“Fantastic stay!”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

Stayed for a week from Aug.10-17 with family. Let me start off by saying that the Blau Varadero was a delight from beginning to end. From the lovely ocean view to the daily activities to the nightly entertainment. The shows were fantastic, especially the Magic Show and the Celebrity Night. One of the nights consisted of nice party on the beach in which people of all ages kicked off their sandals and danced to modern day music. Our room was clean and well kept daily. The staff were very friendly and inviting and did their best to ensure our stay was a great one. The food was better than expected but nothing ever compares to that homemade meal... There were also two a-la-carte restaurants and we all found the "International Buffet" to be a lot better. The only complaint myself and my family had was the elevators. They were extremely slow and left us having to take the stairs more often then planned. The ocean was a good 5 minute walk from the resort and it was stunning. The pool was nice as well and well kept. My family and I were raving about this vacation from start to finish and we were truly pleased. We look forward to going back soon!

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the back of the building which has a lovely pool and ocean view. Also try not t...

Lovely hotel. Stayed 10 nights on an all inclusive basis. Great clean pools. Perfect service. Food good-impressive choice for Cuba. PERFECT beach. Range of activities and sports included. Good music entertainment. Evening entertainment ok. Great choice in bars. Staff helpful and kind...they do appreciate the tips though! Room decent although slightly dated..not a problem though. Slept well. Interesting architecture of hotel itself. Would recommend and stay again. Walk to dophinarium 15 mins away. You can watch a show for 15CUC -no need to pay for expensive trip. This place is really good especially when you consider that this is Cuba and not 'super advanced' Europe or US etc... A real stress free stay.

This was our first trip to Cuba and we had heard the horror stories for years: bad food, shoddy service, bugs etc. Well the Blau seems to have ignored those reports and truly runs their resort in a very efficient and first class manner. Rooms are large and efficient with working a/c and a mini fridge stocked with beer and sodas . Those craving a fix from home can get HBO or CNN or ESPN.....

The resort has numerous bars and restaurants (some open 24 hours) serving a huge variety of foods so that there is never a sense of running out of ideas. The pool is large and inviting however the poolside lounge chairs get snapped up early as usual. Still there are plenty more around the garden area. We choose the beach after the first day and we never looked back. Numerous thatched roof with loungers just steps away from a fantastic beach/ocean. The resort also offers snorkeling, kayaking, sailing and scuba if you are interested.

There was a good mix of families and couples when we were there and the hotel was 100% when we departed however nowhere did it feel crowded. The entertainment staff always have something going during the day and evening.

The only negative thing we found was the staff at the lobby and pool bars. Service was often times slow and the bartenders were either not interested or simply overworked. Otherwise we found all staff to be friendly and helpful and they all seemed to be enjoying working at the Blau.

We stayed on the 7th floor with an ocean-view and noise was never an issue.

I had read about tipping the maids to get better service.....I did here and we received no bottles of water the next day (we did get creative towel designs on the bed however). Just saying that it may not make a big difference to the service - it was proper regardless. Of course gratuities are always appreciated anywhere in Cuba.

Tips: There is a small trolley-like bus that goes into town. The cost is 4CUC's for all day hop-on/hop-off service. A great way to get away for the day and look for souvenirs (if that is of interest).

For cigar smokers the hotel's shop has a limited selection at inflated prices. There is a Casa de Habana shop in Veradero (around 64th ave.) and while the prices are higher than elsewhere in Cuba the selection is great and it is still cheaper than the Blau.

On check-out day we could not get day-use of our rooms as the hotel was full. They were kind enough to offer luggage storage, use of the showers in the spa and full use of the resort (meals and drinks included). My only suggestion might be to provide more than 2 showers and to perhaps have air-conditioning in the the spa area so you don't merge needing a second shower...

We stayed here for 4 days at the end of a 2 week trip around the country and while this is not a true experience of Cuba it is a very relaxing place to stay.

This is probably the best hotel I've ever stayed at. It's all you could want and more! Absolutely beautiful and modern decor, clean, staff are friendly, so much free entertainment to do I can't even list it all! Such as language lessons, salsa lessons, quizzes, gym, bingo, games room, spa and sauna, shows, tennis, golf and many more. You even get free Cava the moment you walk through the door. The pool is nice, and the beach feels like you are in paradise. Great cocktail and bar menu. There are ameneites you have to pay for such as internet and hair salon and massage. The food isn't the best but mostly everywhere in Cuba is like that. Great connections to get into the local town and area.

We stayed at the Blau at the end of July / start of Aug '13 and it proved to be a great hotel. Whilst we were told we could not have the 'sea view' that we had requested, our room was on the 5th floor facing towards the south. We still had a view of the sea and mangroves and could also sit on the balcony and watch all of the old american cars driving along - most of the rooms are in fact 'sea view'.

The restaurants were all very nice with excellent live Cuban music in the grill las adelfas and a mini orchestra in the international, that play requests such as let it be by the Beatles! (Take long trousers otherwise it's not gonna happen!)

We stayed in Havana in the middle of our stay for 2 nights and although it was a great experience we could not wait to return to the luxury of the Blau. For a trip to Havana, we booked a B&B (or a casa particular) from the UK for £12 / person / night and arranged travel (air con'd bus) with Thomas Cook at the hotel. This provided a really cheap way of visiting Havana and I would also recommend this if you are on a budget. If you are not on a budget, the Parque Central in Havan was excellent.

Back to the Blau, the beach has beautiful white sand, its not too busy and you can get a good spot even at 9:30 in the morning. The sea water is very warm and a gorgeous colour. The pool is big enough for everyone. Even the evening entertainment is good! The staff could not be more helpful. We tipped all the time and all the staff were extremely happy to receive 1 CUC. I don't think it is too much of an issue for them to use it themselves or exchange it.

We got talking to some couples in the airport on the way home who did not have a good word to say about their hotels. If you want to book with confidence, choose the Blau!

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter and you can watch the old american cars driving up to the hotel.

Stayed from Aug 03-10; We arrived at 10pm, got some food from the 24hr. snack bar at the beach.
Grill cheese sandwich ok, but the chicken sandwich was awful. Avoid the grill sardine fish there at lunch; instead grill to serve, the cook grilled all of them hours ahead and covered beside the grill to keep them warm; poor food handling !
ending up
Taking the elevator and Dining in the pool side restaurant is a torture; no air conditioning around public area; you never feel any air conditioning effect in the buffet restaurant neither.
During our stay, we only pick cooked stuff, fruit and fish the cooked / grill fish was very nice though the are always over cooked because the cold cuts. cheese and salad stuff are not keep cool, another evidence of food handling error.
After my complaint; finally on the 3rd day, the sewage smell from the washrooms near the pool side and indoor bar are gone; the management need to take care of the washrooms more often.
I paid extra to upgrade to a ocean view, clean and quite king bed room on the 14th floor ( top floor ),ending up with a free sauna in the elevator and long waiting in the hot hallway whenever we going out and back to our nice cool room.
There's alot of free program day and night for all ages; the pool is clean and nice and the beach is very close by.
According to booking agent and the local representative, no tips required; all service are excellent though I didn't tip because of the frustrating CUC !

I went to the Blau on a recommendation from a friend who goes to Cuba twice a year!!
He's stayed at the Blau on several occasions and has nothing but good things to say about it.
Food at the restaurants is superb, the a la carte restaurant is exceptional! (and even serves imported alcohol like Jack Daniels!!)
The local beer is also very good, we had no issues with any of the food, just be careful with the ice based drinks at the main bar,( I drank Daiquiri's made there and had a upset stomach the next day as did one of the friends we met out there)
Service from the waiters and barmen is also the best I've ever received. Ernesto was by far the best! Most seem to speak good English too.
When you leave Cuba you genuinely feel like you are leaving friends behind.
We were tipping 2 CUC (tourist pesos) to our waiter every night,(75p to us!!) to them it was like earning 2 days pay?!
Doctors in Cuba earn less than hotel staff?!
The Cuban people are amongst the friendliest I've met, everyone in the hotel works hard and you get the impression they are thankful for what they have.
Having been to several Caribbean islands I have seen some serious poverty, you don't see it in Cuba...(maybe its all hidden?)
We took a day trip to Havana with a private tour guide that cost us 150 CUC, it was a brilliant decision as he took us at leisure to some great places and helped avoid the tour buses.
Ask for Carlos at reception as they all know him!!
You can go to Havana in a classic American car, which is very nice...but slower and more pricey!
Havana was stunning...especially Old Havana, full of crumbly old buildings, and rusty old relics from a bygone era.
The place is full of fascinating history and if you pick your tour guide carefully, you will have a fulfilling day. We had Daiquiris at the Floridita (Ernest Hemmingway's favourite haunt) before the rest of the tourists ascended on it! we always managed to stay one step ahead!!
We both really fell in love with Cuba, and are hoping to return very soon!!
I wouldn't hesitate in going back to the Blau.
Top tips...
Everyone in Cuba tries to sell you cigars!!
Only buy them from official stores to guarantee you are getting the genuine article.
Bring back as many as you can!! They are worth a fortune over in the UK, I bought a box of 20 Romeo y Julietta's for 106 CUC (£75) and online in the UK they retail at £300!!
The same applies to Havana Club Rum and Cuban coffee!
Also if you get good service...reward it, it goes a long way. I often gave the guys in the restaurant 1CUC at the different food stations, they would always greet you with a smile and usually gave you the best meat!
Hope you find this review useful...have a great time in Cuba you won't be disappointed
