Hotel Melia Marina Varadero
Ranked #15 of 64 Hotels in Varadero
Reviewed July 21, 2014

Our review is based on several different hotel and resort we have visited in the past some country like Cuba have embargo, so they cannot get whatever they want. We have stayed at the Melia Marina Varadero, after reading good reviews about this hotel we decide to give it a try and see by ourselves, we have tried several resort in Varadero and all over Cuba and this place is very different from all the resort we have tried. The only thing we can say about this place is WOW. The only bad thing is we had to get back home. First the hotel is brand new, their standards are very high, and the service quality is more than excellent, one of the things that really picked our attention is that the staffs do not wait to get money to give you an outstanding service and so all over the resort. If you complain about this place and thing this is a refugee camp as I have read from previous reviewer, it is maybe because you have a problem yourself and you are not able to enjoy anything in life. We traveled with our daughter and she loved it too.

Food and Restaurant
The food; my husband has health problems; this is the first time after a week he would not mind staying a few more day if he could. The food is more than excellent for Cuba and believe me, you will not go hungry, there is something for everyone, yes people are complaining about the repetitive buffet, its true but if you start eating everything the same day, of course at the end of the week it might be a bit of the same, but you have to ask yourself at home do you eat pasta, fish, beef, pizza & salad every meal every day.
The Buffet: This is the place, most resort close the buffet for lunch during the summer this place is open every day at lunch, and you it is very appreciated from several people we spoke with, so keep it open at lunch or I am sure you will start receiving bad review. They have everything, fresh salad, fresh fruit, a lot of vegetable, pizza, pasta, fish, beef, chicken, sandwich bar, very good desert, soup, fresh bread, butter, ice cream which my daughter enjoyed so much & more. The cooks and the kitchen personnel is walking around and they always make sure the buffet is full, the food is warm and when I say warm it is, of course if you walked 10 minutes with your plate in your hand the food will be cold when you’ll start eating it. A very strong point is that there standards are very high, so keep it that way.
During our stay we have tried 3 a la carte restaurants; the level which would have been ok without kids the food was excellent but we were there for the incredible sunset view from the restaurant. the inside of the restaurant would need a little bit more warm colors, this is just my opinion, The French restaurant was also very good the meat cooked perfectly, but our favorite was the Oriental restaurant, very very good, and if you are not satisfied simply go back to the buffet.

Another nice comment about the entertainment every night there was something new, magic show, live music show, very good band and the entertainment does end around 22h30, a very reasonable time for those who wants to go to bed early. About people complaining when the show is inside the lobby bar when it rain, I would say they would have complain anyway if the show would been cancel because of the weather.

Ground/ Beach and pool
We use to take the little ride to the beach every morning to enjoy the ocean then go back after a few hour to spend the rest of the morning by the pool, the only downside are the beach chair at the beach they should have cushion like the chair found in the pool area. But this is only a detail. Bar, restaurant and staff at the pool were excellent. The ground is very clean and well maintain.

We first booked a room asking pool view but we have been given a room marina view, to be honest I am not very sure if the pool view room are quieter during the day, there is still construction going on and of course you will hear some noise. The room are big and very comfortable; a very good size with balcony, the bathroom are big and has a separate bath and shower which was nice for those complaining about the toilet door glass its probably because you do not have much to do when you have time to complain about such things. The room cleaning lady did the room every morning with a big smile and the fridge was filed with crystal beer, cola, and Fanta every day. And once again if you are not happy with your room go to the front desk and ask to be change the will do their best to please you. We decided to keep the room up to 6 PM because our flight was at night, which cost us a little extra but worth the extra money. Check-in / Checkout were done quickly and professionally as expected.

I also think the level would have to improve for us to pay extra money to use that section; the terrace on the 7th floor will need major improvement, maybe some kind of patio with upper deck as you can sit there and enjoy the view, there was only a few table no cushion on the chair and we were sitting you were not able to see over the wall. Maybe it’s only a matter of security.

In conclusion do not hesitate to go to this hotel, this is the best resort we experienced so far in Cuba, I hope the quality, of the food, and the high standard in general will remain the same for several years and will not go down when they will change management. They even brought my husband honey every time he ordered a coffee. So if you are complaining about food, sleeping quality, music or anything else, I think your best bet is to stay home and watch TV.

Mr Renaud, keep walking around, talking with people, and keep the very high standard. Would you please thank these individuals personally for their incredible and impeccable service and for making our stay very special and for having a smile even when tired with everyone, - Yoelvis – Osvaldo, Anelys & Yasmany (Buffet) – Aleany & Yosley (pool bar and buffet)- Ladien, Yadiana & Eybar (Terrace) – Tomy & Edrey (bar Ambos mundos) – Mayren (oriental restaurant & buffet) – Idelsy (reception)- Jenny (Cleaning lady). Because you cannot get mozzarella cheese for poutine, we had one for you on our way back. Thank you and we will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Both side are good; pool side you have the sea view, marina side you get a different view when spend...

First of all you need to know that varadeo is not the real Cuba - but if you travelled around Cuba its nice to have a couple of days to relax here. It's a new hotel (barely 1 year old), so they are still building/extending, but we weren't disturbed by this in any way. I think you get quite a lot for your money and the rooms are so beautiful - plus the view over the marina is very nice. BUT unfortunately it's terribly cold in the rooms because the air condition is centrally controlled and apparently most people like freezing cold air. But I didn't come to Cuba to freeze and I ended up with way too little sleep, had to wear four blankets, sweatpants and a sweater. That kind of ruined the great experience for me. But if you like cold air, I would defineret recommend staying here. Very nice pool, spa and beach. The staff is so friendly. The best place to eat is in the a la carte Latin restaurant "don Ernesto". The buffet can be kind of crazy because of stressed tourists.

Dear “Mia P” from Copenhagen (Denmark), I thank you so much for reporting your nice comments concerning your stay at the Meliá Marina Varadero on the Trip Advisor’s Web site.
It was good to see that you appreciate the friendliness of our employees all over the resort as well as the quality of our food and the beauty of our pool and beach area.
Concerning the A/C in your room I do understand perfectly the fact you do not like to use the A/C system. This is why we planned, when building the hotel, to place in every room a ceiling fan. We did it especially for the European guests who do not use often the A/C. We are in fact one of the few hotels on the island providing this kind of alternative and, believe me, it works perfectly since it is cooling your room without having to support the cold of an A/C.
I thank you so much, despite of the A/C incident for recommending so highly our resort and I hope you will come back soon to visit us in Cuba.

This was our second trip to Melia Marina Varadero. Our first time in March was incredible, and this trip in June exceeded that! The service and attention to us as returning clients was absolutely amazing. The management and staff ensured that we had the best service and extra surprises that made this the trip of a lifetime! We are already planning our next trip back to see our extended family at this exceptional hotel. A big thank you to Gildas and his lovely wife Angely for making our trip so much more than a vacation. These memories will be with us always! Gracias!

Reviewed July 19, 2014

My family and I vacationed here from the 2nd week of July and I am perplexed by some of the negative reviews. Such as rooms smelling like urine, we definitely did not have that experience. Our room was cleaned and mopped daily and smelt fine. My children, were very excited to come back to our room to see what fabulous concoctions the housekeepers, Sonia and Delanis (?) created using the towels and blankets. They especially loved when their dads glasses, and some of their clothing were used. My daughter wore the fresh flowers in her hair and my son even slept with the bunny made out of towels...Thank you Sonia and Delanis.
Also the complaint about nowhere to hang your wet things...seriously?...do what the rest of us do and hang them on the balcony and chairs. I have traveled to several countries in Europe as well and have NOT had anywhere to hand my wet things outdoors....GEEZ people...
The only complaint about the room was the smell of the brown blanket...that could probably use a wash...

Food- My children were warned before we left that things were not going to taste the same as home. So from time to time they would say 'this tastes different' and again we reminded them that this was going to be the case. So, be aware ...THINGS ARE GOING TO TASTE DIFFERENT!
There was a variety of pasta, fish, egg dishes, meat and chesses available. Being the summer, the fruit was fresh and now I know what a banana is supposed to taste like, Yum. The staff in the dining hall were so friendly and we were able to seat ourselves wherever we liked. An extra thanks to the hostess who greeted us so warmly every morning.

The kids liked the food at the pool restaurant the best, although the service was oddly slow.
The Latin a la carte was our favourite. Friendly staff, delicious food (not what you would find at the buffet) and so generous towards the kids. A must try is the pumpkin pie.

Front desk- They were great when we arrived, check in was quick. There were cold drinks brought to us and the kids upon arrival. Our bags were brought to our room right away. When we left our key in the room they gave us a new one without issue. Also someone came to fix our sliding door when it wouldn't lock (they even followed up with a call to see if we were satisfied)
Some minor issues-forgot to send someone up to open safe when we were told to go upstairs and wait for them. Was told to ask wait staff at the buffet for a pen as they did not have one that I could borrow at the front desk Check out was fast and friendly.

Pool- Warm and shallow enough for the kids. Beach towels were always available to exchange. Lots of seating.

Beach- Warm and clear. Kids saw some fish and a crab. Majority of the beach chairs were under umbrellas. Beach defiantly could use a raking. Lots of seashells for the kids to collect. Restaurant by beach was tasty.

Entertainment- The magic show was a hit for the kids and adults, as was the Cuban night show. Bar staff in the show area were wonderful. They were very patient with the half dozen kids who would order kids cocktails. Thank you bar staff!!!

Entertainment staff - Organized pool and beach activities (dance, aqua fit etc..) Also had games where prizes could be won. An extra thanks to Jany and Leonardo.

Kids Club- The two staff members were so so so wonderful. They were kind, fun and loving towards the kids. Dress up, dancing at the disco, playing on the beach, parties and the animal show were all activities that the kids experienced. THANK YOU STAFF!!! There is also a kids pool and a pretty good playscape.

SPA- I had the mud wrap which almost lulled me to sleep, it was so relaxing. The spa was super modern and gorgeous. Some complaints were I had to wait in the change room for 15 minutes (literally) before someone came for me to begin my treatment. In most spas, water is usually available to clients sometime during treatment, this was not the case for me. Maybe there should be some in the change room so we can serve ourselves. After treatment you can use the sauna and pool that is exclusive to the spa for an hour. I was offered this option but my husband was not. Need some consistency.

To make this an honest review however I do have to add that occasionally guests were asked for their belongings (hats, sandals, sunglasses) at this resort. This did not change our overall feeling towards this resort or the staff. We had a great stay and would 100% recommend this hotel (and we already have) to others.

Room Tip: Rooms on pool side were quieter in the evening. Marina view is lovely however.

We stayed here for a week in June and whilst we liked the hotel and the restaurant staff in particular were excellent the hotel is already showing signs of wear and tear and it is relatively new, The location is great and the beach is lovely with some enthusiastic staff trying to get you involved with the activities.
The a la carte restaurant food seemed pre cooked so in fact the buffet ended up being the best which is surprising since they try to make a big deal about dressing up for the a la carte venues. The concierge/tour desk was dreadful and only wanted to sell specific tours and really should be called the unhelpful desk. Ironically the bell boy helped us the most to get cars etc as he seemed to have a book of contacts!
The reception staff were mixed and really did not have much knowledge of things to do so you definitely need to prepare in advance otherwise you are stuck at the hotel.
We enjoyed our stay overall however this is not Cuba and if you think it is then you are very much mistaken - the beach is beautiful but the whole area masks what Cuba is all about so do not think you come here and you have been to Cuba because you have not.

Room Tip: Make sure you stay in Havana as well so you see the real Cuba

Dear “riocobb” from London (U.K), I would like to thank you for ranking our hotel so highly despite of a few remarks you are mentioning in your constructive comments reported on Trip Advisor.
I was glad to see that you appreciated the location of the hotel which looks like a big boat amazingly located between the Caribbean Sea and the Marina and always overlooking the sea wherever you stand up from.
When you say that Varadero is not Cuba, it is true that this place is the most touristic pole of the island and I will say that Varadero is to Cuba what “Cancun” is to Mexico or what “Punta Cana” is to Santo Domingo. However this is the perfect departure place to organize on a daily basis amazing trips which will allow you to discover the real unexplored and authentic Cuba through several available excursions.
For you information, there is, next to the front desk an excursion desk offering all kind of daily excursions all around the island such as Jeep Safari, Catamaran excursion with a special “swimming with the dolphins” offer, Helicopter tours, guided visit to different historical cities including La Habana and much more… every excursion being done in one day, so people do not have to prepare in advance their excursions.
Again thank you for your comments and we hope to see you soon back in our resort.

Stayed there for a week . Little disappointed over rating . Compared to 4.5 star resorts in varedero memories.
1) staffs not knowledgable . Front check in did not advised they offer 30 minutes water activities free. We found out two days before checked out .

2) they do offer snorekeling for $20 per adult and $10 for under 12 yrs. but when we asked at travel and torus desk they did not tell instead trying to sell their tour package for $ 100 per adults .

3)foods are ok but need more varieties .
4) this is 1 year old resort but the drainage by the lobby is bad . I saw three staffs were fighting to clear the lobby balcony water .
5) beach is not close . Need to walk 10 mintues from main area but to wait for hotel car is more than 10 min .
6)rooms are clean and nice .
7) bar and service staffs are great . Except staffs at the front desk and tour desk.
Needs more greenery at the front of the hotel . Def not a 5 star . It's below 4 star .

Dear “thabo v” from Toronto (Canada), thank you for reporting your comments on Trip Advisor.
I was glad to see that you particularly enjoyed the quality of our food (except the variety but as you know, on the island, we have to deal almost exclusively with local and seasonal products), the quality of your room as well as the cleanliness and the friendliness of our staff in general.
Our beach is exactly 280 meters far from our pool area and whoever doesn’t want to walk these 5 minutes’ walk can always make use of our golf cars shuttle which transport our guests form the pool to the beach area every 5 to 10 minutes. For your information, in more than 50% of the resorts in Varadero, the distance between the beach and the hotel is far much longer.
The drainage you mention in the lobby terrace does not affect but only the outside part on the lobby where nobody can seat when raining. Like in all the tropical islands, rains are short but very intense and there is no drainage able to absorb the quantity of water falling when this happened. This happened in any city in the world including Toronto, New York or Paris when you have sudden heavy rains and the drainage system collapse. After this kind of heavy rains, it takes an average of 5 to 10 minutes for us to dry the entire lobby terrace area which, I think, does not interfere at all with the operation! I do not really understand your point…
I also do not really understand the “30 minutes” water activities free… In fact all the water activities in the resort are free except motorized activities and this is specified in the hotel information brochure you receive upon your arrival with your key at the front desk! Some water activities such as a catamaran excursion are run by an outside company at the cost of $100 per person which includes an 8 hours excursion with snorkeling, swimming with the dolphins, lunch in a private island with grilled lobster and more, all beverages included. This excursion has nothing to do with our hotel and it is sold in our lobby by a company named “Gaviota Tour”. The $20 snorkeling session you are mentioning is also run by an outside company and takes place on our beach. It has nothing to do with the catamaran excursion which takes 8 hours. Nothing wrong with it!
Finally, the hotel opened the door less than one year ago and, even in the tropics, the trees, plants and other greeneries need a certain time to mature…
I feel sorry if we did not reach 100% of your expectations since the points you mentioned are not really related with our hotel operation.
Best regards.

Reviewed July 17, 2014

This was our first time to Cuba, but we have travelled extensively through the Carribean, Europe and Asia (even though my profile only shows one review). Being a Cuban first timer, we lowered our expectations, significantly, based on the reviews from tripadvisor and the general consensus of family, friends and coworkers. This was a last minute vacation for us, a family of 5.

The resort: First appearance is beautiful. Lobby, bar, patio – all beautiful. Felt safe, beautiful location.
The rooms: The first appearance of the rooms is also nice, although it done seem rundown for a hotel only a year old. The beds weren’t bad. Our rooms were cleaned everyday, but I do have a complaint. The chemical they were using to clean smelled so bad. Our room smelled like urine the entire week. (the smell was more prominent right after the room was cleaned). And I know some people may say “you’re not in your room a lot when you’re on vacation” - well we were. We have 3 smalls kids, and during peak UV hours, we were in the rooms because it was simply too hot and unsafe to be outside. The bathroom “complex” in your room was odd. There are frosted glass doors that separate the washroom to your room. There are no doors on the shower (or a curtain for that matter) and there is another frosted glass door in the toilet room. It’s awkward, my husband felt very uncomfortable around our young daughters because there was no privacy. I don’t understand the concept of the whole washroom facility. The door to the toilet room also couldn’t stay closed, so as you are brushing your teeth at the sink, the door slams in your back. I had to prop a flip flop under the door everytime. It’s just not designed properly. Another complaint I have is there is nowhere to hang clothes/bathing suits/towels, to dry (out side on the balcony). In Paris France this wouldn’t be a problem, but this is an absolute must at a resort in the Carribean where 80% of your vacation is based on water activities (beach and pool). Towels were replenished everyday. They were washed, but definitely not clean. Minibar was stocked up. Another complaint here. They provided you with 1 bottle of 1.5L water. This is a problem when I drink 3L of water a day on my own – not to mention 4 other members in my family. We requested more water, it was brought to us once the entire week. When I left a note and a very nice tip to the maids, we received 1 more bottle (I thought th 20$ tip I left would get me more than 1 bottle).

The beach: The beach is BEAUTIFUL. Been all around the world, this beach is maybe the best I have seen. Beautiful warm crystal clear water. Shallow for the kids. It was gorgeous. People keep saying that the beaches in Varadero have white sand. They must have never seen white sand. It looks white in pictures, but it’s not white, that’s forsure. Not raked often enough, many cigarette butts. We spent the mornings at the beach everyday and enjoyed it very much. Drinks were inconsistent, but not a big deal.

The pool: We spent our afternoons here. Very nice, perfect for kids. My kids loved it. But I have another complaint. NO SHADE. Lack of umbrellas. Umbrella’s and shade ARE A MUST. The umbrella’s are stationary, so you can’t move them around. When we had no shade, we had to resort to going to our room.

The food (buffet): I would like to start off by saying we are not picky eaters. At all. There was a variety of food, but nothing was even remotely enjoyable (pastries and cakes definitely were). It’s like they just gave up. Overcooked/undercooked and recycled. I would like to note that I had brought a jar of Nutella, Heinz Ketchup and maple syrup. We went through almost everything for the week. This is no word of lie, we had 11 people come up to us and ask us if they can buy a spoon full of Nutella or a couple of squirts of ketchup. It was the weirdest thing. There are 3 fruits always available – papaya, pineapple and watermelon (all flavorless). Mango was delicious (when available) as well as bananas. It seems like there is everything available but they need to hire a chef who knows what he’s doing to make the food enjoyable. Food is not the be all and end all of a vacation, but when you’re paying 6,000$ for 7 days, and you’re staying at 5 star resort, you should be getting more. The breakfast station was good, but the cooks (bless their souls), were not efficient at all. They do not know how to multitask. The pizza was surprisingly good at the pool restaurant. All in all, you will not starve. But you will not be eating anything close to the food in Mexico, Jamaica, Aruba and Dominican.

Also, as a last note, if you are buying cigars in Cuba, do not buy cigars at the cigar bar. They are cheaper at duty free in the airport.

Sorry for the extensive review, but I feel like I needed to point everything out. This hotel is definitely not a 5*, I would rate it a 3.5*. I hate when people say “well it’s a 5* for Cuban standards”. A 5 star in cuba should be at parallel with a 5 star in Canada, France and Thailand. If it’s not a 5 star, then rate it lower.

I do want to say that the people and staff in Cuba is what made us forget about everything. They are the most kindest, genioune, humble people I have every met in my entire life. I don’t know if I will go back to the Melia Marina, but I’ll definitely go back to Cuba.

Dear “DidiCro” from Canada let me start by thanking you very much for reporting your constructive comments on your experience at the Meliá marina Varadero.
It is always disappointing to see that our customers are qualifying our hotel as an average hotel despite of the efforts we do provide in order to turn their holidays into a good experience.
It was your first time in the island of Cuba and I do understand your disappointment in term of food variety or sometimes quality if your compare us with other destinations in the Caribbean islands. For a reason you do not ignore, we have to deal here with local, seasonal and available products which may be sometimes a challenge.
We are planning to add more shade areas around the pool and we already created lately additional areas with more shade. The same apply to the hangers on the balcony that we already ordered and which should arrive soon.
When you are comparing a 5 star in Cuba with the same category in Europe, Canada or Asia, I can tell you, being French myself and having driven 5 star hotels in Europe, Middle East, Asia or U.S.A, the price’s scale is totally different and a five star hotel price in these countries is ranged between 600 and 1.200 dollars a night with breakfast included only and naturally without the air flight ticket included…
Thanks God, the enormous majority of our customers so far have been reporting excellent comments and left our hotel with very good memories of their stay.
I am again sorry we did not meet the expectations you had and we will continue working hard in order to raise our standards for the good of our clients.
