“What a great plant!”
Review of Cactus Patriarch

Cactus Patriarch
Reviewed December 2, 2012

For a biologist it is really a special moment to be able to witness something so spectacular and extraordinary as Cactus Patriarch. This specimen is 500 years old and is about 7 meters high, his roots are about the same long. I am really afraid it could be his last days, as there is new horrible hotel opened next to it. Cubans let investors ruin their natural treasures. There will be nothing interesting in Varadero soon after El Patriarca collapses. Shame

This cactus is quite the historically significant plant, however it is plunked in the midst of a shrinking, somewhat unkempt 'trail' that you might walk past and completely miss near the far end of Varadero beach. It is within walking distance of our hotel (Iberostar Laguna Azul), and worth seeing, but keep your expectations low regarding the 'park' it calls home.

To sense the time that this cactus has lived through is part of overall Cuban experience as the island is saturated with history if you are interested to discover.
At the same time this place is squeezed by the surrounding construction of the new hotel complex that is named after this cactus - El Patriarca!

It is a big cactus. We weren't very impressed. If you like cactuses you may feel differently.

We were walking on the beach to the west from Iberostar Laguna Azul when stumbled upon this huge cactus. You can see it from the beach, above the front row of small trees. Cactus is between Sirenis la Salina hotel and a new hotel that is being constructed. Cactus is slightly on the left from the new one. Shoes/slippers are suggested for access.
