The service at this hotel is awesome, that is what makes this place great. They have a large pool which is never crowded, and their portion of the beach is great. The actual hotel is big but if you like nighttime walking on the grounds, there isn't a lot of outdoor pathways etc... That being said the beach walking is great during the day. They are very generous with their alcohol which is great because some resorts water down their drinks. Food is awesome lots to eat and it tastes great. The breads and banana cake is to die for. We are vegan and we always found lots to eat. There is a lot to do around the hotel. For $5 you can ride the double decker buses all day long. For $10 you can ride a classic car into varadero (good option if you have more than three people - cheaper than everyone going on a double decker). Bat caves close by. You will have fun!

Just came back last Monday from Varadero, Cuba and we stayed at the Blau Varadero. I need to say that we will go back to Varadero and it will be the Blau for sure. This place is a must. I don't know where to start. The hotel is beautiful. The view from the lobby looking up is breath taking and even if we took pictures of it, no picture can give justice to that architectural beauty.

The staff everywhere at that hotel will go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay.

The Buffet for Breakast, lunch and dinner is great with so much variety that you don't know what to pick. We actually had only one lunch there because you can get great snacks beside the pool and at the Beach Bar restaurant. Try their grilled cheese sandwiches with or without ham. It's decadent. So the food, it was delicious.

I'm also a coffee lover. If you want a great coffee or capuccino, go in the hotel bar/lounge or at the pool bar. These are the best places for coffee. The coffee at the main restaurant is not very good but who cares, so many alternatives. So many choices.

The 2 "à la carte" restaurants were very good, with a plus for the "Palm Real". My husband and I were there with our two grown up boys and 2 of their friends, so they had their room. We also celebrate both our Birthdays at the Blau. Being 1 day apart, we reserved the "à la carte" restaurant for both our Birthdays and they made sure to bring a cake at both of the restaurants. We thought it was very nice of them.

The beach is awesome and there is enough chairs for everyone and a lot of palapas to be in the shade. I would suggest that you go before noon if you want a palapa. The weather was great during all our stay but the sun is hot and a bit of shade is welcome.

The pool area is again beautiful with everything you need from bar, snacks, Entertainment in the afternoon and you can go for archery when the guy comes and say out loud "archery!". If you stay at the pool, you don't even have to move from your chair if you want a drink, a server is going around with a chariot that has all you want to serve you your favorite drink. If not, he will go and get it for you.

Also, between the pool area and the beach there is another shady area with plenty of chairs and even some hammocks when you want to rest, read a book a bit far from the crowd. They thought of everything.

The evening entertainment is also great. You have a music quizz around 7h30, then you have dancing lessons around 8h30 (they are really fun) and later you have a show provided by the hotel crew. We didn't see all of them because we also liked to hang out at the hotel bar/lounge after supper. They have live music, not too loud so you can talk, a nice breeze from outside caresses you and we played cards, drank and enjoyed ourselves a lot. Around 11h PM, if you like to party, you go hang out at the Beach Bar: nice people, great dancing music and it's open 24/7.
I can't forget the last night we were there, the Entertainment took it outside for the first time in the week to present a Ballet crew who were not the same crew from the hotel and we enjoyed an awesome aquatic ballet in the pool. This was by far my favorite show. It was like seeing a professinal vegas show.

Really, if you get bored at this place, you must be bored in your life ;)

The only thing that I had a little struggle with is the very firm bed. Since I always put pillows Under my knees to help my back, I just asked for more pillows and got used to a firmer bed.

We REALLY loved this place and the staff. We will be back!!!

Room Tip: We had the chance to try both sides (street view and ocean view). They both are good really. The street view still gives you an ocean view but a bit further. Of course the pool/ocean view is nicer. I recommand 8th floor and above but be patient for elevators or take the stairs.

Although not completely open to our American friends as yet, six of us Canadians went to Cuba for the first time.

The Blau resort was very nice with lots of amenities and very pleasant staff who spoke English very well. Service was excellent and if you needed anything, Jose, the Hotel Manager would do his best to please you.

The beaches and grounds were very well maintained. Power boats were not allowed on the beaches.

Not a great place to stay if you want to party however, there was nightly entertainment that was acceptable and a variety of activities around a massive swimming pool during the day. Bars were open late and each room had a mini bar with limited beer.

The water is very clear with a sandy bottom and no seaweed. Snorkling is available and only a short sailboat ride to a nearby reef at a cost of 20 pesos which is close to par with an American and Canadian dollar. Scuba diving lessons are also available.

Many Canadians complain that the food in Cuba is rather bland however, we found that the food and variety at the resort was as good as anywhere I have traveled.

We traveled to Havana via a private taxi as one of our group is handicapped. It cost $40.00 per person plus tip. It was a two hour ride to the City and we went thru new and old Havana which included Revolutionary Square where Castro used to deliver his speeches.

We were taken to a small family operated restaurant in old Havana and had a very pleasant lunch. Four of the six of us had lobster and the total bill including drinks and taxes was $137.00 pesos!

The only major disappointment was departing from Varadero Airport. We stood in various check-in and security lines for over four hours plus a final check-in before we could board the aircraft.

As a result we were delayed an hour and a half before the plane could take-off. Even the pilot was annoyed! We were told that this was an unusual glich however, we are all launching a complaint to our travel service.

Our travel package indicated that that our fee included gratuities but I could not determine if they filtered down to the majority of the employees.

Wages in Cuba are very poor and their cost of living is high. Always make it a point to tip anyone who serves you. We also may it a habit of taking along some things that are not readily available to the the local population such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, pencils, crayons, colouring books and work gloves for the landscapers.

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view make sure you stay on the fifth floor or higher above the tree line. Take bug spray as they have sand fleas.

I was actually at the resort next door, but Blau will be my next stop. Visited a friend and the beach was great, food was good, and the staff are excellent. Very convenient and compact. There are elevators and no effort is spared to make visitors welcome!
