We stayed at Kontiki Beach and Dive Resort June 13th - June 20th 2009. Would we stay there again? NO.

Firstly, I'm not sure why it's called a Dive resort, besides the fact that there's an Ocean Encounters Satellite shop a few steps away. I guess we expected it to cater a little more to divers, with maybe someplace to hang wetsuits to dry for starters. We used the handles on the windows in the bathroom which did work. And there's really no place to put you're clothes so we just went out of our suitcase all week. There are hangers and a few shelves, but that's it (two or three shelves above the small fridge and safe and one shelf above the area to hang clothes). No place to sit in the room other than the bed (and single chair at small desk), or bring in the chairs off the balcony.

I was unable to find any decent reviews in English of Kontiki online so I knew we were taking a chance. It is still under construction somewhat but that really didn't matter since we were on the opposite side with an ocean view.

The bed was pretty comfortable, however it was actually two double or single mattresses pushed together on a King sized frame. So there was the infamous "crack" one of us ended up dealing with in the middle. The AC worked really good and there was wi-fi access in the room.

This place was just not for us. If you want quiet and peaceful, this is not the place. Which seems sort of like a contradiction since they advertise as Eco-Friendly and green and the Guest Manual even has a loud music policy. I had read a few reviews that talked about the loud music from the disco club or whatever next door on the weekends, but during our week stay, 5 out of the 7 nights were just frustrating to put it nicely. If I remember correctly, the only nights there was no music playing (either at the disco club or the Cabana Beach Restaurant just below the resort) was Tuesday and Thursday nights. Granted our room was right above the Cabana Beach club, but the base from the speakers there and next door made it impossible to not hear or feel the sound. They're both popular night spots for locals.

We requested an ocean view room, which is basically their room "closest" to the ocean...which you can see. However, between the resort and the ocean is Cabana Beach Club. A fairly nice restaurant and bar. They had live music from what I remember, Sat(or Sun), Wednesday, and Friday. The guy playing piano and singing was great, we really enjoyed him... the first time. But our room was directly behind the restaurant (which when sitting on the balcony you get the nice sound of air conditioner fans and compressors on the back side of the restaurant) so the music from the Cabana Club carried right into our room. And then the base from the club next door that rattled our windows until 3 or 4 a.m on Saturday and Sunday. Earplugs and/or iPod and head under pillow didn't work.

The Kontiki staff was really nice however. They did cover our room and bathtub with Bougainvillea petals when we arrived since we told them it was our honeymoon. Nice gesture but what a mess! We called up one night to see if they could have the Cabana Club turn their music down, they said they would. 15 minutes later it got louder. No kidding. I'm not saying it was Kontiki's fault. It really seems like they have little control since it is a separate business. The problem is they're two different businesses and we realize they really have separate business models so we understood. Finally that night my wife and I went down and listened for a while on the beach and before returning to our room, my wife just went up and asked the DJ to turn the music down. Which he did.

If you like to party, this place is great! We don't so it wasn't for us. We're very laid back however and pretty much have fun where ever we are. And we were there to dive and relax. The diving was great and we took plenty of naps in the afternoons.

Next to the last night we walked all the way down the boardwalk next to the beach and found Hemingway Beach Bar and Restaurant at Lions Dive & Beach Resort. Great restaurant and really reasonable prices. I had the most expensive entree the Ribeye (ala carte fries) and my wife had a pasta, and side salad, with desert and a virgin colada all for less then $70 with 18% tip. The next night our bill was under $62 for both. For the atmosphere and food quality that's a great price! The crowd at Lions Dive seemed a lot more our pace. We'll stay there if we return. Lion's Dive seemed a lot nicer than the impression I got from my web research. Great (and more private) beach and obviously geared more towards divers.

We had a rental car all week and toured the island and the Punta shopping district which was pretty cool. But mostly, we were there to dive and relax. When were got back we were covered with Mosquito bites from our last night there. We forgot to use the insect repellent we purchased at the market about a mile away. (They offer mosquito repellent at the resort for $10 USD but we found a smaller can at the market down the road for half the price). We also were fighting ants all week which were often found crawling on me while sitting in bed reading. I think they hitched a ride on me from the balcony. They were in the sink area in bathroom also. No big deal really, just small ants... but I guess if you hate ants it would be bad.

Conclusion
Rooms, nice but more place for clothes and sitting would be good.
Bad if you like peace and quite, good if you like to party.

Oh, and I have to plug The Dive Bus if you're going to dive while in Curacao (the-dive-bus.com). Great, great outfit for awesome shore diving!

getting over the initial impression of a construction site, and the make shift reception, we had a lovely garden view room facing the swimming.. really beautiful until you see the dirty bathroom floor. We stayed for 7 nights and the same floor stains (from previous guests) were still there each day even after the daily room 'clean' . needless to say, you need to wear footwear at all times.
Night came with the cockroaches, in our room..
reception are kind enough to charge you 20 dollars for some spray that might keep the cockroaches away.
The mini bar is empty and well there is no where to buy drinks other than the over priced nearby bar (which is not part of the hotel) After a 10 hour flight, we really needed something to drink so we headed to the bar. First evening was lovely even with the cokroaches between our feet and two large rats were regulars on the beach side of the bar..
For a security deposit of 50 dollars a night, you can have a guest card and charge food and beverage from the local bar .. not a very friendly service really considering the hotel offers nothing but a room and a change of towels each day...
There was a bus service from the reception to a local supermarket so we stocked up on water on day 2.
Breakfast is at the nearby bar - have to say this is an excellent breakfast with fresh fruits, jucies and more.
reception staff are very friendly and helpful so the stay wasn't unpleasant. Curacao is nice, rent a car and go around the island. some lovely little beaches in westpunt.
sailing trip was also great to 'cast-away' island.

Would i go again? Thats a definite NO but I think once they finish the resort, improve the cleaning, close the gaps on the doors so the cockroaches stay out and offer some services then it will be a nice place to stay. The rooms are very beautiful and the wood is gorgeous but sadly not enough to persuade me to go back.
