“Shopping Area”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

The shops are pretty run down & lacking compared to other Carribean islands. The markets are a little seedy & offer a lot of the same stuff.

“The touristy but pretty side of Willemstad”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Handelskade (see other review) defines Punda. Beautiful Dutch-Caribbean architecture, lots of shopping, restaurants, attractions like the postal museum, Fort Amsterdam, Mikve Israel Synagogue etc. Don't miss a quick walk inside Fort Amsterdam to see the Governor's palace and the nice large courtyard with the government buildings that enclose it. Also don't miss sitting in green leafy Gomes Plein with alfresco pizza, sandwich, drinks options. In a small alley off the Plaza, is the Nena Sanchez art gallery which is worth ducking into to see the famous artist's work. Walking up again on Breedestraat you end up in the large Wilhemina Plein which has the famous Plein Cafe another nice outdoor dining option at very reasonable prices. Next door are a Subway and Pizza Hut. There is an ice cream place right in the Plaza. On the opposite side from the Plein Cafe is a giant sign saying DUSHI CURACAO (roughly translated to Delicious or Nice Curacao"......if you keep walking up on Hendrikplein away from the square, you enter the beautiful area of Petermaai with places like the Mundo Bizarro and Miles Jazz cafe. There are many charming buildings under restoration. You can then walk back along the Waigat lake by the old market and central market back to Handelskade. On the way you will see the floating fruit and vegetable market with the boats from Venezuela docked alongside. Punda is truly the heart of Willemstad and very walkable at all hours. We completed the route in about 3 hours at leisure.

“Interesting older area, did not feel unsafe”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

We had heard that Punda is a little sketchy in certain parts but we didn't feel unsafe there at all. I recommend you try it and visit the floating market for fruits etc.
