“Had an amazing vacation. I definitely will return again.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2010

My husband and I along with our two boys (ages 7 and 10) stayed at the Iberostar Varadero from May 31st to June 7th. We have now travelled to Cuba 7 times in total to diifferent resorts in Varadero as well as Cayo Coco. The Iberostar Varadero is by far the best place we have stayed at to date. We loved everything about this resort including the amazing staff, the rooms, the pool area and the beach. The entertainment staff at this resort is absolutely amazing and will do anything to get you involved in their daily games, and shows. People like Nouri, Susel, Rolly Polly, Felix and Alex were very enthusiastic and worked hard to make everyones stay enjoyable. Hola to all of them!
I would most definitely recommend this resort to family and friends. I don't have any faults with this resort as we all loved it, including the kids. I cannot believe some of the reviews I have read and some of the petty complaints people have had in regards to this place. I loved the fact that this is a family oriented resort for families with kids of all ages. If you are looking for a quiet resort with no children try the resort next door as it is an adults only hotel.

I stayed at the Iberostar with my husband from 19th May to 2nd June. We both enjoyed our holiday very much.
Rooms
We were allocated a standard room in block 16 which had a lovely sea view. The room was a very good size with a big bathroom which had a walk in shower and a separate bath.
We e-mailed the hotel before our departure to request a 3rd floor room as we have been on lower floors on previous holidays with noisy people above us. We received confirmation from the hotel before leaving the UK that we would be allocated the 3rd floor and we were which we were very pleased about. Our room was extremely quiet for the 14 nights of our stay.

Pools
There are 3 pools, a large main pool, a smaller activity pool and an even smaller pool by the Spa Centre. We did not use any of the pools, but spoke to people who did. The main pool was popular with families, and so always extremely busy and noisy. The water was warm and not very deep which was good for children, but not so good if you wanted to swim. The other pools were deeper, but small.
The sun beds and umbrellas at the main pool were reserved very early, many by 6.30am with most of them reserved by 7.00am. Unfortunately, we observed some people reserving beds on the beach and the pool.

Beach
When we were not on excursions we spent our days on the beach which we thought was lovely, much better than we were expecting after reading negative reviews from other guests.
The beach is not as wide as it is at some of the other hotels, but we thought this was better as we did not have a long way to go to get into the sea. The beach may be narow, but it is very long with a busy stretch where the beach activities took place. We chose to stay at the opposite end, near to where the water sports were situated as we found this to be quieter.
The sea was absolutely lovely, very warm and shallow with the most beautiful colour blues.
As with the pool, beds and umbrellas were reserved early with most of the shade being reserved by 7.30am.

Food
We ate in all the restaurants, the buffet and the speciality restaurants.
We have stayed in many hotels in the Caribbean and so have many comparisons, as a result of this we felt that the restaurants were not the best we have eaten in as we have stayed in other all inclusive hotels where the choice was much better, however, we felt the speciality restaurants were better than the main buffet for dinner. For breakfast and lunch we felt the buffet restaurant offered a good choice.

Activities
There was a good variety of activities throughout the day and the evening which were popular with many of the guests. There were shows in the evening which we did not watch as we got to the Lobby Bar and that's where we stayed, however, we spoke to others who did watch the shows and they thought they were very good.

Weather
We arrived at the hotel in torrential rain, however, the next day it had stopped, and from then it got hotter and hotter and sunnier and sunnier. We had the most glorious weather for the whole of our holiday, infact we think it was probably the hottest we have experienced in 13 years of travelling to various Caribbean Islands.
Staff members told us that the humidity was extremely high for the time of year.

Excursions
During our stay we went to Havana for the day which was fantastic. We most definitely recommend a trip to this fascinating city.
We did not go on an organised trip, we booked a taxi with another couple who we met at our welcome meeting. We are so glad that we did this as we had an absolutely brilliant day. The First Choice Rep recommended a taxi driver/guide to us, Misael Barroso was his name and he was great. Misael picked us up at 8.30am and dropped us back at the hotel at 11.15pm. He was very informative, taking us to some great places in Havana. He stayed with us for the majority of our time in Havana, but we also had time on our own to explore. He took us to a local restaurant where we sat eating and watching the sun set over the sea. LOVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We booked a jeep safari trip through First Choice which we thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend this. You do lots of different activities and see different things which was great. If you go on this one you can take sweets, pens, pencils, toiletries etc to give out, as on the way back we went through a local village where the children line the streets to wave. Other people on this trip obviously knew this as they took items to hand out.
On the whole we had a brilliant holiday. The hotel was full during our stay so seemed very busy, however, although full, we never queued for a drink, food etc.
The negatives for us were the fact that sun loungers/umbrellas had to be reserved very early. There were many families at the hotel with very young children, many under 5 years which as a couple in their 40s without children this was a negative for us.
We met some great people which helped make olur holiday more enjoyable, Roger and Angela, Graeme and Pamela, Tony and Pam (from some where they call the North) and many other friendly people.
The very friendly, hard working staff at the hotel also helped make our stay more enjoyable.

My wife and I travelled to this hotel for our silver wedding anniversary and I have to say we were not disappointed at all. A few points: The transfer from the airport to the hotel was good and the the check in was also swift and warmly. Once we were shown to our room my wife and I were quite supprised by the size of the room, the bed was huge (much bigger than a kingsize bed) the bathroom was big as well with a large shower a large deep bath and toilet with bidet. There was a fridge with beer, water and soft drinks that was restocked each day. There was a communial ice machine on the first floor that worked great. There was a TV but to be honest the programmes weren't very good. (but we don't go on holiday to watch TV) The pools and beach are fantastic, my only critisimn is there is not enough sun loungers so you have to get up quite early to reserve your spot if you're that way inclined. The hotel was great the three cuisine restaurants were lovely ( I strongly recommend the Japanese restaurant) the food in the main restaurant was fine but my wife and I found it a little salty for us (but we don't cook with salt at home so probably just our taste) but the food in general was of a high quality. The beer, wine, cocktails were ok with some top name of spirits to choose from. The evening entertainment was was ok but we don't really go to places for the entertainment not our cup of tea. I don't really have a negative point to say about this place it was what you would expect and more from a carribean holiday. The real High plusses for this place are, great warm pool, great warm clear sea, friendly atmosphere, good food and drink and the room. Would definitely go again.

The good bits ;
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The level of service is generally good, better if you tip occasionally.
The entertainment was excellent - far, far better than expected.
The room was nice, of a decent size and had a super walk-in shower.
Enjoyed the Japanese restaurant, food good and the chefs entertaining.

The not so good bits ;
Found the buffet restaurant to lack a little in variety and there were occasional problems with flies.
We didn't realise before we went that not all rooms didn't have a sea view. If you want this be sure to specify.
You will need to be up early if you want a bed by the pool. Ended up having to get up at 7 to make sure our towels got a spot. Didn't enjoy having to do this.

My husband and I arrived May 23 for one week to celebrate our 10th Wedding anniversary. This was our 4th trip to Cuba and first to Varadero. We were excited due to the reviews!
Well, it was FANTASTIC!
*Grounds were so clean and well groomed. The set up was accessible for wheel chairs and rooms were close to the restaurants and main buildings. I would rate a *5*
*Rooms clean and spacious. The mini fridge stocked( water, pop, beer) and towels and bedding were changed daily. We were in room 1203 and the maid Lourdes, created wonderful towel art. Air conditoner worked well and YES, there was a musty smell upon arrival but soon disappeared when we opened the door. Nothing to complain about! I would rate a *5*
*Food was really good, buffet had a variety for everyone and food was always warm. AL LA Carts were ok. I would rate them as a *4* Nice show at the Japanese, but, food was a little salty! Again, nothing to bad to complain about. Mediteranian was tasty. Fish and lobster was delicious but they rushed us out quick. Cuban was just ok, again, the food did taste good but felt rushed. We still did enjoy all 3 meals!
Buffet stayed open all night with snacks offered. Fruit, fries, hotdogs and burgers, bread sliced meats and refreshments were always available.
2 beach grills, pool snack bar (even with roast chicken), ice cream stand by the swim up bar Yummy!
Beach- Beautiful.*5* Lots of room to walk, lots of shade and water sports available. Very clean!!
Pool- Amazing!*5* Clean and lots of loungers available. Swim up bar served all drinks and even creative ones for the children.
Entertainment,Starfriends- *5* Wow, the crew were up at 9:00 am and never stopped until 11PM. Games around the pool all day. Beach games, volleyball, water polo, archery, water games and the kids program was amazing!! The team always smiled and you never felt pressured to participate! Lots of rum given as prizes! Thanks to Roly Poly, Victor, Rosieta and Alex for the enthusiasm and great fun!!!
Evening Entertainment and Kids program. *5* The shows are amazing...Really AMAZING! . Left me speachless with the Grammy show, Lion King and Vegas show. Children were always kept busy around the pool and even in the main show!! They did have a mini disco and in the late show, children were able to wear costumes and participate! The Iberostar team really takes care of the children and their safety!

Staff, I would rate a *5*. Again WOW!!! Had no problems at all with the front desk! Helpful at all times. Check in and out was easy and when our flight was delayed, we kept our room till 3:00 pm for 10 pesos each hour. We had access to all ammenities and a locked room to store luggage.
All staff were polite, always smiling and working very hard!!! *5*
Did not feel pressured to tip at all. We tipped at the end of our stay to the staff that did over and above for us and did tip at the shows each night as the waiters worked so hard. This was our choice! The lobby bar was busy and YES that is where there were two rude bartenders who liked to chat up the ladies and served you better if a tip was involved! (only at the Lobby bar) . Disco was ok, swings were fun!!....and kareoke from 8-9pm daily, this made our evening interesting.
Lots of excursions offered and the Havana trip is a must! There is also a double decker bus trip for 5 pesos each, which is offered daily. Just walk to the end of the street and it will take you to Varadero to explore all day! Jump on and off all day from 9-9pm. Great for the kids!

Overall, this resort is a *5* and is wonderful for families and Couples!!! Loved it and will return again -HOLA-

I booked 14 night holiday for 10 adults, with First Choice. We got group booking discount via travel agent which beat any online quote. Our outwardbound flight was delayed by 12 hours because of the volcantic ash over the Atlantic... but the flight operator gave us food voucher immediately, hot buffet lunch at Gatwich Hilton and kept us fully informed. I recommend the premium seat upgrade, well worthe every penny for check-in speed, leg room, luggage allowance and unlimited drinks. We brought VIP tickets £19 each from rep for return flight-there is nothing in Cuba airport so the VIP lounge with air-conditioning, free drinks & snacks, priority boarding makes it more pleasureable.
The hotel is truely 5*. Immaculate in presentation in all public areas. The grounds are tendered every day & look fantastic. Buffet food has wide selection & pleased even the most fussy of us in the group...me.!!. The staff are very friendly & seem even quicker at the bar if you tip the odd Peaso! Daily maid service who can make all sorts of animals out of towels. The hotel facilities are great & the beach really is white sand as far as you can see. The all-inclusive option gives you as much or as little as you like, food, drink & entertainment. We did overnight Havana tour which was interesting but the Havana hotel was not 4* they quoted... 2 * at best so be warned!. Cuba isan interesting place but don't expect shooping expect culture & diversity. All 10 of us would recommend hotel to anyone & everyone! Fantastic place to visit

Having been on quite a few luxury holidays and stopping in 5* hotels when it says on the internet Iberostar Varedero was one too and reading how fantastic it was on tripadvisor we decided with friends to go!!!
It started badly from day 1...got to check in hotel looked lovely pool fab and then there was problems with our meals which as it was new yrs eve we were told afteralong flight and 2 small kids we had 45mins to get down to our room and get dressed for the meal and the show pfft.
FANTASTIC SHOW!!! Room was good size but basic.
Day 2........weather gorge sitting by pool kids running round having fun..us adults thinking fabulous!!
THEN DAY 3......weather was bad cold and windy and from this day for the rest of our hols we didnt get our swimsuits on brrrrr, but this was defo not the problem for us after aweek we would have noticed the problems had it been warmer but as it was cold we started noticing straight away.....food in restaurant was recycled ie boiled eggs in shells for brekkie if not used were chopped up for dinner with mayo slapped on a plate!!
flys and no covers on food...puts me straight off.
we noticed the pool bar the drinks tasted weaker than in the bar by the lobby..yuck!!
our room even tho we had a pushchair was up a flight of steps no lifts here.
on a night time our room...we think we were by drains of some sort as it stank of human waste..one night it was that bad it woke me up and i could not sleep it stunk that bad.
as it was windy and rainy the staff did their best but they were not used to ahvin this weather and had no idea what to do with us guests....kids were bored we kept being sent into the hotel nightclub where there was karaoke-if u could get the mic off the staff who were havin their own party.
we left the hotel on a couple of occasions for excursions which were good to see what cuba has to offer......
beach was nice but kids got bit alot while on there so only went twice.
mosquitos took a liking to my partner who after a wk of being bitten and crap weather and boredom wanted to go home.
im normally very calm but when i decided to send all of the clothes we had that were keeping us warm down to the laundry which was costing me about £50 to have washed...the nxt day i came back to the room tops on coathangers the rest folded and b4 i started looking the maid collared me and showed me my hubbys top(£40) it had a black mark onit and she explained that the hotel would not be chargin for cleaning. i said ok(doh), after she went i examined all other items and every1 had these marks on them £300 pounds worth of clothing which id brought for the hols ruined!!
Reception were unhelpful till i told them how much there clothes were and after agreeing that if they could get the marks out i would settle it nxt day it was sorted!!
(apparantly a worker with a biro).
overall staff were friendly some were asking us for old clothes for their families and trying to buy our clothes b4 we went back(which i found rude) but as hotel workers (bar staff and waitresses) especially they are alot more better off than others so i would recommend people give them to the gardeners who work so hard and get next to nothing for their families!!
food was not up to 5* standard neither were rooms and if we had, had some good weather we would not have found this holiday so bad but when your sunbathing by the pool 24-7 you dont seem to notice the little bits until your bored to tears.
