“wonderfull setting, for a romantic meal”
Reviewed November 3, 2011

visit here, if not staying here, for a special romantic meal,
5* hotel amidst golf grounds, did not stay here, as in hotel nearby,
phone ahead to book a meal, ( as often restaurant fully booked)
also used for many private parties and wedding receptions,
had a wonderfull meal, full al-a-carte. good choice on menu, well cooked food, and hot, yes hot food in cuba, extensive wine menu, with 1st class service, and gentle dinner jazz sounds,
played on the piano and flute, trully a memoriable experience in varadero,
would strongly recommend this restaurant, in a beautifull building, visit the cocktail bar upstairs, and admire the waves lashing up on the rocks.
make sure you book,

This place is like no others. It was the residence of Dupont Nemour before the revolution of 1959, and then has been annexed by the regime of Fidel Castro. Today it is visited as an historic monument and is also one of the best restaurant of the island. The mansion also has 6 rooms to rent.

In this place we had mix feelings during the three days we stayed. At first sight, you are enchanted to discover this beautiful house of billionaire, located at the end of a 18 holes golf surrounding the turquoise sea. But arriving at the front desk, it's like you are teleported in a Kafka novel, speaking to a lady who don't understand english - and apparently not our spanish. She had absolutely no idea how to welcome guests, regareless the prestige of this place. That makes us already regret the warmhearted welcome we had at every private «casa particular» we have stayed in Cuba, and for a fraction of that price. Visiting the rooms, we are conquered by their charm: high ceilings, white marble, genuine antique furnitures, diving view on the sea (which you see from the bed), private balcony. But again we are quickly disenchanted to find dust on the table, a dirty towel in the bathroom and a few other small disapointing details. We are not stickler, but for 166 USD (incl. breakfast + dinner) we are expecting an higher level of attention.

The charms opers again while dining at the sunset, on the terrasse by the sea, of this ancient house. This is surely one of the most privileged and romantic experience in all the Caribbeans. The food is really delicious and we have tasted a variety of dishes you would probably not find anywhere else in Cuba: foie gras poêlé, canard roti (duck), beef carpaccio and of course the lobster (which is saddly forbidden to cubans!). Considering the high prices (about 30 CUC for a main course), the half pension is a good option.

Unfortunately, the breakfast was the poorest we ever had after 2 weeks on the island. At homestays (casas particular), we received much more variety and better products than these miserable tasteless fruits, white breads and unnatural marmelade and juice. Finaly on the last day, they had pity for us and have served us pancakes with honey.

If you just come for a visit, don't forget to go to the 3rd floor, there is an amazing view and a beautiful bar, where they serve the best mojito (about 1000 location claim to have the best mojito, but it was indeed ours).

To conclude, we would anyway recommend to stay at Mansion Xanadu for 1-2 nights, for the unforgettable souvenir of this very special place. If you dare forget the above-mentioned inconvenients...

Room Tip: Rooms have a very ancient charm and some are maybe not used for weeks and can be a little dusty. Che...

This beautiful oasis has only 8 rooms. It is quiet, clean and spacious. The hotel is beautifully decorated with the original furnishings from when the Dupont family owned the home in the early 1900's. Breakfast, Dinner & Golf are included in your stay.
You may have breakfast brought up to your room, on the deck overlooking the ocean or in the dining room. You select from a delicious a la carte menu that includes fruits, muesli eggs pancakes etc. Dinner is also lovely. Though Golf is included you must pay the 25 CUCs per person to rent a Golf Cart and 56 CUC's to rent clubs. There is also a Driving Range.

Though Xanadu is wonderful they do not have a pool, nor do they have a private beach. If you want to swim in the ocean you have to sneak over to the beach owned by the neighboring hotel. It is nice but the security guards will hassle you about using the hammocks & lounge chairs. Another issue with the beach is that the golf club allows Cuban families to park on the property so that they may go swimming & picnic on the grassy knoll above the beach. The ground is covered with broken glass, food, garbage & screaming children.

There is a very nice bar on the roof of the hotel that overlooks the golf corse and they have live music on occasion.

Room Tip: Rooms with the ocean view are breathtaking. they have a lovely balcony and you can hear the ocean at...

Sorry that I have not written before. This hopel was a fantastic experince and we had the best of service both in the restaurant and in the rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpsom and I would like to thank them all for their outstanding hospitality.
The rooms are amazing and the bar at the top fantastic.
We had the best of food and wine in the restaurant together with very good service. Breakfast was served in the patio and was also excellent.
The prices of the room was not expencive compared with the location, service and the comfort.
We are travelling the world both on business and leisure and will absolutely reccomend this place for anyone that would like a tast of the old Caribbean.
The building it self was fantastic and the ceiling in the bar was worth an extra Margarita.

we did not stay in the hotel, but went to the restaurant for my 70th bday treat whilst in Cuba. It was so expensive and the food was probably the worst food I have had in my life - the mansion was beautiful and the view to die for, but we couldnt eat any of the food - we are definitely not a fussy lot but it was tasteless - the soup tasted like the washing up water - the cost was astronomical - dont go there. The waiters were also not a very friendly lot.

Nice if you like the homey atmosphere of a very small hotel or you love golf (the hotel is part of the golf club). Plenty of free parking next to the hotel.

Restaurant was good, we had a lovely dinner there with Chateaubriand (the best beef!) However, we also tried plenty of other good restaurants in Varadero, at cheaper prices.

Room was big and had all the modern conveniences, although the TV always had bad reception. View from the room was awesome, a picture perfect sea view.

The location right on the beach is great, although it is so close that I wouldn't recommend it during a large storm/hurricane. We experienced some strong winds and the windows shutters banged shut and broke. There were many broken tiles and shutters around the hotel. Also, even when there is hardly any wind, the waves are always extremely loud. Not the quiet sounds of water you would imagine, but you feel like you are in a ship in a rough storm.

All in all, I found it a bit too expensive (almost 200 Euro per night) for what we got. Next time I would go for a Varadero resort for the same price.

The stay on this mansion was amazing, considering that this is a piece of very luxurious history, with very amazing architecture. The rooms are very spacious and stylish; and the view from the balcony was formidable, as it gave me a great and close view of the beach. I would recommend making a reservation through this website: http://www.varaderogolfclub.com/en/accomodation.asp because of the great price and also due to the fact that it includes golf at Varadero Golf Club.
