“One Day Stay / Layover”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

We had a 24 hour delay. After staying at Riu for a week I wanted to compare a few things.
The staff for this one day were so awesome. Always providing great service with a smile. The resort itself looked really nice....did not make it to beach. The room was clean and ok. The bathroom was a bit dated.
Food at buffet was great with a huge selection. I was surprised after staying at a 5 star and this being a 4. Food was better here for that day anyway!

:)

Please do not listen to the bad reviews , I do not have one bad thing to say about this resort . Rooms were fine not high class as people seem to be expecting but very roomy , comfortable and spotless. The showers were always hot and lots of pressure. Stayed fron Feb 20 -27th . Food was quite good as well . You have to be some one who has a silver spoon in ther mouth to not find something to eat . Lots of variety and always hot .( get ther at a decent time for the variety not 30 min before closing )The beach was georgous ,had no problems getting a palapa except for 1 day and that was because we were late going ....
the Cuban people are very respectable ,not that I can say that much about a few of the guests there,it is them who throw garbage around and put butts out everywhere not the Cubans. The air conditioner in our room was the best , quiet and working well.By the way we "always" had TP in the bathroom ....The entertainment was very good ,even enjoyed the children doing their entertainment ...no complaints about anything.

Room Tip: we were in block 21 ,across from the quiet pool , close too main lobby and buffet . 10 min wal or 5...

I just got back yesterday from my trip so while it is still fresh in my mind...............Over all this was a good resort. Some ppl are saying they saw a lot of garbage around. Well the garbage I saw was from the tourist. And it was generally picked up within the day. Our room was clean. The resort was clean. Always had toilet paper. Food was average but what do you expect from CUBA really? Oh and bring your own tea & spices because they lack in that department. They have salt & pepper and their version of catchup. Very little mustard and no relish! Cuba has wonderful beaches. For the most part the ppl were friendly. I would say if the resort is a rated as a 5 star then expect it to be 3 & 1/2 star in comparison to a Canadian resort. 3 & 1/2 star is very good in Cuba. Besides, I know if you are going to Cuba it is for the beach and tourism. The tourist trips are wonderful! The catamaran trip with the dolphins was a terrific experience which will cost you $109.00 plus add on about 20 for tips or pictures or other expenses. Tips are an important part of the Cubans so that is where most of your money will go. Be sure to have a five dollar Canadian bill on you when you arrive because that is a tip for the bus driver to take you to your resort. That is what is suggested. Now you do not have to tip but like I said it is expected. Oh and the exchange of Canadian to CUC you will get less CUC for Canadian. That I was surprised at! Not much less but less. Be sure to have a tip for the washrooms if you travel to town. The tipping of the maids helps you get better service. And whatever you do do not loose the beach towel they supply you because the will cost you 25 CUC when you leave. They stress that a lot. It was a wonderful resort. Expect delays because you are on Cuban time. Just enjoy the ride!

Room Tip: The rooms on the north side are cooler. I was told that if they are by the tennis court you will be...

This hotel was a great place to stay. Don't go by any bad reviews of the place. The room was nice, the food good, entertainment was awesome and the people very friendly. There is a great deal of walking but if you don't like to walk you can always catch a ride on one of the many golf carts that are being driven around by workers. I would definately stay again.

We took my Mom on her first trip to Cuba after a rough 2 years and she said it was a trip of a lifetime! The food was great and the property was beautiful. As usual the Cuban people were absolutely wonderful. We took the diamond club option and it was well worth it with all the little perks. Especially booking the restaurants! We don't usually return to the same resorts but looks like next year we will with our teenagers. They will love it!

Don't read the bad reviews about this hotel ... they are wrong. My husband and I stayed at Memories from Feb 21 to 28, 2013. We had actually stayed here last year - February 23, 2012 when it was still Sirenis la Salinas. This time was even better than last. The food was good... not great, but you certainly won't starve. They have omelette bars and bacon and toast and lots of cereal and fruit for breakfast, great lunch buffet with salads, fish and cuban dishes and great suppers including bbq shrimp, fish, chicken and pasta bars with garlic and parsley. Lots of desserts and icecream too... Lots to eat.... if you walk away hungry it is your own fault. The resort is huge with lots of walking; which was fine for us. We stayed in 32 section. This time we spent most of our time at the beach. We had great weather 30+ everyday we were there except for the 28th - when it rained for about 1/2 hour and then the sun came back out again. Waves were high and we needed to be careful on our last day, but it was beautiful to wade in the water. A la Cartes were good. Japenese is great. go there if you can. Our room was great and the booze and coffee was good also. Not sure why people are complaining, we had a wonderful time. Oh and by the way, we had diamond club. Would highly recommend it. Allows you to keep your room til 4pm on the day you check out; otherwise you have to be out by 12 noon; or pay 10 pesos for every hour you want to keep the room. Diamond Club also gave you access to better quality liquor and the waiters were always there making sure we were ok or asking if we needed a drink. Diamond Club also gave you access to beach area with a private bar tender that waited on you while you sat in your lawn chairs. What more do people want. We had a great time. Where else can you go where you buy plane ticket, hotel room all you can eat and drink for $1200? It was a great hotel and would definitely book it again.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in 32, 32 or 34 if you want to be by the beach.

Stayed at this resort Feb 21 - Feb 28 with my 15yr old daughter, my aunt and cousin with her two teenage boys. We all enjoyed a great time and would travel back again. My daughter is a picky eater, and she ate more at the resort than at home sometimes. Our favorite booked restaurant was the Japanese (which we booked the 2nd day there and got one of the last reservations) so you really should find and book on your arrival day. I don't swim much at home as I don't like cold water, but I swam in the ocean and in the pool on many occasions. Get your spot by the activity pool or ocean by 9:30 - 10:00 am and you should be fine. It did fill up at the pool by then. Very friendly staff and only a peco left each day in the room with some items they cant get in cuba like crayons, pencils, notebook, nail polish, chocolate etc.. Took the jeep tour and catamaran trip to see dolphins and very much enjoyed. Children along the jeep tour out of the City of Varadero would have liked some trinkets which we did not bring along. We did not find the walking distance that bad, but do wear comfortable sandals... we stayed in 40 area midway to main buffet and theater.. Very reasonable price paid for a wonderful time in the sun for a full week.

Room Tip: stayed in 40 unit midway to buffet and activity pool
