hough we had already paid for the room at the Hotel Scharloo. That's how bad it was -- we just couldn't stay one more night.

My fiance and I stayed at the Scharloo for one night, and it was a real disaster. The staff was friendly enough and the room was clean, but the air conditioning didn't work when tried it late, after the front desk was shut down for the night. The fan was very weak as well, which made it difficult to sleep in the heat.

In the morning the shower flooded the bathroom and our room, which made getting ready to leave for our early flight just a tad difficult. We used all the available towels and there was still a half inch of water on the floor.

We informed the staff of the Scharloo of the problems when we returned and they said we should have told the night watchman about the air con, that it works, and that we had it on the wrong setting. My fiance is an engineer and I also know how to work a remote control, so I seriously doubt this. (It also sounded broken...loud and rattling.) And anyway, who wants to go find the night watchman at midnight when all you want to do is go to bed?? They had nothing to say about the flooding.

We stayed at Scharloo for a week with a large group of friends.
Staff was very helpful; arranging trips, recommending good places to eat or visit and so on.
I had to get back home early and they did what they could to help me out. Great !
Rooms are big, equipped with air-co and fan. A small fridge and safe are also present.
A small swimming pool and lounge seats are at the guests disposal.

In short: a nice place to stay !

This newly re-opened Hotel (March 2010) is located only a 3 min. walk from Punda, one of Willemstad's centers with a lovely view of the "floating market". Very nice staff, a small pool and affordable rates. The Bus station also is only a few min. away.
We have stayed there a total of 14 days and enjoyed every day. Free Wifi-Internet. The hotel-rooms are somehow simple (only fan, no AC), but the two appartements are lovely.
