“The best place to stay on Curacao!”
Reviewed August 15, 2011

From the welcome juice cocktail we received when we checked in to the Avila to the romantic dinner we were served on the beach for our anniversary, our stay here was near perfection. The desk staff was always friendly and helpful. The hotel is beautiful. If you want a rustic, breezy room, stay in the Blues wing... something more modern? Stay in the Octagon wing.

Our room was located in the Octagon wing. The room had a small, well equipped kitchen area and the bedroom was fantastic. The bed was firm and the pillows were nice.
If you are interested in being "green" --when you open the sliding door sit out on the balcony, the air conditioning shuts off---BUT when you come back in and shut the door, the air starts right back up. I liked that I did not have to make any adjustment at night. We could just throw open the balcony doors when we went to bed to catch the ocean breezes, but if it was too warm, we just closed the door and the air started up again. Very comfortable and ecologically friendly!

Good food choices. Food is available at their fine restaurant in the evening, another restaurant is open during most of the day with a good selection of foods, along with food at 2 bar areas. Then there is the Blues Bar/Restaurant... great entertainment, very good food choices, nice sunset spot, and (for whatever reason) the best food and liquor prices in the complex. If you don't want to go down for breakfast (about $18) the room service breakfast choice is only $11 and is an adequate and good start to one's day.

For our anniversary we reserved a date for a dinner on the beach. A table and chairs was set up for us. We selected the chef's "surprise" menu. Before dinner we were asked a few details about food choices, wellness of meats, alergies, etc. Then the night of the dinner we were served a 3 course dinner by our private server. The table was lit by torches on the beach and a candle on our table. Only one such dinner is served each night, so make sure to make your reservations as soon as possible after you arrive!

The beach is nice, the water warm and protected. They do have a pool, not terribly large, but we never saw that it was overcrowded. If you need towels and no one is at the towel location... ask at the nearest bar. They are locked in a cabinet until handed out. The attendant hands them out, but also seems to be responsible for taking the cart of used towel to be laundered and bringing back new, clean ones--so is not always right at the towel area near the Blues bar.
Their website gives a great description. They are very responsive to emails with questions and also have an "800" toll free number you can call in the USA.

We stayed for 4 nights;did not want to leave! It was beautiful, romantic, and a fantastic location. Would stay there again and highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Octagon for elegant comfort--Blues Wing for ocean breezes, sunsets, & rustic charm.

We stayed at the Avila for a few days from Friday through Tuesday, at the beginning of this month. We live in the Northern Leeward Islands and came with high expectations as that is a desired part of the Caribbean as well. The hotel has a warm elegant and casual feeling to it. We had the opportunity to stay in the (newer) Octagon Wing. A very spacious open plan room with frosted glass, big sliding doors and a beautiful view of the ocean. The room was clean, well presented and centrally situated on the complex. We had breakfast every day at the Avila Cafe which was delicious, fresh and a great variety of fresh, cold and hot foods. We can recommend the cooked to order omelette by the friendly staff. Lunch was shared between the Schooner and Pool Bar. The Schooner Bar is on the beach, comfortable and has seating other then at the bar, also around with comfortable cushions. The Pool Bar was our favourite for lunch and comes with a chef who prepares the food in front of you, "Ella's" lamb pita is excellent. For dinner you can go to the Blues Restaurant and the Belle Terrace. Blues has live music on certain days and is casual dining accompanied with great music and views of the bay and hotel. Belle terrace is a more fine dining setting, with a choice of great wines and varied selection of fish and meat dishes. On the hotel complex there are coffee shops and nice little boutique shops. The Octagon museum and art gallery give the hotel a very nice feeling and reminds you of the "old" days and heritage of Avila . We will certainly return!

Room Tip: We had room 315 (Octagon Wing) and loved it

My father, brother, friends and I stayed at the Avila last month and had a terrific time. The grounds are well kept and the accommodations are modern and very comfortable. Free internet everywhere, in the room as well as at the bars and open areas on the property. We spent quite some time on their beach, but also saw a lot of the island. Due to its central location it was easy to take trips to all sights on the island. we swam with the dolphins, and took a submarine ride, the latest attraction in Curacao! At night there are lots of different theme nights, but the most special evening is the Thursday night Blues happy hour, with live Blues and jazz music it's a must! And the burgers are to die for!! Definitely a worthwhile and fun vacation!!!;

Avila Beach Hotel has a perfect location, but the overall impression is destroyed by the uncommited staff. I.e the TV was not working, sun chair cushion was missing, the staff promise to fix it right away, I even gave a lot of tip, but it was never fixed. The front desk forgets things you ask them for. The top management was ok and gave us a free night due to the problems, but hence it was our honeymoon I didn't care about the money, I was hoping for top service. But the food was really good, especially at the Pool bar which also was the single place in Avila where they had super service. It was run by to middle aged women who seemed commited to provide the guest with great service.

Room Tip: Ask for room 290 in the blues wing (the TV annd cushion is probably still missing, but it's a gr...

One night we had dinner under the stars
and a man from another table introduced himself
and started singing spanish love songs to us .
The next day we were having lunch and an iguana dropped out of a tree
and we took great pictures of him.
Great snorkeling, lots of tropical fish and coral, right off the beach.
They had four restaurants and the food was great .
We stayed in the most romantic suite on the beach.
We will definitly be back

One of the worst hotels you could ever stay out. Rude staff, LOUD when you're trying to relax and dirty rooms. Stay some place else you'll be glad you did.

We just spent a week at Avila Hotel in Curacao and what a week it was! From the moment we arrived on the island we sensed that we were in a friendly place. That feeling was based on the warm greeting and pleasant ride from the airport to the hotel. Upon arriving at the hotel, we met Daniel who checked us in - he was sincere, caring and friendly. We hadn’t even stepped in our room yet and we knew we had made a good choice. And as it turns out, we didn’t make a good choice, we had made a great choice - Curacao is a very friendly island and Avila Hotel is simply a cut above. So the question begs – what about the hotel was so pleasing? Avila Hotel is a family owned business (we learned this on the last day as we awaited our ride to the airport) and that it explains it all. Everyone that we had contact with at the hotel was just so warm and friendly – they understood that our week at their hotel was our week away from the rat race – the rat race that is the reality for so many of us. The front desk associates, the restaurant wait staff, the barkeepers, the chefs, the house keepers, the bell staff, the managers…all were so accommodating. You really felt as though you were a guest in their house. We wish we could recall all of their names – they certainly remembered ours – but we can recall a few of the great folks at Avila Hotel: there was Daniel, Fiona, Gregory, Levi, Sue, Rikhart, Christopher, Jennifer, Tone and many others…

Then there is the hotel itself and its location. The hotel was once the residence of the governor which in and of itself is a pretty neat thing. The property is beautifully landscaped and there are two great (small)beaches that are separated by a (seemingly)manmade barrier that houses one of the restaurants (Blues) which overlooks the water – one real calm and the other a bit more active due to the trade winds, but hardly ‘rough seas’. There’s snorkeling at both beaches…great scenery, and sun tanning….a great place to rest, read a book, work on your strokes or just wade in the water. And there’s also a great ’infinity’ pool. The calm beach and the pool are ideal for families who have young children…and there were a number of adorable young families there; but that shouldn’t deter couples who are looking for romantic getaway. There are a number of restaurants and bars on premise and you can have whatever experience you are looking for. There’s also a local coffee shop that served light fare and that was great to have. About 100 yards from the coffee shop is the Octagon Museum which recounts the history of Simon Bolivar – who wouldn’t want to enhance their knowledge of South American history while at a luxury hotel?

With regard to the location, we were a short 15 minute walk into town where there are shops, museums, restaurants, etc…but of more significance is the proximity of the hotel to about a half a dozen good restaurants. Within about 200-300 yards of the front door of the hotel, you have the choice of seafood, Italian, Japanese, International, etc…and they are quite good.

We can continue to laud the Avila Hotel because our experience was that good. We strongly recommend Avila Hotel!!!

Room Tip: We would recommend the Octagon Deluxe Rooms. We had a wonderful view of both the sea and the pool!
