“Great home base for exploring Curaçao.”
Reviewed December 16, 2013 via mobile

The staff here are courteous and will go out of their way to help you. There's a casino, if you. Like that. More importantly, this is a great central location from which to set up tours for the points of interest on the island. Do go snorkeling or diving while you are here. Do take a walking tour across the floating bridge. Do tour the Hato Caves. The Renaissance is your best home away from home.

This hotel is in walking distance to old town Williamstaad. There are many shops and good restaurants close by. The pool area is superb although there is no real beach that allows access to the ocean.

My wife, son and I stayed at the Renaissance Hotel for two nights. It was a very last minute reservation as we were supposed to stay at the Marriott for 4 nights but checked out after 2 nights ( see review).

What a relieve! After a very disappointing experience at the Marriott Curacao we felt at home as soon as we entered the door. We were happy to learn that the standard of the Marriott is not exemplary for what other hotels on the island have to offer.

The hotel is not top notch but has all you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Rooms with comfy beds, friendly staff throughout, very nice pool area complemented with good food and a central location.

Cost of breakfast is a bit steep but there's a Starbucks on the premises for coffee and a sandwich or muffin.

Definitely the best option in Willemstad at this moment.

This is a nice Marriott family hotel, the pool/artificial beach area are very nice and you'll enjoy it even if you prefer the real beach. I think is a hotel more for business users because of its location and some specific services. Food in premises are mostly expensive (specially the breakfast). Try this one if you prefer to be on a walking distance from Willemstad and if a pool could be enough. If you are looking for beaches and other related experiences this may be not the best option.

Stayed there from Nov 10-17. We flew with WestJet as well, the entertainment system was out on the way in, and the check-in at the way-out was chaotic. I am not sure why Westjet is so disappointing.
The hotel is nicely located, $30 USD of cab from the airport, with walking distance to the downtown area. There are plenty of shops around the hotel for shopping therapy, but most of them are cruise tourist traps (i.e. shops selling Tanzanites and other "rare" semi-precious stones that are not rare back home)

The hotel is a bit old in terms of decor and maintenance is a bit sub par (they need to paint it more often). However, they got AVEDA products in the bathroom, and their pools (one fake infinity beach and one fresh water pool) are amazing! The free coffee in the room (some famous chef brand) tastes disgusting, maybe it is because they got a Starbuck inside of their hotel, so they need to make the free one in the room so gross to force people to go to Starbucks. WIFI is also free near the Starbuck and at the pool area.

The service at the hotel was fine, the size of our room was also decent, not big, not too small, but the noise level is high at our room (city-view/ back alley view), there were always drums noise at night until 10pm.

Overall, the experience was good, and we will stay there again.

We really like Marriott hotels. We have stayed in Marriott-brand hotels in across the Americas, Europe and Asia in several cities. The reason for our preference is because they are "normally" consistent in the great service delivery.

Well, "normally" because our experience at the Marriott Renaissance in Curaçao was an exception and in general a disappointment.

The good:
- Rooms were spacious and house keeping did an acceptable job.
- Infinity pool / artificial beach was a nice place to hang out with family and kids.
- Location was good: walking distance to certain attractions and decent restaurants in Otrobanda.
- Friendly bell staff.

The Bad:
- Terrible room service: we needed room service twice (the first time upon arrival in our first night: needed a glass of milk for our 1 year old). We had to call 3x and it took 30+ minutes (yes, for a glass of milk). We had to call twice the second time, which took also too long.
- No Wi-Fi in the rooms: there was no Wi-Fi available at the rooms. For a Renaissance hotel, this is hard to understand. I had to go to the lobby, but signal there was extremely poor and the smell of cigarette smoke sucked. So, I went to the Starbucks inside the hotel on the second floor. Note that in case they are closed, you gotta make yourself comfortable with the others sitting on the hallway floor in front of someone's room if you need to use the internet.
- No working wired internet in the rooms: yep, there was no Wi-Fi AND the wired internet was not working in the rooms either (plural: we had 2 couples in 2 rooms, no internet in either room).
- Fridge in the room was miniscule.
- Prices were exorbitant. E.g.: USD 7 bucks (after 15% service charge and tax) for a small-size Heineken can at the pool.
- Cigarette smoke: if you have an issue with cigarette smoke, don't hang out at the lobby, restaurant or bar (smoke from the casino infects the entrance; but it is a casino, so likely it will stay that way). Nevertheless, at least the upper floors and rooms (at least ours) did NOT smell like cigarette smoke.

The Ugly (part 1):
-> Background: the hotel management informed the guests (a few nights in advance) that the hotel would lose power from 5am to 12am because of electrical work to be performed by the city on the street. Until this point, we thought "Ok, oh well, let's make it an early morning and hit the beaches".
- Here was what happened: in the morning of the scheduled maintenance, the hotel's fire alarm went off sometime before 4:00am for over a minute. I called the front desk immediately to find out if it was a true alarm or not. They said it was just a brief issue with the system. Alarm was shut off.
... 5 minutes later, it screamed again for 10 secs, together with our baby (who kept screaming longer than 10 secs). Alarm was shut off again; we calmed baby down.
... 10-15 mins later, the alarm screams again. And I went downstairs to understand what was happening. The staff was fully incapable of addressing the concern or acting to fix the issue. They blamed the city work, which had not started, by the way, when the alarm started to go off.
... Then it continued: you got the idea: we lost count of the alarm on/off/on fiasco from 4am onwards...
-> Part 2: and by the way, the alarm went off AGAIN, 3am-4am in a subsequent night. No there was no work in the city. No, the front desk could not provide a plausible explanation.
-> Part 3: and if 2 nights it is not enough, in our last night in the hotel, it went off again, before 5am, apparently because the hotel had to shut the power off (again, this time driven by the actual hotel) to do maintenance in the air conditioning system.
--> Part 4 and final: of course, we requested to see a manager and scheduled a face-to-face meeting at the lobby, in a nice sunny beach morning.
... We arrived punctually for the meeting, informed the front desk. We waited for 10 minutes, no manager. Asked the front desk again: "sir, one of the managers is coming". We waited for another 5. No manager. I informed the front desk to call me when a manager decided to show up for the appointment, in case we were still around for the meeting. They called 20 minutes late and "a" manager saw us.
--> The verdict: "a" manager gave us a nominal discount in the nightly rate.

In fact, after several days at the hotel and following the alarm fiasco, we looked at other options. We were very close to cancelling our stay at the Renaissance in the middle of the trip, which did not happen simply because we could not find last-minute availability in another place we actually had selected as an option when planning the trip (irony: we did not pick the other place because we preferred to "trust" the Marriott quality).

In short, I would not return to this Marriott nor would recommend it to anyone.
