i have stayed here a few times, normally not more than a night or two at a time while in Curacao on business.

The rooms are large and comfortable, nice balconies, will sea views and sea breezes. Nice bar on the beach in a private cove. Convenient coffee bar, gym and convenience store.

Staff very friendly and helpful.

I think I will be a regular at this hotel.

Room Tip: You should ask for a room in the new wing on the right hand side of the hotel. The older rooms are c...

We spent 13 nights here over Christmas & New Year for our honeymoon in a Octagon Superior room, these rooms are spacious with a massive bed, sofa & arm chair and small kitchen, en-suite bathroom with a walk in power shower, with a lovely bathroom in a small dressing room area. There is also a large balcony with sea views. We were made to feel welcome with a free bottle of champagne
However on arrival the bedroom floor was dirty with grit & dust, and bedside surfaces were quite dusty. House keeping came up straight away to sort this out.
The room does have a fantastic air con system, sometimes even on level one after a while it was to cold.
Breakfast is a great choice of buffet style food, cereals, breads, pasteries, hot food, cold meats & cheeses, at a cost of $20 US per adult.
They have 2 restaurants, Belle Terrace, and Blues. Belle Terrace we only went to once for a excellent caribbean buffet on Christmas eve. It's situated just in front of the breakfast bar area, and just a stone throw from the beach. Our favourite place to eat was Blues, a restaurant/ bar situated right on top of the pier over looking the gorgeous beach/bay area. You really feel like your on the water! The food was generally very good, partically the ribs.. they do themed night according to what day of the week it is.
Reception was in the older part of the building, it was pleasent with a seating area. I did notice around here on several occasions the bitting insects were partically hungary! There is free wi fi available through out the hotel, which is just as well because the businnes cener with it's 2 computers was the worst smelling room I've ever been in, and I'm in the building trade! Pure damp. A real let down for the hotel, with it's normally high standards.
Besides the beach, there is a great big infinity with a decking area, set out with loungers. There is also a great pool bar, with great smoothies, food & drink. Besides the beach there is another bar, serving mostly drinks.
A few tips- there is a small chemist with drinks etc, 5 minutes walk away, to the left out of the hotel's front entrance, on the way you'll also pass a couple of restaurants.

We stayed here for a week in an Octagon Superior room. This is in a relatively new wing of the hotel, which is not very fancy from the outside, but the interior is nice and up to standard. The room is spacious, modern, tiled and well furnitured. The beds are huge and comfortable. The airco works well, it was actually quite chilly. There is a small balcony with view of the ocean.
You can make tea or coffee in the small kitchenette and even prepare a sandwich or heat a simple meal if you want.
There is an open bathroom, but the toilet annex shower is separate. Using the shower means always a lot of water spilled over the toilet and floor, so that you need your towels to keep this area clean and sort of dry.
It was peak season and that showed sometimes in a shortage of fresh towels, in the room as well as at the beach. We experienced a few times that clean towels were still in the laundry.
Wifi works, but not always and everywhere, sometimes in the room, sometimes only in public areas, sometimes not at all.
There is ample parking space on the hotel grounds, despite being fully booked.
Breakfast had a good choice from the buffet, as well as eggs cooked on order. Although breakfast is not included in the price, we choose to stay in the hotel, after we tried one day an outside breakfast, which was not nearly as good and with much less choice.
The hotel is some 20 minutes walking from Punda and the Queen Emma bridge, but that is not recommended at dark. There are at least 3 good restaurants in the near vicinity and we can recommend them all (Fishalicious, Seasons and especially Rozendael).
For us the hotel was nice and OK, but nothing really special. Everything is good or as to be expected, but we missed in a way the little extra or the finishing touch and we did not feel being pampered.

We recently stayed at the Avila Hotel for 5 nights. We booked a Deluxe Room Bella Alianza, which was located in a building of 4 floors, some of the rooms located in this building have ocean view, other partial ocean view and others garden view. Ours had partial ocean view and garden view with a nice balcony.

The hotel and rooms:

The hotel itself is beautiful, is an old structure that became hotel in 1949. The room is ok, nothing fancy and can feel pricey at first. However, the room in general is very clean, the shower is really good, with fresh water, plenty of towels, and clean. Beds are good with good pillows as well.
The hotel offers free shuttle to Willemstand during weekdays (Monday to Friday). The mini bus leaves the hotel at 9 am and there are two options to return: 11:30 am or 16:30. Don’t miss to go to the Center and see the beautiful colorful houses, the Renaissance Mall & Rif Fort offers good stores and places to buy souvenirs.

Another advantage of the hotel is that offers complimentary parking and wi fi. There is also a business center with 2 computers if needed. The breakfast buffet is really good, it is USD20 per person. There is a small market (walking distance from the hotel) if you want to buy water or some goods (crackers, water). Inside the hotel there is “Café Barista” where you can also have breakfast and lunch and is not expensive.

The hotel has two small beaches, there is a bar located right next to the beach that offers all kind of drinks and some food.

The hotel has two restaurants, Blues is really good and beautiful, you will enjoy it.

We had a very pleasant stay, we arrived on the 25th (Christmas day) and all restaurants at the hotel and around were full. The General Manager arranged a table for us in one of the restaurants, even thought it was full because of the celebration. We was very kind and we saw him every day, greeting people and making sure everything was ok with us. His service and kindness was fantastic.

At the main entrance of the hotel there is a table with lots of restaurant names and their menus to choose from. The front desk will help with reservation.

Diving is awesome you will enjoy lots of colorful fishes.

There is a rental car (Budget) inside the hotel which was really good.

Around the hotel:

Not very nice since there are unfinished houses. But within a block, you will find 5 or 6 great restaurants that you must visit. Reservation is recommended. We went to Rozendaels and Fishalicious and there were fantastic. We also went to Dal Toro, an Italian restaurant in Willemstand, tables are right next to the ocean. Excellent as well.

Curazao was expensive for us (we are from Latin America), I don´t know if for other tourists would be the same as there is a lot of people from Europe. Weather is absolutely fantastic as there is some wind which make sunny days even better. You can drink the water from the sink as Curacao has a water treatment plant!

About service:

The service is average. Sometimes is good, sometimes is just ok. You have to be patient and ask sometimes two or three times for what you need. It is just the way it is in the Caribbean, they have no hurry, no worries.
Food is always fresh so be prepared to wait up to one hour for your main course. But it will be worth.

In general, I would highly recommend the hotel, as it has lots of advantages, conveniently located, two small beaches right inside the hotel a few steps from your room, parking, wi fi, nice people around, rental car, great breakfast buffet, nice beach bar….and fantastic service from general manager.

Room Tip: Blues wing must have a great ocean view, but I don´t know the rooms. The rooms at Belle Alliance wer...

My husband and I booked a room here with our friends for our annual Thanksgiving trip. We all reserved rooms in the Blues Wing well in advance. We flew from Los Angeles - which took us the entire day to get to Curacao.

We arrived at the hotel and were not met by a valet or a bellman. The exterior is worn. We dragged our bags up the stairs and were checked in rather quickly. I asked if we had the king bed we requested and were told yes. We went to the room they gave us only to find that they had put is in the newer wing, not the Blues Wing we requested (and of course didn't mention this at check-in). Our room was facing the parking lot. It was like a cold, basic, business-like room. Not where you want to stay in the Caribbean on holiday. I called the front desk and was told somebody would call us back. The staff that called me back told me that this was an "upgrade" and they wanted to "surprise us." I told her we just wanted the room that we booked and not this surprise. She said they didn't have any of those rooms available and that "everything would look better in the light of day!" I told her we had traveled over 12 hours and were not going to start our vacation like this. She said she would call us back. This went on for well an hour. I had to keep calling back. Finally, she said she "found" us a room in the Blues Wing. We walked over to check it out and honestly were too fed up to argue. The room was like a dated cabin. It smells musty and moldy. The bedding is old and worn. There appears to be dry rot on the wooden deck. The bathroom smelled foul like there's something wrong with the pipes and lthe toilet wouldn't flush properly. The shower curtain was moldy and the tub was just plain disgusting - so much for the whirlpool bath I was envisioning. We were woken up the next am by our neighbors obviously engaging in LOUD sexual relations and banging against the wall. The walls are paper thin! You can hear everything!!! Honestly I was surprised that anybody could give this place anything above 2/3 stars. It is NOT a 5 star luxury hotel. Not even close! The Blues Wing rooms could be fantastic, but are in desparate need of updating.

We utilized the small beach area the next day. The chairs are hard, uncomfortable plastic. There are dirty glasses, dishes and towels laying around. We looked for a waiter to order a drink for over two hours - nada. We finally went to the bar and ordered it ourselves. There is a large drinking water cooler outside that sat there empty for hours (I asked them repeatedly to refill it).The sea is beautiful and the snorkeling is decent right off-shore. It does have that going for it. The restaurant is average and very expensive. There are better places to go to in town.

Our friends arrived and we were stunned to find out that they tried to do the exact same thing to them that they did to us. They even put them in the SAME room they tried to put us in. They told them there were no Blues Wings rooms available and that this was an "upgrade." They were upset and said they wanted what they booked and paid for. The "manager" on duty that night was quite rude and said she wasn't going to "take this" from any guests! I fiind it odd that she was saying that when we were treated in the same unprofessional, rude manner. She told them she had nothing and they would have to stay in that "upgraded" room for the night and she would see about moving them in the am. She stood in the lobby area and yelled at them and said "what am I supposed to do when I don't have the room?" She was very unprofessional. We all travel a lot together and this was one of the worst experiences we've all had at a hotel.

In the am, the real manager appeared and we found out that there had been a vacant Blues Wing room available the night before! In fact, it was right next to ours! I don't know what is going on at Avila, but it's as if nobody has a clue how to operate a hotel or treat guests. Our friends had enough and checked out. We were also fed up and checked out as well. I couldn't imagine spending another night there, much less a week. We were all treated horribly and spent a lot of money to get to Curacao. This is not how to treat guests. Period.

As it turned out, this ruined three days of our vacation because we had to move hotels several times because there was nothing available on the island due to the Thanksgiving holiday. This cost us time/money/energy on what was a much needed vacation.

Avoid Avila. It is NOT what it appears to be in the photos! I rarely leave negative reviews, but don't want somebody else to go through the same experience we all did!

AvilaRep, Manager at Avila Beach Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded January 14, 2013

We thank the guest for taking the time in posting her review as it serves as a classic example why we appreciate that guest provide the hotel with accurate information when making a reservation as well taking the advice given by our friendly and helpful representative on our toll-free number. We want our valued guest to be happy and will always be upfront and truthful on what the possibilities are for specific room requests, etc.
The reviewer was personally informed over the phone prior to making her reservation that the Blues Wing rooms were sold out 3 weeks out from their scheduled arrival. This information came directly from a review of the hotel’s internal reservations system while on the phone with the guest. Yet, after hanging-up, the guest proceeds to make an online reservation for a Blues Wing room with 2 queen beds (this happened minutes before we could close out the inventory on the booking engine) and demanded in the additional information field stating that since it was her honeymoon, we had to assign a Blues Wing with a king bed. The guest was contacted by phone again and informed that, with some creative re-shuffling by our rooms division manager, we would be able to provide her with a Blues wing room with 2 double beds only. Again the guest reiterated that it was her honeymoon and that she would take her chances that someone cancels. There was no mention at any time during the booking process of this being an annual thanksgiving trip as indicated in the review. Nor was there mention that the reviewer was traveling with friends so we could not make a connection.
Since the reviewer indicated that she was on her honeymoon, the reservations manager wanted to make sure that they would get a very nice room with a king bed on the day of arrival. Octagon Deluxe room 216 was assigned as a complimentary upgrade. The Octagon Deluxe rooms are the top-of-the line rooms at the hotel and none face a parking lot as claimed by the reviewer. As a matter of fact, room 216 is one of our nicest ones, overlooking the pool and the Caribbean Sea behind it.

We sincerely regret that the reviewer did not enjoy her stay with us. Had the reviewer taken our advice and also not insisted on a honeymoon status, this change of room types would not have happened.

Came to this hotel for my honeymoon and it was an experience. First let me say that the hotel itself is beautiful and the staff is extremely friendly. However, I booked this room 6 months early in the Blues Wing but upon arriving to our room my new husband and i happened upon two queen beds. Not quite what we ordered for our honeymoon room. Unfortunately there was no room comparable to what we had and were forced to stay where we were which turned out to be a great decision. If staying in the Blues Wing try to get a room that faces away from the hotel beach and out to the ocean. Every night was a beautiful sunset. The food in all the restaurants was amazing and the bar had a nice array of local drinks and ethnic foods to try. Though a little pricey, I was more than satisfied with every meal. The hotel is also close enough to Willemstad and near by restaurants if you feel like leaving the resort for dinner.

Room Tip: The Blues Wing is great if you face away from the hotel.

We stayed here from Nov 30th until Dec. 8th. Check in was a breeze. Our room was #283 by the ocean in the Blues section. The room was clean and bright and always kept at tip top shape. Plenty of towels and pillows. Small refigerator for our needs. Balcony was terrific! We spent many early morning hours and late evening 'sun set' time just relaxing and listening to the waves. The two beaches are kept tip top clean of any debris. Snorkling is right off the beach, no need to go wondering off anywhere else. All the time we were there neither beach was crowded and room, always, for all who came. Bar service was superb. Drinks were pretty good. Breakfast buffet has a great variety. A bit pricey at about 17$ per person, but all in all we used it more than not. Lunch is good, specifically the salmon sandwich. So why 4 instead of 5 stars?
Here is why. We had dinner once at the Belle Terrace and once at the Blues. Dinner (Belle Terrace) is quite pricey and a bit lacking in quantity. The service is superb. Don't get me wrong, the quality (taste) is certainly there, but we left hungry to be honest. I would suggest the management add salads and bread to every meal. The dessert was a tad skimpy.
Dinner at the Blues was a bit better in quantity, but not as good as the Belle in quality. They have a dish called 'something Tapas' I forget the exact name. Having spent time in Spain I can tell you these are not Spain style tapas.... close, but no cigar! Still they were not bad at all.
Margaritas at the beach were great, but not at the Blues. All other drinks were great. Mojitos were too expensive at $12 dollars (ouch!).
Would we go back? Hands down 'You Bet'! Place is terrific and would gain 5 stars from us if they only upped the food quantity a bit more for Dinner, all other meals were just fine.

The location is perfect...20 minutes from downtown...steps away from nice restaurants. walking downtown may spook you as there a few abandoned houses along the way. We walked it day or night and had no problems... Natives are quite friendly and I spoke with them frequently (I am fluent in spanish...and they in quite few languages).
