Fantastic, great beach, great and friendly service and entertainment, great inner court yard/garden/pool, good unlimited food and drink, food at a la cart restaurants (better service and entertaining) not as good as buffet restaurant. Buffet restaurant has unlimited lobsters every Monday Wednesday and Friday. In house money exchange, clinic(not necessary staffed throughout the day!), shops (cheap liquor 3.85CUC for a 0.7l bottle of Havana Club!), tour package operators. The negatives: No 110v outlet, unreliable/slow/costly internet(3CUC per 15 minutes, slower than the old dialup and couldnot get thru to Gmail!), becareful with the water (luckily bottle water is plentiful and free), my wife was sick for one day (the Cuban doctors are great! They even make house call, showed up in less than 20 minutes after our call, very effective, my wife was up and normal within a few hours, cost only 115 CUC including 2 needles and 3 types of medicine, will claim it back thru OHIP and Manulife), tennis court and fitness room close at 5PM.

Dear client:

We thank you for having taken time to let us know about your holiday at our resort. Your opinion is very precious to us as it will help us improve our services.

We are very happy to learn that you have enjoyed our resort and that you have had a very good time. We always try to please all of our clients and with this in mind we try to offer the food that clients like the most, we are very pleased to see that it was your case and that you enjoyed our selections.

We have power converters on request; we wished we had known that you needed it so that we could have sent one to your room.

The internet service is offered by a third company, we agree that it is very slow but we keep the service to offer our clients at least a way to log in since it works slowly all over the places.

The gym and the tennis courts have access 24hrs, the instructor works up to 5:00pm but if clients want to make use of both services they can have access with their room keys. We are sorry you did not have the proper information and that because of this you were not able to enjoy these services more.

We thank you again for having taking time to let us know about your experience and hope that we can count on your visit in the near future, it will be a pleasure to have you back as our returning guests.

Best regards,

Jose Carlos Sánchez

Hotel Property: Absolutely beautifully landscaped with lots of trees, flowers and manicured shrubbery. Lobby, restaurants and bar areas are always clean and there is a constant presence of staff working hard to keep it that way. Lots of little nooks to sit and relax when you are not soaking up rays at the beach or pool. Nice water feature filled with minows and other fish that are cool to watch from paths or bridges.
Rooms: We did request a room change, because although the first room was clean, there was a mold smell (probably due to the high humidity, the temperature was high 30's to low 40's when we arrived and it is the rainy season). The room was near the pool and beach in one of the smaller buildings near the far end of the resort. When we requested another room, there was no problem with the front desk and the hotel representative Hector went out of his way to ensure that we were happy offering us several options. Our second room was very comfortable. Since we had to pass the reception to get to our room, we frequently saw Hector after that and he was always genuinely friendly and smiling and asking if everything was okay.
Food: There was a wide assortment of food with something for everyone's taste. We only discovered the nightly BBQ located outside the main buffet (on the terrace) with unlimited beef, lobster, pork, chicken on our second last night and probably would have spent more time there. If you go make sure you look for the waiter Yudelkis, he is absolutely charming and we appreciated his attention and hard work. Inside the Main Buffet the staff worked extemely hard to keep tables cleared, food topped up, and diners happy. Special thanks to Julio and Adeara who became our immediate "friends" topping up our glasses and sharing smiles and conversation. My husband did have some problems with his plumbing but I did not and we both continued to enjoy the food thoughout the week.
Entertainment: The evening shows were good and we enjoyed the variety of dance, music and comedy. In the evening there is a piano player in the main building who is very good. And of course there is the "fun" team who keep you exercising and dancing if you are so inclined.
Trips - We chose the Catamarant trip and for a resonable cost (75) we spent the day on the water, spent time with the Dolphins, snokling, and lunch on an Island. Well worth the money.
We also took the double decker into Varadaro. For 5 pesos you can ride it all day getting off and on as often as you like. There is a stop just up the road from the Hotel. It was a great way to see Varadero and great for shopping at the flea markets and shops in Varadero.
The Beach: Never a lack of lounge chairs in the sun or shade and the beach was absolutely gorgeous. There are no words that describe how beautiful it is!
The only gripe we had was with those guests who threw their empty glasses and garbage all over the place, and those few who became overly obnoxious at the pool and bar. I give the staff a lot of credit for keeping their cool with them.
Koodoos to the hard working staff (who worked non stop in the exhausting heat) They played a big part in making our vacation a great memory.

We could not have wished for better - this adult only, all inclusive hotel was excellent - it was a quiet peaceful hotel despite its size with a beautiful pool surrounded by palm trees. A short walk brought you to a white sand beach and azure blue sea. Our rooms were large with a huge comfortable bed and were cleaned daily by the lovely cleaners and their flowers and towels made into wonderful shapes on the bed every day. My wife and I and my step daughter and her fiance enjoyed fillet steak, langoustines, and good Spanish Cava most days. The alla-carte restaurants (3) and the buffet provided enough choice for us for 15 days - not bad for a package holiday. The free booze was readily available and not cheap shots but regular wine, spirits and beer along with coffee and non alcoholic drinks.
We had entertainment every day from stretching on the beach to well presented evening entertainment ( a different act for 15 nights) and a disco for those who wanted it. The staff were all very friendly and helpful - one hiccup with reception one day not being helpful but that was very unusual. All in all a great holiday.

Second visit to Cuba in ten years,Havana is still worth a visit but still requires alot of tender loving care,it has been neglected for far too long. Varadero is a good beach resort, our hotel x Sandals Melia Las Antillas was a descent 4**** hotel, there was always lobster, king prawns, fresh tuna along with an array of other fresh fish cooked as you please. We eat more meat and had everything you could wish for at the bbq, from liver to fillet steaks. The Italian a la carte restaurant was of a very high standard, the fusion and fish restaurant were good but not good as the Italian in our opion.Drinks were of a good standard and plentiful service at reception bar sometimes slow can not understand as to why they keep moving the staff to different stations.Waiter service was of a good standard in all eaterys.Beach is second to none, animation team work hard (hello to Teri),evening shows are all live which is commendable.Do go out and about and enjoy the local atmosphere,in the outside bars etc you will be asked to pay a peso 70p to use the loo which should not be insisted upon, but maybe a small tip offererd for the toilet. My wife and I had a great two weeks and would stay at this hotel again, very clean and great value for money,Cava included in the drinks package,a good one at that.Geoff and Julie Mancicius,Cannock,Staffs,England.

First of all, I read a million reviews of this hotel and many others when I was trying to decide where we would be staying for our week vacation from May 16th-20th. I found it incredible that everybody had such different opinions, and find it even more incredible now that I have gone myself.

The bottom line is I would go back to this hotel any time. We had an absolutely fantastic time, despite the supposedly horrid weather.

Room: We had a Junior Suite in one of the side villas (6217) It was facing a garden in the front, which was beautiful. It was very quiet and in great shape. I think people have a hard time understanding that in a place with a relative humidity above 50% all year, and most of the time above 70%, things degrade quite quickly. That being said, our room was spacious, clean, and in great condition. We had tonnes of hot water, and the air conditioner and safe worked perfectly. (I would recommend asking for the safe key when you check in, as they won't give it to you automatically for some reason). The minifridge was stocked daily (We were disappointed that "alcohol" meant 2 cans of beer a day along with 3 cans of soft drinks). You have to leave the key in the slot near the front door for the air conditioner and lights to work. I thought this was perfectly reasonable and it took less than 20 minutes for the air conditioner to thoroughly cool the room. We always had 2 rolls of toilet paper, replaced once a day if used.

Grounds: Absolutely spectacular. From the hammocks to the random gazebos to sit in, it is so large and well done that if we wanted to be alone, we could always find somewhere. They have a huge chess and checker set which was fun. The pool is nice, but nothing special, deepest at 1.4m. There seemed to be chairs even at peak times, although some people leave towels on a chair in the morning to "save it", and take off, which is annoying. There is no wet bar, but the pool bar is right beside the pool and is well staffed at all times and open late. The flowers and trees are impressive, and the gardeners work really really hard. The resort is adult only (16 and over), so it was pretty quiet.

Beach: Beautiful and clean. There were always a lot of chairs, although for a few peak hours you might have to look a little, and you might not get full shade. I found that lasted at most 2 hours in the morning.

Service: The best I have ever encountered, regardless of tip. We gave either a peso or a small gift as a tip, but only because we wanted to, not because we felt obliged. Of course, there were a few of the staff (reception, and 1 or 2 others) that were not up to the amazing standards as some of the rest of them, but good just the same. I would say the worst was the reception, but they still answered your questions. Everyone appreciated if you tried to speak a little spanish, and if you were polite and smiled. We brought some disposable razors, tampons, dollar store fragrant soaps and stuff like that. I think they preferred the gifts over the pesos, but they seemed gracious either way. They will pretty much get you whatever you want within reason if you are nice to them and we left stunned by their service.

Food: I went to Cuba with the expectation of bad food. Everyone always says the food is horrible in Cuba, but we found ourselves at times saying they must be the pickiest people we'd ever heard of, or downright crazy. Even if you don't like 90% of the things they had on offer, there was SOOOO much! I am a cheese lover and they have amazing cheeses, and a very large variety of them. Fresh bread every single day, a barbecue for lunch and dinner with a huge assortments of meats, a seafood grill with a bunch of different kinds of fish, fresh pizza every day… The buffet was changed a bit daily, and everything seemed to be labelled correctly. Great orange juice (which they had a hard time keeping up with demand, but would try to replace if it started getting low), ketchup mustard, I was extremely happy. Look out for hotdogs at the beach bar, they are pretty good, if not always there. I was disappointed when the 24 hour snacks turned out to be a few plates of sandwiches at the lobby bar, but they are fresh and replenished frequently, and each drink makes them taste better. Something to keep in mind is that vegetarians beware… there are not very many meat-free dishes. Also, if you cannot eat pork, it can be tough. I heard that food is generally undercooked, but I experienced the opposite, mostly with the chicken, which was sometimes overdone.

A la cartes: There are 3, which is less than a lot of other resorts, especially 4.5 stars. We liked the Italian the best, followed by the seafood, then the gourmet. All 3 had excellent food, even better service, and live music that fit the mood. The performers have real talent. To make a reservation you have to dial 7181 on the phone in your room, which is better than most places, where you have to find someone to make reservations.

Alcohol: When we went out on some excursions we mixed up with people from other resorts and even the 5 stars didn't seem to have the selection we did. They never ran out of anything, and had multiple kinds of every drink. I was pleasantly surprised by sambuca and johnny walker. They are unreserved and serve drinks quite fast (depending on bartender). The lobby bar serves all drinks in glasses, which is nice, and is 24 hour. It also has the largest assortment of drinks, and on most nights has live piano and a singer (the one we listen to was really good). It also has a huge patio right beside it that allows you to get a great breeze and take in the resort from the upper floor.

Internet and phone: Forget about it. 15$ for 30min for the internet, and you pretty much have access to facebook and gmail. It takes forever for it to load. Phone is very very expensive, even local calls.

Entertainment: They had a show every night by the pool at around 21h-21h30, not sure. The stage is set up really nicely, and a lot of people came to see it, but we didn't stay to watch. On saturdays they have a small party on the beach with a small bar (pretty much rum and cokes) they set up. There were quite a few people for that, but we didn't really find it that fun. They have a disco bar, open from 23h-2h, with strobe lights and a "clubby" atmosphere, but it is pretty small and it had 8 people, including us, the one time we went in. Pretty much everyone seems to take off at night to party in Varedero.

Excursions: We went on 2, the catamaran to cayo blanco, and the colonial day tour to Havana.

There are 2 choices for the catamaran, and we took the one where you don't swim with the dolphins. You spend a lot of time on the boat, but the crew were fun and entertaining and they had an open bar the entire time (a few different kinds of rum and pop) and you spend 2 hours on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen (I've been to mexico twice, and the bahamas). You have an open bar with a a very limited selection of drinks at the beach (including lobster). For 10 pesos, you can have a tail of a grilled lobster on the boat before you get to the beach. It is quite a bit of food, and I think the price was fine, but the lobster was overdone, and I was given the impression that they would cook it fresh on the boat, which they didn't, so I wouldn't get it if I knew that. All in all, worth every penny!

Havana colonial tour day excursion: There are 5 choices for havana tours, and we chose a simple day excursion. It is 2 hours there and back. It rained the entire day, so that probably added to our dislike of the tour, but a few other things didn't help. The bathroom and air conditioning on the bus didn't work very well, and we had to hold the door open to the bathroom door and "guard" it whenever someone needed to go, as the light wouldn't work, and neither would the flush or sink. The tour guide repeated herself over and over and honestly wasn't interesting, although nice enough. You go to a restaurant in the old town of havana, and the food and entertainment is good, but you could have similar at your resort. They bring you to a "rum factory", which consists of 10 minutes looking at a few wood barrels, and the rest of the time spent in the shop, where you can buy cigars and rum and coffee (they do give you free samples of the rum, some of which are pretty good. Also, you can pick up a 700ml bottle of okay rum for around 3.80). The worst part is that people decided to bring their children on an 8-hour bus tour…. 4 hours of which was pure traveling, in the heat…. The children were grumpy and bored, and they really shouldn't have been there. There were a few families that just decided to ignore their children as they ran around the bus and bothered other people. I wish we had stayed at the resort that day or done another havana excursion. You can also rent a car for approximately 150$, which includes gas and insurance, and was about how much we paid for the excursion, so I would have done that if I would have known. Havana is beautiful, and despite the annoyances of the day I am glad I was able to see it. Maybe other people would like the tours.

Things I would think about: I read in other reviews that there is a sulphur smell, and they are not making it up. It can be strong at some times and in certain parts of the resort. Because it was windy for a lot of the time we were there, I am sure that we didn't even get the worst of it. It wouldn't stop me from going back (and, honestly, I smelled the same sulphur smell other places in Cuba due to the humidity, if less intense), but it is something to think about if you really think that it would bother you. Something to note is we did not smell anything in our hotel room or the hotel in general. Also, there was no smell on the beach, nor in the restaurants, and I don't even think the pool. It is just certain spots when you walk around the river flowing through the resort. They could really raise the water level of the river.

Another thing is that this is a mid-higher level of hotel, and even though we found the price reasonable (and we are not that well off) there were a lot more older people than the other resorts I saw. Although it got younger as the week went on (by the end of our trip almost half our hotel was under 35), we are in our 20's and were the minority. If you are looking to party at your resort, I doubt it will happen here. This resort is more for relaxation, and if you want to party you can go to Varadero (they have somewhere that is rocking every night, but you will have to buy your drinks). If you want to find people in their 20's and early 30's reliably, the cheaper resorts are probably the best.

Last, is a small annoyance that is one thing I would bother to point out: The pool is only open from 7h-19h… Why, Melia, why? The beach is pretty dark, and people tend not to swim at night, so it would be great if the pool was open until at least 24h. Especially since the pool bar is right there. Please change this!

This hotel was advertised to us as a 4.5 stars ... As soon as I saw the room (which was a suite) I couldn't believe it. It was really average, absolutely nothing came even close to the idea I had of a 4.5 stars hotel. The bathroom was dirty and everything in the room was cheap, old and tired.

The site looks great with a nice big pool but there was that awful smell on all of the east side of the site ... a reeking odor of septic tank, it was so bad we had to go around the long way every time we got to our room to avoid it. People couldn't lay on the east side of the pool because the smell was intolerable.

The staff is not helpful at all, they all looked like they didn't care about their customers, especially the ones at the front desk which were the worst I've ever seen.

And be ready to wait in line for everything ... if you want a drink at the lobby bar, food at the grill or eggs cooked at breakfast ... the staff is in no hurry what so ever, they don't care if there's ten people waiting in line, they will keep going at the slowest of speed imaginable.

The food at the buffet generally good, there's alot of choice. The "à la carte" restaurants (3) where pretty good... but you have to call the same day to make a reservation for diner ... and don't wait after 1pm to call because you'll end up waiting for the line for a very long time (I got caught the first day and it took me 45 minutes to finally get the line). Make your reservation as soon as you wake up in the morning ! It's the only way to reserve, as absurd as it may sound.

Oh and if you want a hut at the beach or the pool, well you better get up early because otherwise you won't get any. It's another of those places where you gotta get there first, put your towels on the chairs to reserve them and then go do something else.

The beach is beautiful though, no question about that.
