I will return!
The hotel staff gave incredible service . All the staff we met were very friendly and tried thier best to make our stay a memorable one. Drinks flowed freely and they were not watered down
The beach is lovely- no seaweed in the water or on the beach, no dangerous rocks in the water, only small pebbles and broken coral. The water was clear and pristine, warm and relatively calm. Beach accomodation was plentiful and you can easily find an empty cabana at any time of the day while we were there. No problem getting drinks on the beach either,as there are 2 bars on the beach and there is always a waiter going around on the beach asking if we want drinks.
Lots of security on the beach made you feel very safe. There was lots of beach activity and entertainment provided by the staff and you were not hounded to participate. My wife did participate in the Cuban dance lessons while I taped her movements.
We love the sea water so we only went to the pool once for a short time when it was raining, so we cannot provide a review of pool activities
We stayed in building #17 close to the beach, but had a garden view on the ground floor due to difficulty climbibg stairs. There are no elevators in the villas.
The housekeeping staff made lovely towel animals & provided everything we needed, including keeping our mini-bar stocked. Room service was also very nice. They even privided a bottle of wine and flowers on the bed on my birthday. This was a nice touch as I did not alert them of my birthday .
The food was great at the Buffet , but only average at the Japanese and Meditaranean restaurants.
All the rooms are air conditioned, spacious, quiet, lovely and clean The bed was very comfortable
The nightly entertainment and shows were the best I have seen at any resort I have been to. The daytime shows were average but at night it was absolutely brilliant. Really professionally done.
We did a package through Hola Sun and you really couldn't mess up. They got us from the plane to the bus to the resort. There was a Hola Sun representative at the hotel lobby everyday to book optional activities and tours. We declined as we were there to relax.
He told us exactly what we needed to get out of Cuba and back home. The return trip was as easy as the arrival.
There are some negative aspects to my trip.
I could not get a mojito at night from the lobby bar. They always ran out of lime. I did not want one in the morning.
Transportation into town requires a bus or taxi

Room Tip: Try Villa #17 for lovers of the beach. Its close by.

We stayed at the Iberostar Varadero complex for the first 2 weeks in October.2011

Arrival:-
The Airplane trip was not the most pleasant,
Its a nine hour flight and the TV monitors were broken:

Airport :-
This is the quickest ive ever been through an airport.
Proberbly due to the low aircraft traffic,

Iberostar Hotel

The Good:
The approach to the Hotel is a pleasant one, the canopy overhanging the drive protecting you from the heat as you enter the fouyer.
Within 10 minutes we had left the coach booked in, bands attached and where sitting down in the reception area with a nice fruit cocktail, all in all a good start.

We had block 15 I think this must be one of the furthests blocks away from the main communial areas, even so its still only 150 mtrs from the Bars : Restraunts and the Beach. (Very Quite at Night)

Accomodation 1523
The rooms are of a reasonable standard,
The bed was a queen size foam mattress which was medium Firm which suited us completley.
The room comes with a TV : Fridge : Coffee maker : Safe : Hair Dryer along with a few other minor things .

NB :- The fridge takes 12 hours to cool if it has been unplugged for a few days before arrival :
NB:- The TV has a few channels in English mainly the news but there is always a film on at night you just need to find it amongs the 40 stations:

NB:- The Only 2 Pin Flat plugs sockets are being used by the TV and the Fridge ,
All other sockets are 2 pin round plug

Iberostar Complex
As usual Iberostar staffs maintain the gardens and buildings to a good standard; the design of the complex is also standard .

Food:-

Breakfast
Our usual was freshly fried eggs sunnyside up on toast with bacon along with a few beans.
There was a vast selection to choose from.
We never got around to the fresh omletes but they looked good.

The main buffet area :-
We learnt years ago not to try the entire Buffet in one night that way we don’t get bored LOL.

Over the 2 weeks I think I had the same meal once or twice but that was because I like fish.
I don’t think I even got round to the pasta dishes,
The food was Hot and Varied I cant really complain about the food at all:

Restraunts:-
They have to be booked at certain times at reception, I booked them for various days with no problems, and we went back to the meditrainium twice due to the selection.
We didn’t have a problem with any of them,

Drinks:-
The drinks are of a reasonable standard (a lot better tasting than Egypt).
Some branded drinks are stored in the glass cabinets behind the bar these ARE also included you just have to ask.

Bad
Only 1or 2 frustrations but it is a common issue in a lot of places,.
For the first day and a half I didn’t tip due to getting change and paying for trips etc the only place that made me feel uncomfortable was the pool bar. We tended to avoid it after that, proberbly me being over sensitive.

We always had to go and get some coffee mate : Milk : Sugar for the room as it was seldom left.

Ugly:-

No Ugly im afraid

Costings:-
How much do you need to spend? (2 adults)
We found that the total cost for the trips we took over the 2 weeks came to approx £450-+ £150 for additional items plus tips Total =£600
Varadero Trips via Buses and taxi £200
Hotel Tips approx £150 - £200
If you take £1000 spends you should have a reasonable time

I will definatly return to cuba as there is so much to see
This is a 5 star Family Hotel it cannot be compare to 5 Star adults only

Room Tip: If you have children , Blocks 14 : 15: 16 are the best choice due to noise from the night club

We were in Iberostar Varadero from 14 to 18 march 2011.

We first looked here, and decided to go with the one hotel that had the best review according to trip advisor reviewers. This is why we picked the no.1 on the list, although the cost of staying was much higher than at other resorts.

First off, food was the bigest disappointment. It was our first time and Cuba, and according to people we talked to, you do not want to go to Cuba overall for food. Iberostar was no exception. You would think that at least, seafood would taste good since your are on the ocean but it wasn't the case. There is three à la carte restaurant, that we all tried. we ate way better just at the main food course.

Resort is nice overall. Activities Service is ok. We tried a couple and the best one is the jeep safari. Lots of fun on that day.

Service at the resort was great. Drinks were ok. Lots of seller on the beach, but they do not harass you. Ask for Carlos at the pool bar, very nice guy!

This trip was an eye opener for us. We now know that we will never go back to Cuba.

Room Tip: Do not pay for ocean view. lots of extra cost, for a very restricted view in some locations..

I'd never been to Cuba before, so I'm writing this review in comparison to resorts I've been to in other countries.

Pros:

The resort itself is small but nicely appointed and very well kept. Rooms are spacious and beds are very comfortable with an additional 3 pillows in the closet should you need them. Air conditioning worked very well and water pressure in the bathroom was excellent. The food was very average compared to other resorts I've been to but from hearing other guests, we might have had the best food on the island! Drinks were good and strong and all staff we encountered were friendly and accomodating. The beach is lovely, albeit narrow, with no problems finding cabanas even well into the morning - same goes at the pool - we never had problems finding shaded chairs. Activity staff was pretty chill, which I appreciate because I'll participate in something if I want to but I don't like being hounded to do so. The shows were very good, some of the best shows I've ever seen at the resorts I've been to and the band that plays before the shows have one hell of a trombone player who I think is wasted playing at a resort - he should be a star playing jazz in New Orleans. Also, because it rained for the majority of this holiday, the resort did a good job of internal entertainment - they had a variety of musical entertainment (a woodwind trio, a latin band x2, etc)

Cons:

We had a terrible ant problem in the room, like, they were EVERYWHERE! We just dealt with it but I could see some people may have a problem with it. The coffee maker and iron didn't work, well, they "worked" but the iron never really got hot (ie - after having it on max for 15min, I could still touch the metal without burn) and it took about 1hr to brew 2 cups of coffee. We did request a new coffee maker and the new one worked - we didn't bother with the iron. The ironing board broke as well, as in, it stood up but we could never get it folded again. As mentioned before, the food was average, edible with some variety and from what I heard from other travelers, it is quite good by Cuban standards but disappointing compared to other resorts I've been to. The coffee was also very disappointing for the Caribbean. One final thing is the music. They played the same music everyday. By the pool, before the show, the piano player in the lobby bar and the club...same music always.

All-in-all, it was a nice resort, clean with many activities and friendly staff but if that was what was rated the best in Varadero, I don't think I'll be going back. There are other resorts that offer much more.

Room Tip: The resort is not big so wherever you chose is a short walk. #17 and 20 are reserved for junior sui...
