We got the whole "all inclusive" deal without really knowing what that ment :-) and to be able to leave your money in your appartment, weather you are at the pool, on the beach or in the restaurant is just fantastic after one week guarding your wallet, needing to tip everyone... The feeling we got was totally mindblowing!
The food in the buffer restaurant was the best I ate in Cuba, and you could choose between huge portions of cold or warm food, selected wines, a varation of desserts and good breakfast with a nice strong cup of good coffie, witch is hard to find in Cuba.
What I would not recommand is the more exclusive restaurant they have. Live music and good wine can not cover up the industrial quality on the products that they served. And the system of booking the restaurant before you go to eat.... That does not work. We had to wait two days before we even could eat at the restaurant... And there wher not many places to choos between.

Room Tip: The best would be to rooms situated on the north side of the hotel. We where so lucky to get the end...

This all inclusive hotel i.e. unlimited free drinks and food 24 hours a day is impressively run and a ideal chill out for a couple of days but the beach was a disapointment because the section nearest the hotel was being re formatted by a bull dozer. The 10pm international type cabaret is bold, brash and very noisy - a situation that is not helped by poor quality amplification. Totally, totally worth waiting in the small queue that forms when the resturant booking desk opens at 9am every morning opposite the lobby shop to ensure you dine in one of the lovely restaurants i.e. other than the buffet. Remember that when the say a restaurant is fully booked they might simply be talking about the 7pm sitting i.e. there is also a 9pm sitting which is not as widely known/publicised. We found the sea food in the Trinidad excellent but the best ambience/food/service/music is in the Fueteventura Restaurant ( near to the Piano bar)

Beautiful grounds, great location. It was sometimes hard to find a place to eat at off hours, but the food was generally plentiful and of the type of quality I would expect at an all inclusive. The grounds are very well kept and the rooms are clean and well equipped. The water in the hotel seems surprisingly clean and the pool area is nice. The hot tub is a tiny little lukewarm cesspool and the front desk staff wasn't very friendly. The Guantanamo Cafe service was sub par but the waiters and buffet staff always went out of their way to please us. Carlos in the Steakhouse makes amazing napkin flowers and the food in the steakhouse was pretty good. The bed was hard and I think it had a plastic sheet which crinkled so I pretty much got no sleep. The club was dead except Friday night, but I had lots of fun there. Overall, I had a great stay at Melia Varadero.

Just got back from Melia Varadero, This is a nice hotel and in a good location. The golf course is steps away along with a mall for picking up souviners or anything else you may have forgot.

Pros...
Hotel is very clean
Grounds are easy to walk and easy to find everything
Staff is excellent, very obliging
Taxi's are parked steps away
Entertainment in the evening was great
Steak House was amaziing

Cons....
Food - I could always find something to eat. Bread and cheese was very good.
Coffee forget about getting a regular coffee, I drank expresso (when in Rome)
The buffet hours were weird, lunch wasn't served until 1pm so if you missed breakfast its a long wait. (the reason for the 1pm opening for lunch is to give them time to clean up after breakfast and gear up for lunch)
BEER, I could only find Bucaneer at the hotel bars, if you like a light beer you will have to buy your own.

One piece of advice: change your money at the bank, if you do at the hotel, make sure YOU count it in front of the desk worker. I exchanged some and was ripped of 10 dollars. I am glad i counted in front of the lady. I am sure it was a mistake but....

Room Tip: The way this hotel is set up, I doubt there is a bad room in the property.

Just got back from the Melia on the 20th of November. It is a beautiful hotel and the staff are all so nice and will do anything to please you.
I was very disapointed about a few things.
1. I selected the Melia because there was supposed to be a tennis trainer on the site and since my daughter doesn't play I wanted to grab my chance that I can play everyday while on vacation. The trainer was never there even on the days he was supposed to be there and it was written on the sports calendar. I brought my racket for nothing and could just practice my services since I was alone to play.
2. It was my birthday while at the Melia. Everybody told me I would get special attentions for that special event but I got 1 reservation at the Fuertoventura restaurant, that's it. No birthday cake, no chocolates in the room in the morning, nothing.
3. The humidity level in the first room which was 3308 was so bad that the sheets were wet and my medicine got wet and with little bugs in them so I couldn't take my medication starting on the second day. They finally moved us to room 2310 and it was a beautiful renovated room with no humidity problems. Since the hotel was far from full, I have no idea why they didn't give us that room from the start.
The beach is beautiful and we found that the strip of beach on the right of the hotel is nicer than the beach on the left which is the Melia beach. On the right hand side, past the rocky section, the water was beautiful with no rocks and the sand is finer there.
The beach in the front of the hotel is being repaired and there was heavy machinery everyday with its noise and strong smell of gaz.
The a la carte restaurants were very nice and the food was very good except for the soups at the Fuertoventura restaurant which were awful. The food in the buffet was bland and tasteless but I expected that in Cuba. We found things to eat and that's what's important. The paella restaurant on the beach is very nice and the staff very friendly.
I tried the Melia Las Antillas in 2006 and it was a better experience. I will probably not go back to the Melia Varadero.
We still had a wonderfull holiday with wonderfull weather and a chance to practice my spanish and learn some more about the Cubans.

We stayed here to chill out following a week long tour of the island. Varadero outside of the resort hotels is little better than a slum, so its really important that you are pretty much self contained in your resort. At this hotel you will not be disappointed. The accommodation is superb, the staff helpful and attentive, there are lots of activities including sailing and scuba diving if you want them and plenty of places to zonk out if you don't. The variety and availability of food would put a lot of cruise ships to shame. I especially liked the poolside Paella bar at lunchtimes where they cook your Paella to order in a gorgeous setting. I am sure there are similar hotels in this area but at least with this one you cannot be disappointed.

Room Tip: Can be noisy in the hotel at night; lots of parties and shows. Try for a room away from these if you...
