We stayed here for 11 nights from April 22nd to May 2nd. This was the second part of our split site holiday and it was the ideal way to relax after 4 nights in Havana. The Hotel is one of the larger hotels on Varadero beach but it is incredibly peaceful and although the hotel was full it never felt overcrowded.
The rooms are nothing special and not in line with a 4* in England but they are clean and of a good size. The hotel has 14 floors and if you are on a higher floor you might find the lifts rather slow, this didn't bother us as we walked but it is something that I am surprised the hotel hasn't addressed already.
The lobby bar and the piano bar were nice and relaxing and the pool area is lovely. The staff in all of the bars are extremely helpful and keen to please. The beach bar is open 24 hours, we met some great people both there and at the pool bar, people we hope to stay in touch with, which made our holiday. The buffet breakfast was not great for me as I have a gluten allergy and I cannot stomach full fat milk, which is all they have. I did have plenty of options for lunch though as there was always plain fish or meat with rice, potatoes and salad. There are 2 a la carte restaurants at the Blau and the Palma Real was excellent. We went there with some people we had met on our transfer from Havana to celebrate a 70th birthday and the violin ensemble played 'Happy Birthday' and the staff provided a cake. The quality of the beef in the Palma was excellent and the restaurant has a pleasant ambiance.
Varadero beach is beautiful, lush white sand and the sea is warm. We never struggled to get a sun lounger, which was a nice change from some of the very busy beaches in Europe we have visited previously.
The weather while we there was lovely, very hot and sunny but this did start to change from about May 1st, when we experienced storms and heavy rain. I therefore wouldn't recommend traveling after the end of April as this is the start of the rainy season.
Varadero itself is nothing special. We went there for lunch and to just to have a look around the shops. It is a nice change to go out of your hotel for a few hours and see the surrounding area.
Our holiday to Cuba was our best yet. We met wonderful people, got a great tan and came home completely chilled out and full of great memories. Surely this is what a holiday is all about. I think we may well return.
