We stayed in this hotel for our wedding at the end of October and haven't a bad word to say about it!
We traveled as a group of 15 including a toddler. The hotel was excellent, the staff were all very friendly and helpful and the rooms were of a very high standard - especially the bathrooms! The cleaning of the rooms and communal areas was always of a very high standard. Despite being warned beforehand about the food in Cuba we had no complaints about the food and drink on offer in this hotel - especially the buffet and the Japanese restaurants. The pool and location of the hotel are great.

The wedding organizer and staff did an amazing job for our wedding. We met up on the second day of the holiday to pick the wedding location, meal, cake and flowers. We chose the beach location for the wedding which was perfect, the area was decorated in our wedding colours with flowers lining the aisle. We hired a sax and piano duo to provide the music and had a waiter serving campaign to everyone on the beach.
The wedding photographer was lovely and took some amazing photographs; we had only planned to purchase 50 pictures, but they were so good that we ended up buying all 400!!
Mine and the bridesmaids hair and makeup was done by the lady in the spa for a very reasonable cost. She was absolutely lovely and did an amazing job (far better than the trial in the UK!).
We also hired a classic car for photographs which was a great addition and hired out the beach bar and DJ for a private party late into the night. We would highly recommend both of these to other parties getting married in this destination.

This review is coming a little late (I often read them but rarely post them) but knowing how much I depend on them when booking my vacations, decided to go back and review places where I have stayed. I was there for a wedding in May of 2012. Large group of varying ages. Overall, everyone had a great time. Restaurants were great for Cuba, but just good when compared to other destinations. But good is good. Found the 24 hour snack selection a bit odd. When people are popping in after the disco closes, we really only need pizza, hot dogs and fries. Instead, it was a lot of getting rid of the leftovers that no one wanted at dinner, which even after a few drinks, wasn't looking any better. However, at least there was something open, selection notwithstanding. The rooms were comfortable enough. Not what I would call super luxurious, but clean and comfortable are really all I need. The beach is spectacular. The pool was also great- very clean. Evening entertainment was very good- one of the best resorts I have been to for that- although I truthfully didn't watch every night. The wedding was great- beachfront, champagne for everyone post-ceremony, and a private reception room for dinner and dancing. They had special menus for the kids (chicken nuggets etc) which made life easier for the parents. Overall, the resort was very well kept, the staff were all friendly and accommodating, and Cuba, well, it's my favourite destination for a reason. It definitely was one I would return to, although I usually like to try out different resorts when I go.

I've just returned from here after a birthday celebration with friends. We had a great time and everyone enjoyed their stay. It's a nice hotel, clean and well laid out. Most of the staff are very helpful and cheerful. There is always an exception and he works in the international serving the coffee & drinks at lunch time. He would make an excellent undertaker or insolvency advisor! The rest of the staff especially Orlando and Leo-boy (?) were great. The shows were a little bit dated and a bit ' holiday camp' but the show team worked really hard to do their best to entertain.
The shows are a bit loud so it would be nice if there was a bar away from them so if you wanted a drink & chat you could. The disco is nicely fitted out but was mostly empty. The DJ tried his best but his music was aimed at the under 20s and the average age of the guests is between 40-50.
The food in the main restaurant was plentiful but was mostly over cooked. The international restaurant and the Mediterranean, where you have to book, (why?) are a little better but the Japanese is a waste of time. While the big chef was entertaining (unlike the other chef who never opened his mouth) the food is just meat and veg cooked on a hot plate in front of you, without any noticeable difference between this and, well English meat and veg cooked on a hot plate. It would be better in all the restaurants if more attention was paid to the quality of the chefs, and instead of piling it high after cooking the living daylights out if it, taking a bit more care over it. The quality of the drink is hit and miss with mostly no brand, cheap varieties of spirits being served. The beach at the hotel had been swept away in a storm so there was a two foot drop half way before the sea. I presume this will be sorted soon but I've stayed at what was Sandals next door and the beach is better there. All in all a good hotel but not as good as the Mexican or other Caribbean hotels we've stayed in. If this is the best in Cuba I wouldn't want to stay in any of the others. Don't get me wrong you will enjoy your stay I'm sure but Cuba in general will need to raise its game to compete with other Caribbean destinations. A few tips on do's and don'ts: We enjoyed the Bond boat excursion ( don't get talked into paying extra when you get there) others on our trip loved swimming with the dolphins, I also did a parachute jump out of a helicopter which was unbelievable. I recommend it. Don't bother with the horse riding though it's a waste of time.

Room Tip: Get a sea view in block 19 if you can.

Dear guest,
We are glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us overall although you pointed out a few things which you disliked, normally everyone always enjoys our resort very much besides your kind words about our entertainment staff and their activities.
Just to clarify your points, we will look into the behavioural matter that you raised regarding one of our serving staff as we very rarely encounter this comment , thus our staff is wellknown for their sympathy and warmth , our disco plays the music we better think it fits our clientele, it can be requested as well, although if we notice the disco being empty and the poeple in it are of a certain average (30s) we play current music, bookings are needed in restaurant as otherwise seatings would not be respected and service would end up being not satisfactory to our guests being a direct cause of complain our buffets do not need any booking as they are spacious enough to fit eveyone and no waiter service is required except for drink order, we do offer best quality items both in restaurant as well as in bars with well known brads for all kind of drinks, we might not have a specific drink but we do have a second choice although we have pretty much everything.
As you could see when being a guest, we all work very hard to reach and achieve everyones full satisfaction while being inhouse although as we found ourselves where we are it is difficult for us to be compared to other caribean destinations where other conditions apply making therefore a differece, however our staff who is constantly on top of thing and our clientele makes the greatest difference of them all having everytime more returning customers because of them.
We hope you find this explanatory enough and please do come back and we will ensure your enjoyment and satisfaction allthroughout ,
Best regards

We had partly chosen the Iberostar Varadero on the TA reviews and partly on our previous experience with Iberostar resorts. The Varadero property did not disappoint. On our transfer from airport to resort, it was obvious the other resorts were not as well maintained as ours.

Room- We had a beautiful Jr. Suite in block 17 and a corner unit at that so nice and private. The location of the rooms does not allow for much of an ocean view unless you are on the top floor but we could hear the surf and sometimes that's all you need! The room was very spacious and all new furniture and fixtures. Our housekeeping staff was very efficient and had the room made up in good time everyday. The evening staff who replenished the towels and did a quick clean up were very much appreciated. They too left beautiful towel art. Although we rarely used the mini bar, it was there should we want a refreshment in our own room. We did have trouble getting coffee after the second day, had left a note and still none was left but not a big issue as we were close to the restaurant.

Dining- I had read reviews on TA previously and so many had complained about the a la carte restaurants. We booked the International and Mediterranean restaurants and loved them both. The food was fabulous and it really made us wonder what all of those reviewers were complaining about. The main buffet was always good and a great selection. We never found any issue with food not being hot or cold enough. The assistant chef ? walked the dining room every day and asked how things were and if we had any recommendations. We could not think of anything that they needed to improve upon. But for those who come home and then complain on TA, perhaps you should have brought it up with the staff first and they would have made it right. Quite honestly we could have been in Mexico, DR or anywhere else as the food was consistent with what the resorts in those destinations serve.

Beach- The Iberostar Varadero is located on a beautiful stretch of white sand beach. Well maintained although it appears they brought in some sand at some time or other which has made for a bit of a 'shelf' down onto the actual beach area. Not a problem though. You can take long walks and there are plenty of seashells for everyone to pick! Lots of beach loungers were available. The only problem we had at the beach was the sand fleas. These are NOT mosquitoes but fleas which you don't even realize are biting you until later. We did apply bug lotion but when you're walking on the shore, kind of hard to keep that fresh! This is a natural problem though and not the fault of the resort at all so just beware of it and perhaps there is a waterproof repellent available that I haven't heard about yet.

Pool- The pool was absolutely beautiful. They had issues with their filtration system prior to our visit so the pool had been drained and refilled with sparkling clean water. The pool is huge so never seemed crowded. There is a separate pool for water games so that keeps a lot of noise down in the main pool. We never had a problem finding chairs at the pool and the bar service was very efficient. They had a lot of entertainment staff around to keep you occupied if you wanted more to do.

Excursions- We opted for a private tour of Havana in a 57 Chevy with a driver and guide. It was a perfect day and we saw and learnt so much. If you have never been to Cuba before or just never taken the Havana tour, I would strongly suggest going this route rather than with your Tour Operators arranged bus tour. Send me a private message if you would like the name of the guide we used.

Entertainment- We enjoyed the entertainment every evening and especially the Michael Jackson who could move just like Michael! These people work hard and learn a lot of choreography for the week's shows so we had no complaints. The band that played prior to the show every evening maybe wasn't to our liking but we spent that time in the lobby lounge where a magician was going from table to table doing illusions! There was also a piano player and a Cuban band another night.

Overall Experience- Our first visit to Cuba was an excellent experience. I had many fears about food and resort conditions prior to travelling as it seems everyone says " just remember, its Cuba!" but the Iberostar Varadero was a beautiful resort with top notch service and facilities. We would return in a heartbeat!

Lovely room, lovely staff, stunning beaches, entertainment was beyond. I don't have kids but if I did I would bring them there. They even involve the children in the evening shows, including costumes and performances!

Staff were fun and presented many activities for us to try. I particularly enjoyed salsa on the beach and archery! Only wished they had a volleyball net on the beach to play but they offered it in the pool. Weather was amazing and I remained on the beach the whole time receiving great service, always a chair available, a table (75% occupancy at the end of November 2013) and lovely fresh daquiris. Highly recommend this resort for couples, groups of friends and families.

Room Tip: Had a lovely room up in the trees in section 17 - highly recommend 1724!

First of I have to Thank the hotels wedding co-ordinator Belkis for an amazing job at arranging everything. She took the stress out of arranging a wedding and done a fantastic job. Everything from the beach location set up to the music on the beach, champagne, dinner and party at the beach bar with our own DJ and bar staff was excellent, better than I had hoped for. It was an amazing day from start to finish. Our room was decorated beautifully on our return from a night of dancing. Thanks Belkis for arranging a wedding that was done to perfection.

I would also recommend the photographer and video services the hotel uses for weddings. Both done an amazing job at capturing our very special day and their attention to detail was gleaming.

The other hotel staff were amazing too from the girls at the front desk reception to the pool bar staff made our week fantastic. Yovanny and the team at the pool bar and beach bar were the best. The food at this resort it the best out of any hotel i've stayed at in Varadero, which has been 5 hotels now. We stayed in the Laguna Azul the week following for our honeymoon, only because Sunwing advised us that this resort was full, which I later found out it was not, and the food was that bad compared to here that we returned after a short walk on the beach to eat!!
:-)

I wish this resort had the swimming pools that the Iberostar Laguna Azul has, but other than that I would recommend this resort to anyone, number 1 in Varadero by far. Amazing week, Gracias Staff at the Iberostar Varadero. Marty Flanagan
