We travelled as a couple to the Blau Varadero in October 2012.
Staff:99% of them were brilliant with the odd miserable exception but I would take that statistic anytime. The staff were great, waiters/ess, cooks, generally all of them were great. Very helpful and always smiling. You were never without a drink for long as they were very efficient and always around.
LIfts: Somewhat annoying at times. Lifts would often pass the floor higher than you requested because someone pressed the button first higher than you. Especially in the evening as a member of staff would stop at ALL floors collecting glasses on a trolley. This was particularly annoying but hey, on holiday, there's no rush right !
Room: Had a lovely maid called Betty. Although we had some ants in the room they were not really a problem so we didnt report them.Room safe included which was good and big enough for Ipad etc..
TV - Could do with more english speaking channels so watched a lot of CNN which isnt always great. Hurrican Sandy was all over it !
Pool: Was great if not a little cold....Colder than the sea anyway. Nice pool though and quite big.
Food: In general the food was great. Lots of choice and they mixed it up by having some feature nights in repsect of "cuisine from around the world" There are some Al a carte restaurants which you get some tokens for which were good to.
Hurricane "Sandy" or what is commonly known in the USA as "Superstorm Sandy" passed by during our stay and quite a few hundred miles away. This said, the winds and rain were phenominally hard and strong. The hotel was partially flooded with rainwater at one point but it didnt spoil the stay, I'm just glad we were no closer to it. The sea state was pretty rough afterwards and the red flags were out for most of our stay which was a little disappointing as we love the sea but at least we were safe. There were lifeguards on patrolling and blowing their whistles to stop people swimming which was great to see.
We are divers and managed to dive with Barracuda diving out of Varadero but we needed a 2 1/2 hr coach journey to the south (Bay of Pigs) because of the sea state. Amazing diving there though and well worth the trip.
Overall: This hotel was great. It is not on a par with other hotels I have been to with the same star rating but this is Cuba and part of the charm is regular power outages, locally sourced ingredients and food and the smiles which MOST of the Cubans have.
One word to the wise...Everyone and I mean Everyone will try to sell you Cigars !! It gets pretty funny as the weeks progress as your replies are ever more honed, down to a single shake of the head is enough. What is great is they dont continually pester you and follow you. Just a sharp "no thanks" and a smile is enough.
I would return to this hotel as we had a wonderful time. We stayed for 3 nights in Hotel Saratoga in Havana before coming to Varadero and I have written a report on this hotel to.
